Summary: The Best Disneyland Book
Review: I had been to Disneyland twice before I found this book so I can tell you first hand what a differnce this book makes in trip planning and in making your day at DL the most complete. The book covers every ride and attraction at DL. It has great information on the local hotels. It has goobs of information on going to DL with kids of all ages. If you are not experienced at doing DL, then get this book. Because of the information in this book you'll be able to see and do twice as much especially on busy days at the park. The currect edition also covers Disney's new California Adventure park built in the former DL parking lot. 5 stars at least!

Summary: My Disneyland Bible!
Review: I have been using this book for 10 years and it has been my guide for getting the most out of the park. The park attendance portion of the book has always provided me with the ideal days to attend. My family and I visited Disneyland the week after Thanksgiving last year. As described, the crowd was minimal with little or no lines on the popular rides (ever go on Splash Mountain a second time without getting back in line?). Don't go to Disneyland without it!

Summary: Inaccurate Data Causes Problem
Review: I thought this book was great, then I went to Disneyland. On the whole I like how the book is organized and thought that it was good in the way it set an outline as to how to go about your day.

Several problems with the book. W

1) Book said that the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas was the least crowded. We went the week after Christmas and it was incredibly crowded. 90 minute lines on all the popular rides. Very hard to move. It was the worst of both worlds because they were very crowded and several good rides were closed plus I think they were understaffed. Since it is an unofficial guide, I don't know where they get there data. It is out of date.

2) The plans that list what to do, do not include times or give you a back up in case you cannot do the plan. Because it was so crowded, we could not do the plan.

3) The plan for toddlers did not include the Christmas Parade which was spectacular.

4) In general, the author tries to give ratings for each ride, but I have to disagree with him on a lot of items.

5) Does not really cover dining in the park very well.

6) New rides at disneyland, like the Winnie the Pooh ride was not covered.

Overall, it is a good book to use, but you should read other tour guides and surf the web to get a fuller picture.

Summary: No Big Fault: Falls Short Of Sister Publication
Review: I used this book's sister publication, The Unofficial Guide To Walt Disney World 1999 (UG-WDW), when we travelled there last year. That book was an invaluable source of information, complete in the extreme. (I'd rate it 5 stars.)

This year we're heading to Disneyland, so I purchased The Unofficial Guide To Disneyland 2001 (UG-DL) sight unseen. While it does provide much of the same valuable types of information as the UG-WDW, it falls short in a few significant ways:

- The UG-DL doesn't include individual reviews of each area restaurant as the UG-WDW does.

- The UG-DL doesn't include individual reviews of the major area hotels as the UG-WDW does (though the former does include overall ratings).

- The UG-DL doesn't include information about the behind-the-scenes tours provided at Disneyland as the UG-WDW guide does for Walt Disney World.

- In many cases, text in the UG-DL is copied directly from the UG-WDW, just the name of the park is changed. While this is appropriate in some cases, in others it is downright misleading. An especially egregious error is the inclusion in the UG-DL of a chart of annual attendance patterns for Walt Disney World, rather than Disneyland.

- The UG-DL doesn't include the chart of recommended attraction visitation times present in the UG-WDW.

- The UG-DL doesn't contain a section of tips for specialized groups like singles or seniors as the UG-WDW does.

The UG-DL DOES include something that isn't present in the UG-WDW (but should be): an interesting comparison of the attractions at Disneyland to those of Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom.

A trip to Disneyland is sure to be a less involved affair than a trip to Walt Disney World, so I wouldn't expect the UG-DL to be as comprehensive as the UG-WDW. Nevertheless, the UG-DL feels a little too skimpy in comparison.

All that said, the UG-DL is still a more valuable book than any other on the same topic.

Summary: Southern Californian swears by it!
Review: I've lived in Southern California all of my life, and Disneyland is something we do at least once every year. But until this guide, even we were missing out on all that Disneyland had to offer. This book even covered the best time of year and day of the week to go to avoid the crushing crowds, and ways to avoid the hour and a half-long lines for the most popular attractions. It even had information on beating the daily traffic on the freeeways! By following Sehlinger's sound advice, we were able to really enjoy the park, get a great room at a great price, see more of the park in less hours, and avoid the worst days of the year to visit. It has made our trips to Disneyland more magical.

Summary: Disneyland inside and out!
Review: My daughter and I just got back from Disneyland and would not have accomplished half of our sights without this book! At first I did all the searching for tips on the web but that got very confusing after awhile. I found this book and read the first 163 pages in a matter of hours! THIS IS A MUST HAVE! Explains fastpass, character meals and how to do Disneyland in a day, two days, with kids, without kids.. tips on strollers and anything else you could imagine! We looked like we had been there a 100 times people who were without this book kept asking me.. how do you use this or how did you get that?? LOL! I did run in to several hundred other smart people with this book and everyone agreed it's a lifesaver! There's extensive reviews on EACH ride.. this way I knew in advance if my daughter was even going to go on it.. no sense waiting an hour online only to have your child chicken out! Each review is broken into age groups, quality, length of ride, best time to get inline, etc! GET THIS BOOK!! YOU WON'T BE SORRY!

Summary: Don't go to Disneyland without it
Review: My husband and I took our 3 year old to Disneyland this November, and I credit this book for making the experience as enjoyable and low-key as it was. Before I bought this book, I had ideas in my head about how we should see Disneyland, but they were WRONG WRONG WRONG. This book will tell you what days to go, what kind of ticket to buy, what time to arrive, what attractions are best to see at what time of day, etc. The brief descriptions of each ride are very informative - who would think that a 3 year old who loved the Haunted Mansion and Splash Mountain might be completely terrified by Snow White's Scary Adventures? The authors, that's who. The book also provides "Touring Plans" for cramming the absolute maximum number of attractions into any given day - we didn't even attempt this, but just reading through the strategies helped us to get our expectations and mindset in order. The book is fun to read. If you're thinking that all this planning, preparation, and strategizing will take away from the "magic" of the experience, think again. How magical is standing in a 2 hour line with a tired kid? Read this book, and you'll never have to know.

Summary: A necessary investment for your visit!
Review: My husband and I were planning a one-day only visit to Disneyland with our almost 3-yr old son. I wanted to be sure to maximize the visit. This book helped soooo much! I was probably way over-organized (had even been dreaming about the visit) but with the tips in the book we were ahead of the crowds all day. I modified the "Dumbo or Die in a Day" tour plan to suit our interests and by early afternoon we had seen most all the attractions that interested us (some twice!) and had pictures taken with many characters! We left the park for a few hours to eat, swim, nap and reentered the park to enjoy the remaining attractions we had left on our list and revisited a few favorites again!

Parents of small children - read and follow the "switching off" and "chuck bubba relay" techniques -- they work!

The book was a bit depressing to read before the visit with horror stories about going to Disney with young children, but I think it helped keep our expectations low and therefore the reality came in very, very high. Only drawback to the book was that since it's published in the autumn it was a little out of date with missing a major new attraction and another one being closed - but I knew that info from the disneyland website and just adjusted.

I definitely will use this type of book before other amusement park destinations to maximize time.

I feel this was probably the best tool I used for planning the visit to Disneyland and it's fun to read too!
