Summary: A book to end dieting forever
Review: This is a wonderful guide to good eating habits! By using the information available in this book, and by writing down everything I eat, I have lost a sensible 32 pounds in 9 months without feeling hungry or doing without foods I really enjoy. This helps you plan your meals with foods you like , "budgeting" calories so that you don't exceed your limit each day. I have found in addition to wieght loss, because of the process of budgeting calories, I tend to eat more healthful, low calorie foods, so I'm getting a more balanced diet. This has what's missing in other calorie counters; baking ingredients so you can calculate calories per serving of your own favorite recipes, and a guide to many popular restaurant foods.

A great tool for self improvement!

Summary: Wonderfull
Review: This is an EXCELLENT book for diabetics! It is hard to find hidden carbs in foods. Fast foods, store purchased foods or food I grow outside. With this book, the diabetic can avoid low blood sugar or high blood sugars. You might be suprised of all the high carb foods we eat every day. Also pay attention to the portion sizes, the food manufactures try to confuse us.

Summary: The Doctor's Pocket Calorie Fat & Carbohydrate Counter
Review: This is one of the most comprehensive calorie counters I have ever used. It is truly a great guide. For anyone who is interested in losing weight or the true caloric value of food eaten, this is the reference book for you.

Summary: Finally, the a book that does most of what I need.
Review: This was the fifth carb counting book I had purchased. All of the others had one of two flaws:

- they were too big to carry with me, and/or
- they didn't have many of the foods I eat

This book was different. It's small enough to stick in my back pocket when I head out to eat and I can find most of the foods I'm eating to determine how much insulin I need.

There are some foods, particularly restaurants (Chili's, Schlotsky's), that I wish were included, but aren't. But there's usually enough similar information to make an educated guess.

I highly recommend this book.

Summary: 12 Calories for a Teaspoon of Nutmeg!
Review: What a gem "The Doctors Pocket Calorie, Fat & Carbohydrate Counter" is!

This purse-sized book puts honesty into eating.

Essentially, it is a group of lists. You'll see the product name, and in three columns to the right of it, how many calories, fat and carbohydrates. The strength resides in its thoroughness. It seem as if the editors came in my neighborhood grocery store and took notes, cataloguing these stats from every item. There is even a calorie count for spices (a teaspoon of nutmeg has 12 calories!), as well as alcohol (you'll find your favorites brands, plus a general list).

There is a section on restaurants in general. Presuming, for example, red beans and rice is pretty much the same anywhere, we learn we'll be eating about 280 calories.

Disheartening is the restaurant chain section, from Applebee's to Zantiago. I was pleased to see how Boston Market did, but I see the stuffing and gravy on their turkey meal I love costs me an additional 430 calories.

There are some nutritional sections, explaining the fundamentals of a good diet, what fiber is all about and some discussion of sodium.

It is all very handy, and so I fully recommend "The Doctors Pocket Calorie, Fat & Carbohydrate Counter."

Summary: Good But Missing a Few Things
Review: What's there is great! What is missing is too important. This guide has a vast variety of foods listed, and covers some bases other books do not. What is missing is too important - there are no listings for Cholesterol or Good and Bad Fats. It is too important to the diabetic dieter or to any dieter to know these things! I found the book informative - and generally useless beyond basic information found in other books.

Summary: This book is invaluable!
Review: Whether you are on a "diet" or just trying to plan healthy meals for yourself or your family this book will help you do the trick. I carry it with me always (the size is very convenient for purse or car glove box). Along with the lengthy section of regular food counts, it also has sections for sodium counts, protein & iron, and a sizable section for restaurants. As if you couldn't tell already---I high recommend this book! :)
