Summary: Lots of pretty pictures but light on recommendations
Review: The main reason why I buy these guides is for the recommendations (i.e. how to get from point A to point B, which hotels are best, etc.) Though this book provides a few pages of recommendations, it is more of a picture book on NYC. I agree that it will be a great souvenir and tells a lot of great little facts about buildings in the city. For something more practical (and less expensive), I recommend getting a NYC map and checking out the NYC tourist sites on the web.

Summary: Carry it with you on your visit to NYC.
Review: This book is not as detailed as some guide books on New York City but it's probably got most of the information most people need if they're going to spend a couple of days in the city. It's not as big as many of the other books on NYC but it's well illustrated & has a lot of information for its size. Plus, because of its size it was always with me during the 3 days my wife & I spent in NYC.

Summary: Great Illustrations and information
Review: This book is one of the most informative travel guides to New York I have ever read. The overview drawings are second only to the Knompf Guide to New York.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Too Heavy
Review: This book was great except that it is a very heavy book. The pages are a glossy magazine-like paper. I walked a lot while I was in NY & this book in my small backpack/purse was very heavy. My sister said I should rip out the pages I needed each day -- but it's such a pretty book I couldn't bring myself to do that!

Summary: Skip This Scaled Down Version - Just Buy the Regular Size
Review: This is a scaled down version of the regular Eyewitness NY book.

I have to confess up front. I love these books. I must have a dozen. I really like the Paris book, and the one for Prague, and Stockholm, and South Africa, and .... You get all the detailed material similar to other great travel books plus you get great visuals.

The photos and descriptions and cutaway drawings are excellent and more than make up for any lack of small detail. But there is lots of detail here. The book includes the history of New York City and many details on the art, art galleries, parks, cutaway views of historical buildings, and many other things of interest. That is the good part.

The bad part is why buy this book when there is a much better Eyewitness Travel book on New York for a few extra dollars. The big book is 5 stars. This is an edited and scaled down sibling.

Recommendation: skip this thin 2 star or 3 star book and just buy the regular book which is easily a 5 star book.

Summary: Worth every cent!
Review: This is my second New York book, but the one I grab first. Up to date travel information, good maps and estimates of costs (e.g. taxi vs bus) and relevant telephone numbers. As a South African working and living in the States, I found it essential for all travelling needs. Bravo!

Summary: Strongly recommended
Review: Used this book while visitng Manhattan for three days and can strongly recommend it as an excellent guide. Everything you need to know is included. Look no further.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Totally comprehensive and fascinating
Review: When I arrived in New York from Seattle to explore the possibilities of moving, I asked several people to recommend a good guide. No one could. I stumbled across this book after a couple dozen other titles and was wowed by the information. Everything you could want to know is in this book. Even skeptical New Yorkers have been impressed with the detail of this book. Don't look any further.

Summary: The kind of quality you expect from Eye-Witness
Review: Wow! I knew I loved Eye-Witness Travel Guides,I'm abolutely hooked on their incredibly useful method of presentation, but this is the first time I return to a place I once lived and used one of their guides. What a "Eureka" moment! Using their pictoral presentation of maps and sights, I "SAW" New York in its entirety for the first time. The overview and breaking down of the city into sections gives the tourist total control of the situation.
I highly recommend this book for the sights and maps.
The restaurant recommendations were not very good. After the amazing recommendations in their Budapest and Paris Guides, this list was a disappointment. Buy a different Restaurant and Hotel guide, but use this to get around and make the most of your time.
