Review: My wife and I just returned from Kauai on 5/30/01 and had a great time, much of that due to this book. The detailed directions to the hiking trails were amazing! Without these directions some of the hidden trails ("The Jungle Trail") we hiked would have been lost. The detail continued to all other aspects of the book helping us feel like seasoned veterans of the island rather than bumbling tourists. The reason for 4 stars VS 5 is due to some of the inaccurate restaurant ratings. I agree with another reviewer when they stated this probably couldn't be helped due to the constant changing of management. But in all fairness to the restaurants that have changed their ways for the better I would like to mention to the new readers to assess the establishment before shrugging it off. We found one in particular our last day in haste that the book frowned upon that was quite excellent. Overall....GREAT BOOK!

Review: The best travel advise always comes from friends. Within a few pages, the authors quickly become the best friends you ever needed to plan your trip. They offer clear and insightful information to help you plan all of your activities including where to eat and where to fill-up on gas. The detailed maps especially helped me to plan my days so as not to miss any photo opps and to maximize my time. (Not to mention the cultural lessons packed into the text that gave me a greater understanding and appreciation for what I experienced.) If you want to feel confident about fully enjoying your trip, this is the only book you need! A big thanks to the authors for sharing their Kaua'i with me!

Summary: This book is too popular...
Review: This book is excellent, but if you visit Kauai you will find that every tourist on the island owns this book.So, a lot of times you will read about a great destination in the book, and it will promise you that you will likely be almost the only one visiting the destination at a given time. Then, when you reach the destination, you'll find many other tourists with their copy of the guidebook in hand who were hoping to be the only one to visit this great kept secret spot.

Review: I've visited hawaii over 30 times in my life and this is a great resource if you're going to kauai. If you want Kauai to be like Beverly Hills, go to Beverly Hills. Kauai has it's own paradise magic and this book will lead you through there in style.

Summary: The Maps are great, but.....
Review: .....as a resident of Kauai I can attest to the fact that people here don't appreciate trespassers and that's my major beef with this guidebook. The authors seem to take delight in directing tourists to tromp across private property to gain access to hidden sites. This is irresponsible and it really irks the locals. The restaurant reviews are outdated and subjective; I usually don't agree with them but this is a tricky area due to constant change in management. The maps are really first rate, great detail, easy to read. Please be careful at places like Polihale and Queens Bath---way too many tourists have suffered serious injuries at these highly touted spots. (Kipu Falls, on private property is super dangerous.)

Summary: Excellent, well written, and the only one you will need
Review: I have been a long time resident of Hawaii and have spent considerable amounts of time on Kauai. This book is truthful and well written. The author's touch of humor and wit makes it not just an excellent guide book, but an entertaining one too. I have read a number of guide books for the islands and this one is by far the best.

Summary: This really is the ultimate
Review: I have used this guide book for two trips to Kauai, bought the first edition before my first trip, and bought the third edition while I was in Kauai in November 2000. This is such a great book. From the restaurant reviews to the not-to-be-missed sights, to the descriptions of the beaches, and everything in between, this is the only book you'll need on Kauai. If there's another edition the next time I go back, I'll buy it, too.
