Rating: Summary: A Witty and Illuminating Guide Review: From the CHARLESTON DAILY NEWS:South Carolina Handbook is a witty and illuminating guide to the Palmetto State. Mike Sigalas covers the state's history, people, shops, events, and accommodations. He delves into locations as various as the Blue Ridge and Hell Hole Swamp...And he gives fine advice on everything from sharks ("Lose the flashy jewelry. Sharks can't see well in South Carolina's murky waters, but they'll see the glitter from that...belly ring of yours") to pronunciation (Sherman is "SAY-tun").... Thank you, Mike. It's a terrific book--and that's gospel. --Rodney Stevens, Charleston Daily News
Rating: Summary: Practical and Very Funny Review: I'd definitely recommend this book for anyone wanting to know more about South Carolina. It's got all the information you could want, lots of interesting background, and on top of that, it's a joy to read. Sigalas cracks me up all through this book. Seriously, my wife came in a half-a-dozen times while I was reading to ask me why I was laughing so hard; she couldn't believe I was reading a travel book. A good read even if you're not going to S.C., and a great book to bring along if you are. It's like traveling with a friend who knows all the spots and has a good sense of humor.
Rating: Summary: Don't forget to pack this book! Review: If you're looking for a guidebook that's witty while informative, this is it! After a casual read even armchair tourists will be planning a visit to South Carolina. For you experienced travelers, this guide will get you in the know--painlessly. Recommended!
Rating: Summary: The Whole Palmetto Review: My book will show you how -the naming of rock group PinkFloyd -the election of JFK -the battle of the Alamo -the hairstyle of Little Richard and -every "motion toadjourn" ever made are all directly attributable to South Carolina. But offbeat trivia's only the icing on the attractions and practicalities coverage available, so that whether you find yourself in Charleston or Cheraw, you have all the info you need to make your experience not just comfortable but memorable. With South Carolina Handbook, I set out to write the sort of guide I've always wanted to travel with. You know what I mean. Ever stand looking at a historic building or natural wonder and thinking, "Man, if I had the slightest clue what I'm looking at, this'd probably be very interesting"? South Carolina Handbook is a fun-to-read, comprehensive guidebook that not only describes attractions but gives you the historical and cultural insights you need to fully appreciate what you're seeing while you're there, and not later (when you finally read the glossy tabletop book you bought in the gift shop). And South Carolina Handbook includes maps in the appropriate chapters, to help as you're figuring out your routes for the day. Throw in photos, interesting sidebars, and a number of timesaving indexes in the back, and you've got yourself a handheld South Carolina library--a thoroughly practical, readable companion for your Palmetto travels--whether you're a first-time visitor or a life-long resident. All my best, Mike Sigalas
