Summary: Great information
Review: Absolutely the most accurate guide to Washington, D.C.! The tips and descriptions of the sites were right on the money. Other travelers actually asked how I got all the inside info and I directed them to this excellent book.

Summary: Outdated Information spoils this book (and our day trips)
Review: I am a fan of the Unofficial Guide series. So I was quite shock by the inaccuracies or omissions I found in this bk (7th edition).

Example 1. It says to proceed first to the petting zoo section of the Natural History museum as it gets crowded quickly. When I got to the Museum, the front desk guide told me that section had been closed over a year ago.

Example 2. It recommended the Tourmobile bus to see the city. Tickets are $5.50 a person. Dead wrong. Tickets were $18 a person.

Example 3. We got to the Air & Space museum at 10 sharp and the line was about 50-people long. Due to 9/11, everyone has to be bag-checked now. No mention of that in the book. Forgivable. What was not forgivable was that it didn't say there was ANOTHER Entrance on the other side of the building and that has NO LINES at all. Don't call yourself the Unofficial Guide if you can't point out these things.

I was tempted to return the book and get my money back but couldn't be bothered. Thanks so much.

Summary: Required Reading
Review: I just returned from Washington D.C. and I found that this book is a must read - unless you have two or more weeks to spend traipsing around the mall. Since my trip was primarily a sight-seeing trip, this book saved my family countless hours by listing all of the sights, giving a description of each, letting me know which ones would be of interest to my family, and giving me guidance on how to plan each day in order to minimize wasted travel time. I used "The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World" to plan my last vacation and both of these books are worth the price many times over.

Summary: The section on the Metro is worth the price of the book
Review: I used this book last summer when my 9-year-old son and I visited DC. It gave us several suggestions of activities that would not have otherwise occured to us. The section on the Metro was great! It does a great job of describing what to expect on the Metro which is a clean, safe and inexpensive way to travel around the city.

Summary: Excellent
Review: I was born in DC and have lived in the area all my life. At the time of this writing (June 1999), this is the best all-around book describing the streets and sights of the Nation's Capital. Note this book is not padded with color photos. There are many line drawing maps, and several pages of B/W photographs demonstrating using the Metro subway system, which always confuses visitors. Be sure to get the latest edition since Amazon still lists older editions as in print.

Summary: Nice book. Too heavy to carry.
Review: Imagine the comprehensive guide to good deals, unfamiliar sites, and transportation options in the Washington D.C. area! This is a great collection of reviews and suggestions, tips and recommendations. Spend some time in advance of your planning to scope out great deals on rooms, tours and seasonal advantages. You can plan a great trip with unexplored opportunities such as breaks to rest in parks and gardens, or ways to avoid long lines and frustration.

There is even a great section for business travellers. A good purchase and a fine resource.

The maps and the guide to the public transportation system are the best I have ever seen.
