Rating: Summary: The Saints have Blessed Us with this! Review: Merry Meet!...My name is Jet and I recently purchased this fine book. I must say that this book had alot of usefull information in it. I use the saints in my own practice, incorporating their names with the names of the Orishas, as was origionaly done. The One and only thing I found lacking in this work was the chapter on candles seemed a bit inconclusive, there were names of candles, but most of them Ive not been able to find. However that dosent matter as substitutions can certainly be made. No matter what type of path you follow this book could be helpfull to you, although much of the material in this book presents as catholic in nature please keep in mind that origionaly when slaves were brought here they hid the names of their Goddesses and Godes in saints so you can certainly use it without even haveing to believe in saints. I hope you all love this book, and please read his other book, Charms Spells, and Formulas....
Rating: Summary: A book of Saints, but little magic Review: Since most of Llewellyn's customer base are just people rebelling against xtianity, i'm not surprised this book is unpopular. It is not an all-encompassing work on the Saints but it is one of the few modern books that addresses the topic of spiritualism and magic as an acceptible part of the christian religion. If you want to DO magic, there are many older, better, books out there like the _Long Lost Friend_, the _Key of King Solomon_, Buckland's _Practical Candle-burning Rituals_, _Secret of the Psalms_, by Godfrey A. Selig, or variouss books on the kabala. This book is more a work of philosophy, explaining a magical approach to the Saints no longer popular in much of america outside New Orleans and Hispanic communities, but once prevalent in many catholic, spiritist, and even some protestant churches. Unfortunately, the author can't seem to make up his mind about whether he's writing to a christian or wiccan audience, often explaining how the practices are "okay" first to one and then the other. Since little love is lost between these groups, he'd have been better off addressing one or the other.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful source information of the saints Review: The informtion on the various Catholic saints would be of interest to Catholics or anyone wanting to know what saint should be petitioned for the various probelms people face in life. The section of the Mystical Novena is also of interest as this form of prayer is very ancient going back to pre-christian Roman times.
Rating: Summary: Truely Excellent Review: The Magical Power of the Saints for me has been excellent. It is a good reference book on the use of the seven-day candles sold in many botanicas and even in the grocery stores. It includes information which may be given to you in most stores that sell spiritual supplies. From my own experience, some people working in these stores don't know much to give me the information I need. For me this book is a great reference sourse.
Rating: Summary: Most Imformative Review: The Magical Power of the Saints has been the most informative that I ever encountered. It certainly cleard up a lot questions that I had on my mind. I truly enjoyed the information of the spell workings given in this book which has greatly help me to understand how to put everything together. I truly feel it is better than any other book with genuine folk type spells. Highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful reference material Review: The Magical Power of the Saints has helped my new employees learn about the spiritual supplies sold in Botanicas. Our customers are always coming into the store asking for advice. Our employees must know the products we sell and what they are used for. The Magical Power of the Saints has served as a wonderful reference guide. Why wasn't a book like this written years ealier???
Rating: Summary: Mumbo Gumbo Review: This book is an unfortunate patchwork of unoriginal approaches to very real human problems. The author purports to be able to solve these problems with his crudely pieced together prayers and rituals. As unimaginative and sentimental as the prayers cards he copied, nothing in this book was original except the authors rearrangment of these tired, old practices. Most, if not all, of them were not accurately copied. I found the author's including Xeroxes of his Louisiana state "credentials" amusing; as if a state document can give power to a spiritual work!
Rating: Summary: It's useful, but unethical Review: When I first read this book, I was appalled at the authors ethics. Some spells that are listed and methods in the book are COMPLETELY unethical and will only lead the practitioner into trouble. BUT, it is a decent reference on how to use the Saints in magickal work. My advice is find a better book, but if you already own this one, keep it around as refernce. Nix the obviously unethical methods he uses.
