Summary: Great guide!
Review: I just purchased this book after checking out 10 different London guide books at the library. This was by far my favorite! I have never been to London before and this has been the most helpful book I have used in planning my trip. It provides the very basic information, such as what line is the correct line at customs and currency information. Additionaly, it has tons of info, such as the exact cost of an attraction, restaurant, or hotel (no vague words or symbols), nearest tube stop, what time of day to go to the site to avoid crowds, lots of insider tips (ie. to avoid lengthy security checks, leave your bags homes when visiting Houses of Parliament), and approx time you should allow to see the site (I couldn't find this info in any other book and I was specifically looking for this tidbit). It also has ratings of appeal for each age group in addition to the authors own personal rating. For example, for Site X, it might give it 2 stars for preschooler, 2 stars for grade school, 3 stars for teens, 3 stars for young adults, 4 stars for adults over 30, and 4 stars for seniors. This is perfect for family planning. There are two minor reasons I did not give this book 5 stars: the author uses its own "zone" system (zones 1-12) to group together attractions, hotels, etc. This might work perfect for other cities and is a good idea, but since London has its own official Zone system for public transportation, this can be confusing for London firsttimers like myself who are still trying to figure out London's transportation system...you have to constantly remember when the author says zone 2, he doesn't mean London's official Zone 2. I wish the author had chosen a different word than "zone" for his own groupings. Also, I could not find any info about the changing of the guards nor about the Horse Guards (perhaps I just missed it?). No tourist guide book can be considered complete without this information. Nonetheless, this is my favorite guide book thus far and will definetly be with me on my trip to London in a few weeks.

Review: London turned out to be one of those places that I really enjoyed....and I believe it was made more enjoyable because we had done some research and planning before going. The Unofficial Guide provided information other than the mainstream stuff you read in all the other books. It added interested pieces of information that made even the planning process a pleasant one.

Review: Not quite up to the standards set by Unofficial Guides to Disney World. This reads more like a regular travel book with a bit more honest criticism than other books in the Unofficial series. The sections on museums and attractions for children are useful, but I felt that this book could have been a lot more critical and less descriptive.

Review: Page 67 of the book tells you to buy a voltage converter and that the input to the converter should be 110 and output is 220.'WRONG. The input voltage INTO the converter from the plug is 220 volts, OUTPUT, into the US device, is 110 volts. Be CAREFUL with that recommendation. Otherwise, a fairly typical unoffical guide - these City guides are useless for restaurants and hotels, there are so many dozens of nice local restaurants and hotels in every city in the world [except NYC which has maybe 20 decent hotels] thast I find you can save ALOT of money and get a nicer place just looking around a little. As for prices, BE CAREFUL to check prices for things in the USA. PAY in POUNDS and use a credit card- example is the Heathrow-London train - EurRail Same thing applies to London tube, ... Also, use your credit card to get cash in London, even with charges for cash advances and interest for a month, you'll save on getting ripped off at airport currency bootths or banks, esp. in the USA.

Review: Simple, informative and ingratiating, reading this book was like having a wise and witty friend guide us through one of the world's great cities. The brief history section alone is worth the price. Probably the best travel book we've ever bought.

Review: The Unofficial Guides are a great travel guide series and their Guide to London is the series at its best. The writer has really captured the flavor of London and has the unique perspective of being an American who lives in London and knows it well but who also knows what it's like to be a visitor. Includes some great out-of-the-way recommendations and is particularly strong on museums and on traveling with children. I recommend it highly, we never went anywhere without it!

Summary: A literate travel guide!
Review: This book is worth the price of admission just for the History of London section. Wittily scribed, with a great - and fun - sense of place. Logan's style is breezy, economical, yet thorough. Three Cheerios for this London Guide written by a Yank!
