Summary: The Only Book You Need for Kauai
Review: This book was excellent. We planned our days, our meals, everything based on this book and were never let down. We brought along two other books and found them no where near as useful. After the first couple of days, we only referred to this one.

Review: My BF and I have gone to Maui 2 years in a row and then we decided to visit Kauai the next year. This guide was extremely helpful in planning our trip and allowed us to find out quickly and easily the best things to do and see while we were there. What scored big points for me were the detailed maps and recommendations on activities, places to visit, and dining locations. It was funny because while we were driving around the island I would have the book on my lap--if we saw something interesting we would flip through the pages to see what they had to say about it. The descriptions and ratings were almost always right on the mark. Whenever you're going somewhere new, the hardest thing to do is find accurate information about the place, especially information that only 'the locals' would know about, in this case where you can get the best shaved ice (the truck), what restaurant has the best dessert (Roy's), which hole in the wall serves the best rice plate, which rental place offers the best deals and equipment, etc. Almost everyone we know that decides to go to Kauai ends up borrowing the book from us and finds it just as useful as we did. If you're planning on going to Kauai I would highly recommend you get this book before you go. I wish all guide books were written like this one!

Summary: An excellent and engaging guide
Review: On our first night in Kauai my wife and I picked a restaurant that looked wonderful, but the food was dry and unappetizing. The next day we found The Ultimate Guide, bought it, and ended up with a list of great places to have dinner that was longer than our remaining stay. Every place was as described in the guidebook. My one complaint is that it doesn't let you know if the restaurant's non-smoking section is up to par. There were places that we never, ever would have stopped, but they turned out to be unique and fascinating. Without the guidebook we would have missed them entirely. As other reviewers have said, this book is fun to read. It's not boring; it doesn't make you think "Can I stop reading this and get on with my day?" There were times when we'd stop the car and my wife would want to keep reading the book rather than get out into the sunshine. I can't recommend this book enough.

Summary: Great Book.
Review: This guide covers all the bases and the writers appear to have an intimate knowledge of every aspect. I liked the aerial views of all the resorts which gives you a good understanding of the overall layout of each facility and its proximity to the ocean. Very important when making reservations with those oceanfront and oceanview rooms. The maps are terrific, with great detail of each section of the island. Having read a description of all the activities, i'll know better where to spend my money without being disappointed and get the best bang for my buck. Review of the restaurants may be subjective, but at least you know what's available in the neighborhood.

Summary: You must have this book if you go to Kauai
Review: We took this book with us to Kauai and we were not disappointed. This book specializes in giving you an insider's view of the island. It almost like hiring a tour guide to take you around during your trip. We used many of the useful ideas from the book. I tried the "Birds of Paradise" powered hanglider trip. It was a once in a lifetime experience that I would not have found without the book.
We also found great food including the best Hawaiian Shave Ice I have ever had. I really believe if we had not bought this book we would have missed over 1/2 of the great things we did on our vacation. This book covers the island to a depth that other guide books do not. I cannot give it 5 stars though because it is too popular. Many of the "secret places" recommended by the book were crowded because all the other tourists had this book in hand. That said....you really must read this book if you are going to Kauai!

Summary: The Title is True to form
Review: We just returned from a week vacation in Kauai and kept this book by our side the entire trip. It truly was the "ultimate guidebook." The book was easy to read (informative and funny) and was accurate on all accounts. We enjoyed visiting the spots "off the beaten path" such as the Kipu falls that the authors recommended. Future travellers should get the book several weeks before their trip and read it through. They make great recommendations for packing/preparing that we didn't get a chance to take advantage of prior to departing. The only recommendation I would make for future editions is to add more detailed maps for the hiking areas, especially in the ADVENTURES section. If this isn't possible, then the authors could suggest where the hikers can go to find the maps that will aid in navigation. The written text was helpful but better serves to supplement a map. (e.g. Secret Tunnel to the North Shore). Mahalo

Review: As first time visitors to Kauai, my husband and I used this book constantly. It was extremely helpful when taking road trips and offered insights to many areas we would have otherwise missed. Found the restaurant reviews were right on!!! Don't leave home without it, if you are considering a trip to Kauai.

Review: This is a FANTASTIC travel guide for Kaua'i. Just went in December '01, and this book was just perfect. The language is simple and brutally honest. This guide will help you to get the most out of Kaua'i. It is clearly written by people who KNOW this island. And I don't know what we would have done without the restaurant guide!! And the author maintains a website with all the latest info, so you will always have the LATEST info!!!
