Summary: Four Weeks in New York
Review: I am planning to spend four weeks in New York in your summer, my winter. Wanting to buy a good travel guide I went to the largest book shop in Melbourne (AU). With a choice of around 100 books - this book stood out. Concentrating more on what to do and see then the usual 'where can I stay for under $50 a night'or want a plethora of restaurant this book took me into the galleries, museums and architecture delights of New York. I feel it is designed for the traveller who wants to jump in boots and all. Thanks to this book I know my four weeks will be filled with exploring this fascinating city. Best book to get.

Summary: Great photos
Review: I bought this and the Fodor's and only used this one. I love the pictures - they really help a lot. They also group everything by neighborhood and give a colored map so you know what streets are included.

I definitely recommend this guidebook.

Summary: A decent introduction to New York
Review: I found the Eyewitness Guide to be unexpectedly detailed in listing the various sights of the city, though not nearly as much as a more textual guide, e.g., the Fodor's. I'm sure, however, the photography is an element which helps tourists orient themselves quite a bit more easily than the more cumbersome (but more informative) Fodor's. That said, quite a bit of history and explanation is woven into the Eyewitness as well, and it makes up for its relative conciseness with enticing design. The guide is a book which would actually make one want to visit New York, and one which makes navigation within it quite simplified. Furthermore, it seems more portable. Combining quite a bit of information with the visual beauty of a National Geographic guide made this a success.

The guide does seem to be tailored quite a bit toward non-American tourists, with descriptions of how payphones work and of American cuisine. Still, a bit of laughably obvious information to Americans is made up for with such features as two page spreads for relatively unvisited museums and attractions, with isometric diagrams and "must-see" exhibits.

Summary: Superb piece of work!! NYC at its best. A must buy !!!
Review: I have been collecting DK's travel guides for a long time and the least I can say about them is that there are absolutely no such travel guides available in bookshops like these ones. They capture all the very best of the cities and countries and allow you to enjoy the most of your travel destination.

Concerning to New York City, DK again manages to do a great job. I doubt there is a better way to explore NY.

I've been in NY three times. At the end of June, I will be there again. How could I get in the plane without DK travel guide???

It's a must buy, believe me. Guarantee your copy right away!!!

Summary: If you need an all-rounder, this is it
Review: I have the greatest respect for Eyewitness Guides. Although usually I buy a few guidebooks for every destination where I travel, where Eyewitness Guide is available, it is my first choice (where there is no Eyewitness, my second-best choice is usually Fodor's).

Eyewitness Guides have had more than their fair share of unfriendly and condescending reviews - most of it coming from self-styled intellectuals or people who like to see themselves (often without a good reason, really) as being far above the crowd and "dumb tourists". Eyewitness series has been criticized as too glossy, too beatutiful, too clearly laid out and ignoring backpacker's needs.

Most of this criticism is just sour grapes: it is difficult to deny that the guide is more visually appealing than almost anything else on the market, it is very clearly laid out and very well researched. And it is a joy to use.

If it is your first Eyewitness Guide, you will be amazed how clear and entertaining a book can be about buildings and museums. You will also wonder how come no-one thought of it before.

It is true that Eyewitness Guide New York may not be the best choice for the shoestring traveller; also, in all fairness, recommendations and listings of restaurants and hotels are superficial. As a city with breathtaking diversity of cuisines, New York surely deserved a better eating-out coverage. On the other hand, it is easy to see how space might have been a restriction - no-one wants a thousand-page volume in their pocket.

As the guide to a DESTINATION itself and the ultimate source of day-to-day reference - maps, transport, sightseeing highlights - Eyewitness is unbeatable. No wonder there are now many imitations of this style.

New York is unique in the sense that different people approach it with wildly varying expectations of what they want to see and experience: in this sense, cities like Paris and Rome are more one-dimensional - or, rather, there are more travellers who aprroach them with predictable expectations. Therefore, for New York you will probably need anther book to supplement your special interest in this city, whatever it is - art, shopping, music, gastronomy, ethnic heritage or architecture. But I do recommend you buy Eyewitness guide first. Do yourself this favor.

Summary: A Great Guide Book Even for a Local
Review: I live outside of New York City and rarely visit the city. But after Sept 11th I wanted a guide that I could use to explore the places I've never been to (as well as ones I have been to). The DK Guides are great for the amount of information they provide and this guide is no exception. There is information in this book that even a native New Yorker may not know. The book talks about the history and architecture of buildings that you may otherwise walk by. There are museums that I've never heard of. There are street by street maps of some of Manhattan's great neighborhoods. I have used the book to plan a walking trip from Penn Station to Rockefeller Center and back via Time Square. I am planning many future walking trips with this book. If the book is two heavy to carry, buy two. One for permanent reference and the other to "rip out" the pages of the places you are planning to visit. This guide book is well worth the money.

You can find everything: since a map of a Micro museum, to the way of eating a Hot Dog. It has everything. you can buy it only for curiosity, to read it like a novel, and you are going to love it too.

Summary: An apropos 10 bucks...how can you go wrong?
Review: Manhattan made easy!

I went to the NYC recently for the first time and I loved it! This is the only book you will need. Great maps, including the subway, made it REAL easy to learn your way around Manhattan. Also, gives you interesting reading material for the flight!

I went with a wonderful person who already knew her way around, but she still kept asking me to see the book.

There are bigger books, but this one is better. It doesn't force you on specific paths, rather it highlights things along your own path. And to top it off, unlike other books, it fits in your back jeans pocket if you don't choose to carry a backpack (which I highly recommend.)

They even have a top 10 "Cheap Eats." However, they missed this great tiny fallafel place in Greenwich Village: an awesome lunch for two (including sodas) for 8 bucks! Make sure you traipse up to Washington Square Park to eat it.

Also, CBGB's at Bleeker & Bowery. It's a don't miss, but not in the book.

PS. If you go to Brooklyn, you might need another book (so you don't get lost :-). Fortunately, New Yorkers are awesome people and helped us get back to Manhattan.

Absolutely the best book I could find at national bookstores that begin their name with a "B." I wonder if that's why amazon.com chose an "A."
