Summary: Pratical Hands On Activity Guide - With Phone Numbers
Review: There are a number of travel books on Hawaii and many are fine books. I personally like the Eyewitness Travel Series - lots of clear bright photos. However most books such as that series try to cover all the islands in one 200 page book. In this book it is all about one island - Kauai. I have been to Kauai a number of times - as a tourist - and have used this guide, and enjoyed going up Mount Wai'ale'ale when it was not raining too hard.

This book is an excellent guide and has lots of details in 215 pages but all on one island with a nice index to cross reference information. It has places to stay, maps of towns, roads, trails, rental agencies, plantations, dining, kayak, jet skiing, helicopter info, boat rentals, hiking tips, swimming tips, and more. The photos are not great but they are good and give a basic idea.

Also it contains dollar rates for different things - such as the rentals - along with names and phone numbers to make reservations or rent gear or eat out or take a trip. So this book has a lot of practical stuff, just not maps and pictures.

A good general all round book for the island. You definitely need a copy for the travel bag.

Summary: Without a doubt, the BEST Kauai Guidebook
Review: We've taken five trips to Kauai since 1998, and have our sixth trip planned for next February/March. We have bought three different editions of this fabulous book, so we can keep up to date on our favorite island, even when we can't be there in person. It's highly readable, and the authors have a terrific sense of humor. I recommend this book over the Kauai Underground Guide by Lenore Horowitz. While Ms. Horowitz' book is ok, her writing style is much more stilted, in my opinion. Her constant use of !!!!! drives me batty.

I can also vouch for the authors of Ultimate Kauai Guidebook for being willing to help tourists. I emailed them a question about the island delicacy shave ice, and they answered me promptly!

In a nutshell, I'd say the Ultimate Kauai Guidebook is the one indispensable item you must have with you on a visit to the Garden Island. While you can purchase it there, it is very helpful to have ahead of time so you can anticipate the wonderful adventures and dining experiences that await you. And speaking of food, while I realize that everyone's tastes are different, my husband and I generally agree with the book's assessments of various dining establishments. We've found some true delicacies that I doubt we would have found without them, and I like to think we've probably managed to avoid a few duds as well.

Summary: Right On!
Review: The info is acurate. Food places rated ono are ono. So glad "the guide" clued us in to choosing Kipu Ranch Adventures for ATV ride--a real highlight. We've been going to Kauai for 25 years and still take the latest edition with us.

Summary: Best guidebook EVER
Review: I own two previous editions of this guidebook, have been to Kauai 4 times, and have found this book to be invaluable. I am planning a wedding on Kauai for April, 2004, and am once again using this book. I have yet to find any flaw with the information contained; I have been on many of the hikes and adventures in the book and have never been disappointed. If you are going to Kauai, don't even hesitate - BUY THIS BOOK and read and re-read it. I've read mine so many times I've lost count just because I enjoy the style and humor with which it is written, and I've also become quite obsessed with Kauai as well.

Summary: BUY this book
Review: When we went to Kauai for the first time we brought along this book. Every rental car in the hotel lot had this in their car and for good reason as it is truly great!

The only problem is now that it is so popular the secret areas in the book won't be so wonderfully secret.

Summary: Actually...can consider myself an expert on this one...
Review: Having been a frequent visitor to all of Oahu's neighbor islands, I never go without a copy of the "revealed" books in this series.

After all, I'm not a bruddah, only a mere haole, so even I need help getting around. Sometimes having a passing familiarity with local customs helps, but it won't help you find the real gems of the islands, whether it be those special hidden spots, the out of the way eateries, or even the bargains, this book is needed.

I find I agree with the authors most of the time, but I've had good experiences from operators when they've had bad experiences, and a few of their highly recommended just aren't up to par, so I take their recommendations with a grain of salt.

Summary: Don't leave home without it!
Review: My wife and I celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary here and by chance found this book the day before left to go to the island. It was an absolute godsend to have come across this book. It gives amazing details about how to find certain sites that no one would have any idea finding. For example finding the "monkey paw tree" after driving through an abandoned sugar cane field for three miles. The book is worth every penny!

Summary: Best guide book ever
Review: This book is EXCELLENT.
Easy to use, easy to read, easy to reference. Perfect maps. Perfect recommendations. I can honestly say, that this book did not steer us wrong one time our entire vacation. We did so many things and ate so many places that we never would have tried without this book. We loved our trip, and this book helped out tremendously. It was honest, and spot-on with every review.

Summary: We called it our "Blue Bible"
Review: While in Kaua'i for our honeymoon, we used this book to help us find everything -- beaches, hiking, helicopter tours, restaurants. It never let us down. We constantly refered to it as our "Blue Bible." The book is easy to use, with painstakingly detailed maps to hidden beaches and the best the island has to offer. We didn't use any other maps or guidebooks and found everything we wanted to do very easily.

Now that we're home, I'm using it as a reference guide to remember the names of the places we were. I plan on sending a warm thank-you to the authors, since our trip wouldn't have been as carefree without their book.
