Rating: Summary: An award-winning call to savor and save wilderness . . . Review: A wilderness is supposed to be a place where Nature, not man, influences the landscape and biotic order. But litter lurks even in the wilds, reminding us that legislation and decrees alone cannot protect pristine areas. It takes individual commitment. With more than 120 color photos and text based on a combined 70 or more years of exploring Arizona, David Muench and Lawrence W. Cheek explain why we need wild places where we will not see houses, cars, fences, signs, bullet casings, or even trails - no trace of human interference. They hope that portraying Nature's wondrous legacy will gently focus attention on the fact that we are losing it and the need to protect it for future generations. In the book's forward, former Interior Secretary Stewart L. Udall writes: "The photographs in this book range from expansive scenic vistas, to intimate shots of desert environments, to the textures of slick rock in hidden slot canyons, and to images framed by the "sky island! ! s" of the Sonoran Desert. Published by Arizona Highways, this hardcover won two 1998 Benjamin Franklin awards, one for being the best nature book and the other for being the best designed book using three or more colors. The awards were presented by Publishers Marketing Association, the nation's largest non-profit trade group representing independent publishers of books, audio, video and CDs. Named in honor of America's most cherished publisher and printer, the Benjamin Franklin award recognizes excellence in independent publishing. The North American Nature Photography Association honored Muench in 1997 with its Lifetime Achievement Award.

Rating: Summary: Beautiful photos, wide variey of landscapes Review: This is a wonderful coffee table book packed with a wide variety of spectacular photos of Arizona. It is a stunning display of the tremendous variety found in Arizona's natural habitat. Muench focuses on different aspects of the landscape including light, form, life and ecology. Captions tell where the photograph was taken with some brief commentary. A short essay by the photographer leads off each section with some of his personal thoughts and insights. You will find an awesome view looking up through the trees to the sky, and the beautiful azure color of the Colorado River contrasting against white and rust colored rocks. Views of waterfalls, snow-capped mountains, autumn leaves and desert sands will take your breath away. Natural rock formations and cactus plants are seen in a new light as they become elegant sculptures. Endless, brilliant blue skies are captured against fields, mountains and red rock formations. Close-up of photos vibrant pink cactus flowers and sunny yellow poppies will brighten your day. You also get an occasional glimpse of lush green trees and plants. As with all of Muench's books this one is printed on quality glossy paper with the highest of production values doing justice to the photography. As a Muench fan this is a treasured addition to my library.
