Summary: Not the book for Ugly Americans
Review: In reading through the customer reviews on here, I notice that the handful of people who gave this book 1 star complain about the restaurant reviews, or they say the people of Kauai aren't really as friendly as this book claims. I'd suspect these are the people who expect paradise to be without bugs, rain, or or anything else that might "inconvenience" them... the people whom the reviewer from Kapahi complained about (11/12/00). If you act like a snotty haole, people will treat you like one. If you're looking for five-star restaurants, you probably SHOULDN'T go to Kauai. That said, this book is great for those of us who want to be unobtrusive, low-budget travelers and eat plate lunches with the locals. The maps -- which include 3-D relief shading -- are by far the best non-urban maps I've ever seen printed in a travel guide. My only complaint (and the reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5) is that the Accommodations section is all about hotels and condos; there are only 5 B&Bs and 2 Vacation Rental Referral Services mentioned, and I didn't find either of those services to be as helpful as I'd hoped. (For better accommodation info, check out alternative-hawaii.com.)

Summary: The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook
Review: We just returned from 3 weeks in Kauai and I cannot tell you how helpful this book was. I took along a stack of info.. AAA guide, other tour books, info off the net... after about 3 or 4 days I came to understand how accurately and honestly this book is written. If it's not a good deal, bad food, bad service, whatever.. it tells you. If it's good, you'll know.

An indespensible Gem.

Summary: The Ultimate Honeymoon
Review: I can't tell you how wonderfully this book enriched our honeymoon ...everything that was recommended was easy to find, follow, and all of the selected vendors were a perfect match. The entire series of these books are bibles for your travels in Hawaii...of all the locals I spoke to, they also chose these books. I just bought Maui Revealed and can't wait to use it as I've been there many times...hoping they will share some secrets I have yet to discover.

Summary: Excellent Travel Guide
Review: Recently went to Kauai and found this book to be the best of the best. If I were to bring only one travel guide with me, it would be this one. The authors really know the island.

Summary: a great travel guide
Review: I randomly picked up an earlier edition of this guide up before I went to Kauai for the first time. What a good buy! I now own the whole series of guides. In the end we left our copy with local friends, because they were still reading it, when we had to return from paradise. One caveat is that some of the food reviews from the 3rd edition are getting out of date (proprietors have changed, moved, or closed up shop), and the guide is so heavily used now you can expect to see folks in some of the more remote places with the "blue book". The hotel listings run to the expensive/resort side so if you're looking for cheap things or B&Bs you may want to buy an extra book.

Summary: ultimate guide to Kauai
Review: Well this book must be selling, because I live across the street from one of the secluded waterfall trails, and every obnoxious tourist on the island hops out of the car with it, walks up to my front door or just yells from the street, and then asks, "Is this the way to the waterfalls, can we use your telephone (hose, get a drink of water, etc)?" After a million questions and loud noises and tossed garbage from those who stop there, they decide to turn around in my driveway or drive on my plants. I think the writer of this book should mention a little something about respecting the residents of these places he's so proud to spread the word about.

Summary: Lives up to its name
Review: This really is one of the best guidebooks I've ever used. Very easy to use layout and the maps are beyond compare. It went everywhere with us on Kauai while the Lonely Planet sat on the coffee table back at the condo. One bit of advice, check with local surf shops concerning swimming and snorkeling conditions, even some of the so-called "safe" beaches can be dangerous at times.

Buy this book, you will not be dissapointed.

Summary: Don't go to Kauai without this book
Review: We spent one week in Kauai, and this book was with us the entire time. From the very accurate directions and descriptions of the best beaches and sights, to the extremely well written reviews of the restaurants, this book is a must. The maps are also excellent with both landmarks and mileage to show you where to go. A superb book. The authors also have an new excellent book for Maui.

Summary: Theres No Substitute
Review: To be honest, buy the Ultimate Kauai Guidebook and the only thing missing is a kauai hiking guide and detailed street maps of Lihue to find restaurants with confidence! This book makes a great gift for anyone going to Kauai.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: ABSOLUTELY INDISPENSIBLE - THE ONLY KAUAI GUIDEBOOK YOU NEED
Review: After spending 11 weeks in Kauai in less than four years, I can honestly say this is the one guidebook you will need - my original copy is falling apart at the seams from so much use. Details of how to get to different beaches, restaurant recommendations, recreational guides, and very detailed maps are absolutely indispensible. Had it not been for this book I wouldn't have ever known about the Grove Farm Museum which I have now visited twice - a highlight each time. I would have also not known about the condos we have stayed at twice -- oceanfront at $75/night! The only caveat is that it needs some updating, but the authors do update their web site with changes from what is in the book.
