Summary: i liked it
Review: I had to write my own review after reading so many negative reviews from others. Once again I was impressed by D.G.'s ability to grab my interest and keep it. Yes, there are many loose ends, but if you read her website you know she will take care of them all. Yes, there are many references about every day life, but that is one of the things I've come to expect(and enjoy) from these books. Really, do you all think the chatacters are going to go around talking about time travel all the time? I loved this book and will continue to wait in suspense for the next one. The whiners need to go back to their Harlequins.

Summary: Patience is a virtue...
Review: After reading some of the very negative reviews on this site, I just had to put my two cents in. I have to agree with the reader who wrote that she enjoyed the opportunity to get to know the characters a little bit better, since they weren't always running around fighting wars--only sometimes--and traveling through time. I especially appreciated the chance to get to know Brianna as herself, not just as Claire and Jamie's daughter, and that is true of Roger as well. This book gives us another chance to appreciate Gabaldon's amazing, fluid writing style; and if you weren't in love with all of the main characters before, you will be after reading this book. While it does drag in places, and it is certainly setting the stage for the next book, The Fiery Cross is a godsend to those, like me, who have been starving for more Gabaldon since the publication of Drums of Autumn.

Summary: I can't even get through it!
Review: Don't get me wrong, I absolutely inhaled the other books in this series. Like others, I am bogged down with characters who are going nowhere, and the book just doesn't have the plot to grab the reader like they have in the past.

Sorry, but this book is a yawn, no matter how many pages it has. I will persevere and try to finish it-eek, have never said THAT about a DG book before! Usually I ignore my family and just hunker down and read 24/7! I hope this is not going to be the new standard for the rest of her books in the Outlander series. I was very dissapointed.

Summary: Slow and ponderous
Review: I agree with so many others who were disappointed with this book. After waiting so long for this installment, it really was a letdown. I'm an avid reader, but not really much of a fan of romance novels, in general. However, once I was convinced to read Outlander, I was hooked on this series. The earlier books were impossible to put down. I loved Diana Gabaldon's attention to detail and ability to place you right in the scene. All of the historical information woven into the story added flavor, and that kind of detail made her books so much more fulfilling than books by other romance writers. But the earlier Outlander books swept the reader away with a really great romance, interesting characters, and an exciting plot (and subplots). They were romance novels, but with a different twist. (Voyager was a bit over the top, though).

It took me forever to work my way through The Fiery Cross. So bogged down in minutia! Nothing really happens. Brianna and Roger are terribly unappealing. There was way too much focus on bodily functions, dirty clouts, and strong odors in this book. Jamie is still the Perfect Man and his relationship with Claire is still fairly interesting, but nothing compelling was going on to hold my attention. Instead of staying up all night to read it (as I did the others), I read it in bits and snatches over a period of a few weeks. I kept plowing through it because I was hoping something interesting was going to happen.

If I had not read the first Outlander books, I would have probably enjoyed The Fiery Cross more than I did. All of the historical detail is basically interesting. But that isn't the only thing I expected from this series. Without a grand plot or breathtaking romance, this book pales dramatically in comparison to the previous books.

And by the way -- what was with the sexual dysfunction between Roger and Brianna that was introduced in one early scene but eventually became a non-issue? Was my mind wandering as I was reading, so I missed something?

Summary: What happened?
Review: I've been an avid fan ever since Outlander, and buy all these books in hardback. I've recommended them to others. So I impatiently awaited Fiery Cross. What a disappointment! Colonial America is an interesting era, and the characters are certainly well known and loved. There was a wealth of material to work with. But this book did little to advance the story line. I could find little in the way of a plot, and don't enjoy reading all the details of "bathroom functions" and breast feeding. I can see no reason for the entire "Aunt Jocasta" segment(s), which absorb much of the space, and am really tired of Brianna and Roger's marital problems. Why did they marry at all?? We all know Diana Gabaldon can do much better!

Summary: The Fiery Cross
Review: Diana Gabaldon is an excellent author. I have read all 4 of her previous books in the Outlander series and waited in great anticipation for the Fiery Cross to be published.

As I like to listen to my books on tape, while exercising or driving, that is what I did with the Fiery Cross.

Diana has once again written a great book of Jamie, Clare, Brianna and Roger. There is romance and adventure and she certainly knows how to keep a listeners attention. I do wish there had been more romance between Jamie and Clare. I know they now have a grown daughter and a grandchild but that doesn't mean the romance needs to be gone. They are still relatively young.

I hope there is a book 6 and Diana doesn't take as long to give it to the readers as she did between books 4 and 5.

Summary: WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT ! ! ! !
Review: I was one of many that patiently waited for the next installment of the Outlander series. I loved the previous 4 books and could not waited to read the next one. The book however, ended up being a huge disappointment. The incredible detail and accurate historic references are still there but, I wasn't transported like in her other books. I kept reading ahead waiting for something to happened. Were was the passion and adventure of the previous books? If this is a preview of the books to come I think I'll pass.

Summary: THIS IS A GREAT BOOK!
Review: I still loved this book, no matter what anyone else (reviewers) says. Yes, it is slow in some parts--but c'mon! I loved seeing what a day in their life was like--sometimes, in the other books, it was just too UNREAL how MANY things could happen to those people! Geesh! Plus, they're "farmers" now (or trying to be, if people would leave them alone) and older, and have kids and grandkids now. Give them a break! They're like, 55 now--not 25! I think that all series have high and low points. This book was giving out tons of background information, which (I think) will help us out a lot in future books--I'll bet that the next one is really action packed.

I truly did feel like I was visiting with old friends, and catching up with their lives, in preparation for exciting times ahead. I'll definately be along for the ride!

Summary: The Fiery Cross
Review: Ms. Gabaldon waited 5 years before writing this current novel, she should have waited another 5. The book was slow moving and failed to hold my intrest as the previous 4 had. Rather than going for quality, Ms. Gabaldon went for quantity-another 900+ page book which was as exciting as watching paint dry. A major disappointment after such a long wait.

Summary: It really was not that bad.
Review: I loved all of the books in this series. The only one I didn't drool over was Voyager. You cannot have every book in a series have you sitting on the edge of your seat. This book was just as interesting as the others were, but a lot more information rather than action and there is action still. I'm still waiting for Brianna to kill Stephan Bonnet. She really hurts him good in this one. D.G. didn't even get as far as she wanted to in this one. So there are at least two more books coming. I thought the book was great. That is what my point really is. This one was a cliff hanger though. Hopefully she'll get the next one out before 2004.
