Summary: Excellent calorie guide- Convienent size
Review: I just started a strict diet, which includes counting my calories. This is the best size to "carry around" with you for a quick refrence anywhere! The pages are color coded and there is an index in the back to make looking up easy. This book is allowing me (and my husband) to make better food choices - although he's not as strict as I am. I know "dieting" isn't fun, but for me it's a necessity- and I also realize a diet will eventually become a "lifestyle" once I reach my goal weight.

I have Hashimot's Hypothyroidism and I'm going to reccomend this book to anyone else I know who also has a thyroid problem. Due to the nature of my condition, I can gain weight very easily - I'm hopful that this tool might make that less of a "threat". I'll also be reccomending this book to my doctors - I'm also keeping a food & excercise diary - which I believe is extremely helpful for those of us who must carefully watch our food intake. BTW, this is reccomended in this book too!

I know from past experience- weight loss isn't an easy task - I'm hopeful that this will help me. I've had this book for only a week and have been on my strict diet for only 3 days. Good Luck to anyone else who wants to use weight and utilize this book!

Summary: Great little resource, big on info
Review: I love this book. I just recently decided to switch diets because the last one I was on was too difficult with my schedule, and I decided to try to create one for myself. So I purchased this book, and so far so good! I'm able to choose foods that I eat anyway, and I've been making up detailed food plans for every day. It's great!

I've found nearly everything in there that I could want, and I love the restaurant guide. Recommended to anyone who wants to lose weight on their own terms.

Summary: Perfect!
Review: I love this little book. Since, I keep a food diary and count every calorie, this informational book is perfect. I carry it with me at all times. It helps me keep track of my calorie intake since I don't want to go over my 1050 calorie limit. It even lists 80 of the common fast food restaurants. If you want to lose weight on your own terms... buy this handy little book.

Summary: Superb Book
Review: I own several "Calorie Counter"-type books. This one is by far the best. I use it just about every day. It has a lot of information, and multiple access points to that information (i.e., by Table-of-Contents or by means of a useful index). Additionally, Borushek is a nutrionist and includes meaningful and very useful information on fats, carbs, diabetes, high blood pressure, and more in appendix-like sections of the book. There is also a very up-to-date section on restaurant-specific fast food. I also use the more generic Ethnic Foods section to track down more esoteric-type resaurant foods. A big thumbs up for this one.

Summary: For Fast-Food Junkies, Not The Health-Conscious
Review: I suppose one could argue that there is such a thing as a health-minded fast-food junkie, but it's hard for me to picture that. That person would probably waste his daily calories on Big Macs and fries, go home, starve, and then return to McDonald's the next day. For most of us, however, a healthy lifestyle doesn't include any real measure of fast food intake, there just aren't enough calories allowed in a given day (2,000 on average) to squander on Wendy's and KFC and Burger King.

Having said that, I do not consider this book to be a useful basic calorie counter. Of its 286 pages, far, far too many entries are devoted to processed and fast foods, while a meager 2 1/2 pages are given to Fresh Fruits and 4 pages are given to Fresh "Canned or Frozen" vegetables. Don't the editors of this guide ever go to the fresh produce section, or does everything they eat come from a can or a drive-up window? I'd much rather have a comprehensive list of fish -- where the RAW but not COOKED caloric values are given (what use is that?) and where popular fish like Sea Bass aren't even listed -- than know that a Mushroom Melt at Rax is 600 calories or that a a Half O' Pound Burger at Shoney's is 1350 calories. We don't even HAVE those chains where I live. If we did, I wouldn't eat there anyway.

This book assumes its readers have no common sense and can't figure out -- on the average -- how many calories are in an order of fries or a chili cheese dog. It would have been far better just to include some representative samplings of fast foods and leave it at that, with more details about basic things like chicken breasts, fishes, cuts of meat, and so forth.

God, do these people really eat everything out of a can?

Unlike other readers, I found the cartoons and ads interspersed throughout this book to be tacky, reminiscent of a supermarket tabloid.

I, too, have been counting calories a long time, but that doesn't eliminate the need for a good, overall reference. This isn't that book. I will keep this little guide, it does manage to take all possible ambiguity out of the caloric damage done by eating at fast food joints. But I'll also be looking for a more 2 feet-on-the-ground, rudimentary calorie guide to use when I can't figure things out myself or when I simply don't know a food value.

Summary: Tons of info in a fun package
Review: I was surprised to see so much included beyond the usual listings for foods (calories, etc.). All the advice on diet, exercise, health, plus cartoons makes it a lot more than I expected. This edition's fast food guide includes Schlotzky's items, which other guides do not list. Suggestions for future editions: include protein grams for all items, not just the fast food listings; and list more items from each restaurant. Some restaurants only list a couple of foods (apparently their diet or "healthy" features). All in all, this book is well worth the price.

Summary: What a fabulous book
Review: I would like to take this opportunity to tell everyone how helpful this book is.I am never without it and it is known as my bible. Ther are so many ways to cut back without being on a strict diet.Just knowing what calories and fat are in food can help change eating habits.

Summary: Wow! What a source of info!
Review: I've had to switch to a low-fat diet, and part of that entails counting calories and fat grams. What fun! I remember the old-style paperback books that list figures in tiny little print, and didn't include any of the items one might encounter while eating out. What a chore!

Well, this little pocket-sized book has made quite a difference in my attitude about keeping track of nutritional information! This is a very small book, but the pages are well-planned and deliver a LOT of information in a very understandable way. The first section of the book gives a much-needed refresher on basic nutritional guidelines, healthy eating, and strategies for eating out (what to look for, what to avoid). Then the guide continues with the "traditional" format of listing foods by type (meat/poultry, vegetables, soups, etc.), including brand names and regional brands. Data of each type (calories, fat, etc.) is laid out in columns, but is also keyed in color to help you remember what number goes with what heading.

The section on chain restaurants is perhaps the best and most comprehensive listing I've ever seen in print. Even though the amazon title states 80 fast-food chains are included, the current version actually lists 101 chains, including all the big national chains and many regional or smaller ones. Menu items' nutritional content is broken down more completely in this section (e.g., fat is also shown as % calories from fat and saturated fat content) -- this is extremely helpful in making smart choices while out and about. There is also a web site associated with the book, that contains additional nutritional information as well as updates to the material in the book.

I love this book so much I have two for myself (one for home, one for the car) and bought one for my mother! I highly recommend this as a very useful tool for anyone who wants to get a handle on their eating habits and start making more informed dietary choices.

Summary: Great for Diabetics!
Review: It is absolutely fantastic!

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in June of 2000. In order to properly guage my insulin intake, I must count my carbs at every meal. I was given a couple of books in the hospital, but I purchased this one and carry it with me everywhere I go. It is absolutely fantastic! It is the most comprehensive source of carbohydrate information that I have found. Not only does it contain specific restaurant information, it contains information on various types of cuisine (i.e. Mexican, Thai, etc.).

I'd highly recommend this book to other diabetics on a carbohydrate counting diet.
