The author's no nonense style is much appreciated! I would highly recommend Potholes to Paradise to anyone who is planning to spend an extended period of time in wonderful Costa Rica....
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: behind the scenes in Costa Rica Review: As a tourist, I did not intend to live in Costa Rica but I found this book extremely interesting - and entertaining - as it does point out much that is not obvious to the visitor's eye. It's an easy-to-read account that provides a good view of social and economic factors which are not evident if you are simply touring natural parks and enjoying the animals, birds and scenery. I also liked the last section, in which Tessa gives some advice on what to expect when you move to a foreign country.

Review: I bought a beach lot on Playa Potrero seven years ago and have visited the country yearly since then. Tessa's book made me smile--because I share so many of her opinions and experiences. She is right on the money and anyone thinking of traveling and/or moving to Costa Rica should add this to their list of "must-reads." I read the entire book on a two and a half hour plane trip--it's easy to read and full of helpful information.
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: I found it helpful Review: I did like that it was "part diary, part travelogue, part advice column" instead of so straightforward a text. Desultory, yes, but inviting--sort of like REAL travel and life abroad!Another book I found helpful before my "relocation-research trip" was a photo-essay book called, "Costa Rica: The Last Country The Gods Made." It too gave me a feeling for the country in a randomized sort of way. But that's not to say it wasn't wonderful information and insight into Tico culture--like Borner's book!
