Summary: A Classic Classic
Review: If you're going to Mexico, especially if you have even the slightest interest in Mexicans as human beings and not just a backdrop to your vacation - a rare virtue in some North American circles - and you're planning on getting out of the usual gringo mainline, you simply must read this book. There is no better book on Mexico available. It's funny, it's informative, and best of all, it's simpatico.

It won't tell you about specific places in Mexico to visit, but it will tell you what you will need to know in order to function on the ground anywhere in Mexico - eating, drinking, camping, hotelling, what to look for when you buy things, dealing with the police, insuring your car - in general, how to be a minimally offensive gringo. You'll thank yourself for reading it, and you'll thank Mr. Franz for writing it, after you get there.

Summary: OK, but then again...
Review: It's a very enjoyable read, no doubt about that. What you WON'T find is a bunch of addresses of hotels and restaurants, no maps, and now bus schedules. What you WILL find is a very long series of amusing tips and hints about travel in Mexico. However, the book is a little dated, and it's been many a year since Carl Franz travelled through Mexico in the style here related--his current guided trips through Sonora will cost you in the thousands, which is certainly not what this book was all about!

Summary: An encyclopedia of "real-life" wealth for Mexico fans!
Review: Many, many, years ago we purchased this book because a friend "begged" us to read it. Since then we have traveled comfortably to Mexico via "hippie van", train, bus, plane, motorcycle, hitchhiking, and bicycle.....I think horseback is the only mode left. We have had the book with us EVERY time as it is a valuable source of info needed on the road for any length of time in the wonderful world of Mexico!

Summary: This is a must read for anyone planning to drive through Mex
Review: One of the best travel books I have read. It is the only one that is thorough enough to even provide some of the information I need for traveling to and from Mexico with my parrot. It does take a sort hippie bias for travel which doesn't fit quite with my preferences. I am not one for dirt floors and such. In any case it is a great read and a must for anyone who is not strictly resort bound.

I would also highly recommend "On Mexican Time" by Tony Cohan for additional reading for anyone thinking about an extended stay or maybe retirement in Mexico.

Summary: World Class! An all-time favorite!
Review: This book is very, very funny. You will find yourself reading passages aloud to family members. As a former Club Med Sports Instructor and world traveller for many years I know all the best travel books- this is truly the emerald in the crown. Travel writing + how to create your own adventure in our wonderful neighbor to the south.

Summary: THE BEST!!!
Review: This book isn't just the best travel guide about Mexico, it's probably the best travel oriented book about any country!! The People's Guide is an essential reference for anyone planning on traveling or living south of the border, not to mention a simply entertaining read!

Summary: Quite simply, "The definitive book on travelling in Mexico"
Review: Too many guidebooks focus on "what to see" in Mexico, or which hotel has the best "swim up bar". The People's Guide to Mexico, focuses instead on the traveller, and Mexicans, and culture and customs. Mexico is not just a "place" but a social happening. With a clever combination of "how to's" and anectodes, the author weaves a trail of travel wisdom and laughter, that teaches the reader how to negotiate their way through this facinating country. In creating this 25 year-old masterpiece,an amazing amount of energy was devoted to providing the user with tons of useful facts, and figures. This is one hell of a good book

Summary: Indispensible. Don't leave home without it.
Review: We first bought this book in 1983 when we went crazy. We sold all our possessions, bought a Jeep, loaded our 4 year old son up and headed for Mexico. We used this book as a dictionary, etiquette primer, cookbook, and shear entertainment. It filled many candlelite (no electricity) evenings in our cabin on the beach. Now 14 years later we still have the same book and still read it often. It reflects true situations (often hilarious)in real Mexico, far from the tourist infested psuedo-American playgrounds as well as giving many helpful hints (how to make a clothes washer out of a van)on how to survive in Mexico on practically nothing

Summary: The Bible on Mexico
Review: We just returned from our first trip to Mexico where we spent our time in remote Pacific Coast villages and this book made our visit wonderful.

It is culturally enlightening and helps with the everyday aspects of getting along in Mexico. Everything on how to shop for a hammack to how to buy food and gasoline. Or whether you should take your wife into that little cantina outside of town. This book went in our backpack everyday. There wasn't anything it could'nt answer.

The guide books tell you how to get there, the People's Guide tell you what to do once you are there.

We highly recommend this book for anyone who travels to Mexico and wants to enhance their experience.
