Summary: Sticking With The Best!
Review: I live in upstate New York. I have the luxory of being able to visit NYC 2-3 times per year. I recently borrowed "Streetwise Manhattan" from a friend of mine for a visit to Ground Zero in late March. I was hooked. I can't tell you how comfortable I felt walking around knowing that I could refer to this easy to read, compact & durable map at any time. Easy to follow - clear depiction of any street, most landmarks as well as transportation lines. I liked it so much I just ordered the Streetwise for Washington D.C. for my trip this summer. You can be sure I'll have a Streetwise map for any major city I visit.

Summary: A Ripoff
Review: I was appalled when Streetwise Manhattan arrived. I've been to New York many times, but planning a visit for a week in March with my wife, I thought the advertised compactness of this product would be convenient for us carry. But, it is extremely hard to read and devoid of most useful information other than a hard to read street layout. Its only advantage is that it is a hard plastic which won't rip when one puts it in a pocket or purse. I am familiar with many city maps, such as the Michelin Maps of Paris, and in comparison this is simply a terrible product. I ordered a New York Mapguide at the same time, and it is a MUCH better product for almost the same price. If you are an AAA member, you can get also get a good free map of New York from them. The Michelin Guide to New York also has much better maps of the areas most tourists visit. I note that a number of people on Amazon.com rate it highly, but I wonder if they have ever seen competing products. I also note that reviews of Streetwise guides to other cities get a number of negative reviews and I suspect for good reason.

Summary: No Chrysler Building?
Review: I'm a big fan of Streetwise maps, and Manhattan is no exception; my only problem with it, the only reason it doesn't get five stars, is because I'm also a big fan of the Chrysler Building, and it isn't marked on the map. I suppose that's because it's not open to the public, unlike the Empire State, and you don't need to know where it is in order to see it if you're in Manhattan, but still... not entirely rational, I suppose, but a mild disappointment nonetheless.

Summary: A must have for vising or moving to NYC
Review: I'm in the process of moving to NYC, and as such have been visiting to try to get aquainted with the various neighborhoods, etc. I bought a variety of maps and tourist books to help me get around, and ths Streetwise Manahattan map was BY FAR the most useful (much better than the Lonely Planet New York map...).

I think the thing that makes it stand out more than Lonely Planet was how the subway stops were annotated with the specific subway lines that stop there, allowing you to plan your travel both above and under ground. Lonely Planet's map only indicates that there is a subway station, which is totally useless due to the variety of subway lines in NYC.

Summary: Exceptionally detailed
Review: Lived there - loved it but I could have saved myself hours of wandering around lost with this in my pocket. Picked it up and reminisced about so many great neighborhoods and holes in the walls in Manhattan. It's a deliciously, culturally engaging place to visit but can be dauntingly intimidating if you're unfamiliar with the culture and lay out. Manhattan has it's own cadence and with this in your purse you can keep up and be confident you're headind in the right direction.
