Rating: Summary: Jan Prince's 4th Edition Review: I have no idea why this book has 4 1/2 stars -- it should have 5 stars!
Jan Prince has written the most comprehensive, easy to read, best organized guide to French Polynesia that anyone could ever find! She lives there, for cryin' out loud, has spent SO much time updating the 3rd edition to make everything current and accurate, and has the most accurate reviews of any of the guides on the market! She is the best of the best of the travel guides! (And I already own all the other ones...)
I've been traveling to Tahiti for ten years now, and wouldn't THINK of ever going without Jan Prince's latest version in my carryon! No matter how much you might THINK you might know before you get there, from travel agents or from the stuff the tour company sends you or from message boards, Jan's guide is the ULTIMATE life-saving info when you get there! She has saved our butts a thousand times in a pinch in finding transports, hotels, excursions, before we go and while there! She truly helps folks plan before they get there, and is helpful after you arrive... She is a true gem! No other guide comes close!
Don't leave home without it, folks!
Rating: Summary: An American woman's advice, who was a tourist, now resident. Review: I was born in Alabama and was living in Texas when I first visited Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora in 1968. I moved to Tahiti in 1971 and have lived in Tahiti and Moorea year-round since then. My work as a free-lance travel writer, journalist and tour guide has taken me throughout all the archipelagoes of French Polynesia, traveling by airplane, copra schooner, deluxe passenger ship, private yacht or outrigger canoe. I enjoy helping visitors to awaken to the life and beauty of Tahiti, and to appreciate the special charm of these exotic isles. My 568-page book is the only travel book on Tahiti that has been written by an American woman who has experienced Tahiti as a tourist and a long-term resident. You'll have another perspective on traveling in French Polynesia when you read my book. It takes you to all the islands where there are accommodations for travelers.
Rating: Summary: just back from FP Review: Jan Prince does an amazing job depicting the islands we visited. I am so glad I picked her book up first. It is quite thorough (even though dated as the US dollar's value has changed). I have to agree with her suggestions of "The Best Hotels". We stayed in Hotel Bora Bora, Kia Ora Sauvage, and the Manihi Pearl Beach Resort and had experiences beyond compare. Ms. Prince also mentions several Polynesian residents (ie. boat owners and hotel managers, and a multitalented Patrick on Bora Bora) who we had the good fortune to meet. I also used Lonely Planet and Hidden Tahiti to research our vacation, both useful but I learned the most from Ms. Prince. I only regret it's size; I chose to bring Lonely Planet with me because it weighed less.
Rating: Summary: Tahiti to be enjoyed at least once in a lifetime Review: Jan Prince has done it again! if not even better yet ! As a tour operator specializing only to the South Pacific and Part time resident on the island of Moorea, I still find out about the lesser known secret restaurants , activities or those unknown properties on the lesser known islands. I recommend to my clients at flytahiti.com this book to prepare for their great and unique vacation to Paradise !
Rating: Summary: The most used of 3 guide books we took with us to Tahiti. Review: Jan Prince's Tahiti & French Polynesia Guide was a great resource to have with us on our trip to French Polynesia. The restaurant and tour references were the most up to date and accurate of the three guidebooks that we took along. We used this book 90% of the time. It was very evident that the book was written by someone that lived in the area. We followed some of the hints on places to see and things to do that were not mentioned in the other guidebooks that we brought along, and could only be known by someone intimate with the area.
Rating: Summary: The best guide book on Tahiti ever published Review: My wife and I first went to Tahiti in 1976.Since that time we have bought land and built our vacation home on Moorea, and will always love French Polynesia. We have read almost every guide book ever published and Jan's book is at the very top of the list.Don't go to Tahiti without it as it covers all the questions you will have. This book is much better than the coconut radio for information.
Rating: Summary: Good book Review: Out of the 4 books I got on French Polynesia, this rates #2. I like the format of the book, the way she puts things in bold (places to go, things to eat etc.) saves you a lot of time in searching. Her book is the most recent of the 4 and is good but very similar to Robert Kay's book "Hidden Tahiti". Not sure why but it seems they (the publisher) decided to use an unusually large print (rather than make a seemingly smaller book?). Nice descriptions of sights, places to stay and tour operators. I especially liked that she said how long the tours were for and what times they ran. Made it very helpful in planning the days.
