Summary: CHOO CHOO TRAVEL ADVENTURES!
Review: Add another dimension to your travel adventures. Tried by air, by sea, by car, by motorcycle, by RV? How about by train? In this train travel guide Jim Loomis certainly makes the North American scenic route appealing. Panoramic views of the passing scenery, onboard activities, food, security for your belongings, sleeping accommodations, how to plan your trip, who to call, what to pack for yourself and the kids, how to read a timetable, when things go wrong who to turn to for emergency help, how it all works behind the Amtrak cross country system. California, Mexico, Quebec, Louisiana, New York, Ontario, Washington, Oregon are only a few of the destinations mentioned in this book which taps the innate wanderer in you, and calls you to a different kind of travel adventure. Mr Loomis has even included some suggested itineraries, with related tours and hotels and would you believe railway museums? Take lots of photographs and create your own travelogue for the folks back home. A welcome addition to the vacation experience. Very informative. One can almost hear that distinct plaintive train whistle and that familiar call. All ABOARD!

Summary: Extremely readable & lots of different interesting info
Review: Great book for the rail fan or wannabee rail fan! My favorite escape is planning train trips (even if they don't usually pan out) and I have read every book I have found. Jim's books are extremely readable and have lots of intersting information that I didn't know! It makes you long for the whistles and sway of the train. I did just go on the Copper Canyon and used Jim's comments on that trip; however there were barely 17 pages, which were not enough. If you haven't been - GO. I had a great trip and will give any interested parties all my secrets if you care to drop me an e-mail. But be sure to buy and read Jim's book before you go!

Summary: Wonderful Information, and great foundation.
Review: Having become a rail fan by virtue of my son meeting Thomas the Tank Engine at two, we've slowly become more and more obsessed with rail travel - the natural progression being train trips and vacationing with Amtrak. This book was a fabulous and informative introduction to trains - from the history to interesting anecdotal humor, Jim Loomis writes as if you're sitting across from him in the lounge car sharing a cup of coffee. Highly recommended.

Summary: Revised, up-dated edition in the works!
Review: I am currently working on a new edition of the book, which will include up-dated Amtrak and VIA Rail information. It will also feature a brand new chapter about train travel in Mexico, in particular the sensational ride through the Copper Canyon. According to the publisher, the new editon should be available sometime this Fall. In the meantime, my heartfelt thanks to those who have purchased and enjoyed the first edition

Summary: Without doubt the best all-around book for rail travelers.
Review: I really loved this book. Much more than I expected, because it includes explanations of how passenger rail systems operate and about the jobs various train crew members perform ... yet it's written in a way that any lay person can understand. It's also full of great information for anyone planning or taking a train ride in the U. S. or Canada. My only regret is that I didn't take the book with me on my first-ever cross-country train ride. Wished many times en route that I had brought it along. I totally recommend it! Wilson Graeber Roanoke, VA

Summary: A must read before you board
Review: I was planning to take a train across the country on a sleeper. It is certainly nice to know what to expect before you embark unless you are a real adventurer. Author provides very detailed information about the life on board of the train, living quarters, conditions. This takes about half of the book. Than he describes each route. I found this part very short, for my purpose was to know what kind of cities or sceneries I would expecte to see or where to get off the train for a day or two. So for that reason I was a littel dissapointed. But the TV shows gives you some information anyway. So this book was more valuable for life in train.

Summary: Worthwhile reference
Review: I've found this to be a valuable book. I use it every time I make a train reservation. The information and "insider tips" can help you save money and get better seating and sleeping accommodations.

Summary: The Best Book on North America Train Travel
Review: I've taken a few U.S. East Coast train trips, some overnights with sleeping accomidations, and I thought I knew the system pretty well. I learned so much more after reading this book and I wish I had read it before my first train trip. There are so many little tips that can make your travel better. From the book I learned a lot about the operations behind the scenes and this is helpful information for an overall enjoyable train experience. It's a great book. I have not come across any other book like it. Thinking about a train trip? Get the book and hit the rails. Already have a trip planned? Get the book and enjoy your trip even more.
