Summary: This book captures what is right in America
Review: This is a moving story and exceptionally well written. I have moved it onto my list of 100 best books right up there with Killer Angels and Annals of the Former World.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Truly a tremendous story!!
Review: Rocket Boys is truly a tremendous book. It's not the type of book I typically look for to read, but now that I have I found it to be one of the best books I've ever read! This book has humor, adventure, action, drama, and emotion - there were times I even laughed out loud. Homer H. Hickam Jr. gets two thumbs for his story telling and writing ability. He clearly knows how to paint pictures with words. Excellent! Excellent! Excellent!

Summary: This is a good book, but does have language
Review: Rocket Boys is a good book if you count out the language. It is better than the movie in the form that the movie cut out parts. Still the movie and book are two good things to watch or see.

Summary: WOW!
Review: I read this book for my English class as my Non- Fiction book. I picked it because my dad had read it and told me it was very good. After reading it, I realize how much of an understatement that is. This book is indescribably great! It is comparable in quality to all of the other books I read in English class such as Huckelberry Finn and Beloved. This is a must read for anyone from rocket builders to coal miners.

Summary: A captivating, delicious read!
Review: The movie was superb, the book was even better. I remained captivated throughout the story, finishing the entire book while in the air from Los Angeles to Raleigh-Durham. My only complaint is that no pictures of the people involved from the time period described were included.

Summary: Simply phenomonal !
Review: This book is outstanding. Rarely have I felt so absorbed by a story of humor, warmth, family and perseverance like this. It makes one realize that there is hope for the future. I hope others will follow this fine example in striving to achieve success against all odds. I've been smiling ever since I finished this inspiring tale. I think others will too. Don't worry if you're not interested in science, this is only the backdrop for a truly great story of hope and coming of age.

Summary: Wow, I knew there had to be more to this wonderful story
Review: It all started when I went to see the movie, "October Sky". I knew the basis of the movie and knew that it was a true story. Being a huge fan of all things NASA and space related it was inevitable that I would see the movie. But although the movie was excellent, I knew there had to be more there. So, I went and got the book. WEll, I was not disappointed, I was in fact overwhelmed by how much more was in the book and how muchthe book and movie were different. Embarrassingly, as I read the book on the bus the other day, I burst into laughter at one of the launch stories. But this book isn't just about rocketry and the quest for space it is a wonderful story of dreams, family, and an eye opening look at the life of coal miners. I say see the movie than read the book, or just read the book, it is just amazing.

Summary: I also was a boy in Coalwood a few years earlier than Homer
Review: I lived in Caolwood W.Va from 1936 to 1940, (Age 6-10). I also knew a few of the adults he discusses (Dick Van Dyke, Bob Likens, Dr. Hale) I found his descriptions both of the people and the place accurate.

It was a joy to me to re-live that period of my life.

My mother like Mrs. Hickman longed for other places, but for me it was the most enjoyable period of my youth.

I thank Horace Hickman Jr. For helping me regain those memories some of which had been lost.

Summary: A touching tribute to West Virginia upbringing
Review: The order is on its way for classroom copies of October Sky for my Honors English 10 students for the fall. A West Virginian from the coal mining area nearby, I basked in the joy of both the book as well as the movie. Teens today are so in need of this kind of story...no blatant violence, no ugly words, and no deviation from respect of one's parents. Trying to become his own person, Hickam sent a message that one can respect parents, honor them, and still become a responsible adult. I had the pleasure of hearing Mr. Hickam recently, and he is everything that his book portrays him to be and is a wonderful role model for struggling, impoverished West Virginians. Financial constraints do not mean the end of dreams!!!
