Rating: Summary: Cutesy and flip Review: This was our first visit to Maui and we wanted to find sunshine and special places where there wouldn't be gangs of tourists. Before we left we outlined where we wanted to go using advice from this book. With the glut of reviews, way more than any other Maui guidebook, we thought it would be reliable. Maui was nothing like they described. The beaches listed were overcrowded and their vague directions left us asking locals which road to take. Needless to say, we were very displeased with our purchase.
Rating: Summary: A Must Have For Discovering Maui Review: My husband and I just returned from Maui and took this book everywhere we went. If you are adventurous, like to hike, and want to explore the island, this is the book for you. It gives information on how to find hiking trails, waterfalls, and locales that are not easy to find. Without this book, I would have never seen half the great things that I saw. This book is particularly good for the Road to Hana and for snorkeling locations (I loved the Fishbowl -- it's worth the 1/2 hour hike over lava rocks). The book also has good information on restaurants and hotels. The authors maintain a website with updates to the book that you can check before you leave. This book is indispensable. I highly, highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: This is the best book about Maui Review: This book gives you a lot of really useful information. One of the best parts is that they give you very good directions. For example, when they tell you to turn off of a main road, they give you the exact mile marker to turn at, or something like "turn right at the big white church." The one negative that I would mention is that I don't really agree with a lot of their food reviews. If you want to know a lot about Maui then this will be a good book for you. Incidently, the people who told me about it were my travel agents.
Rating: Summary: Great Guidebook for Families with Teens Review: Maui Revealed is an awesome book for families with older children. Our four kids ( 19,17,14 and 11) loved the adventures to find the "hidden treasures". Think your teenage son would never go for a day long drive to look at waterfalls and pretty views? (aka Hana Highway) Wait until you let him lead the way through a dark and dense bamboo forest, climb over a gate and barb wire fence or hop over a bridge, crawl down the embankment and wave to the "wimps" taking their pictures from the safety of the road! Many helpful hints about picture taking, great ( and not so great) eats, where to stay and places to avoid. If you are going to Maui and you want to see more than the typical tourist sights you must get this book!! BTW, heed the authors warning about the car window-smashing bandits....it happened to us at the Olivine Pools and the nice Maui police officer told us we were the fifth report he had taken that morning! We spend a day in Kauai with the authors' Kauai Revealed book and found it to be just as helpful. We only had 7 hours on that island and it really helped us to spend our time wisely. Thanks to the authors for helping our family make some wonderful memories that will last six lifetimes!!
Rating: Summary: Something new and better Review: The new Lonely Planet book for Maui just came out and it leaves Maui Revealed in the dust. To me it has a better tone, it's more upbeat, there are more listings and you learn alot more. Maui Revealed stayed in the glove compartment the entire time. For what we look for on vacation, it just didn't spark.
Rating: Summary: "The Book" for Maui Review: This book had everything: frank reviews on accommodations, restaurants, beaches, activities. We used it on a daily basis during our visit to the island and it saved us money and time. Excellent publication--we're ordering the other "Revealed" books for our next visit to the islands!
Rating: Summary: More helpful than a local guide. Review: This book was incredible. I spent 6 weeks on the island, got back this week :( Anyway this book really made my trip, it allowed me to have the information to decide what is and what isn't worth seeing. 99% of the time I agreed with their reviews. The book really covers everything on the island, beaches, activities (scuba, fishing, hiking, etc.), adventures, restaraunts, accomadations, and other random sights. Also it is logically catogorized by the parts of the island, so if you are looking for something around you, you only need to sift through the relevent information. This book truly is a must. I often contemplated trying to find these authors to personally congratulate them. The only bad thing about this book is it's popularity, so all those secret spots on the island that you get too may also have other people holding this book. This happened to me a few times, but I couldn't blame other tourists for buying this book, I think everyone going to Maui should. Another great aspect of this book is that it gives you real prices for all restaraunts and activities.
Rating: Summary: Use this book!! Review: This is the ONLY guide book to use if visiting Maui. Good, honest, up-to-date info on what to see and do written by people who actually live on Maui. It was our "Bible" for the week we spent on magnificant Maui.
Rating: Summary: Don't go to Maui without it! Review: By far the BEST guidebook there is. While Frommers and Fodors are nice, they don't BEGIN to scratch the surface of what this books truly "reveals". The authors will even email you if you have questions and appreciate updates and tips from their readers. No reason to buy any other guidebook, this is THE guidebook.Selfishly, I'm going to miss all of those "secret" places we enjoyed now being common to anyone who goes with this book on hand!
Rating: Summary: Excellent Guidebook Review: Just returned from a week in Maui and really enjoyed having this book as a guide to the island. I also had several other books like Fodor's, etc, but in my opinion this book is the best of the bunch. I have often wondered why guidebooks are of two varieties; either a drab sanitized book full of text and no color and pictures, or a book full of pictures with minimal written substance. This book seems to combine the best of both, authoritative in depth text based on the experiences of someone who lives on the island as well as nice color maps and pictures of notable sights. For the most part my experiences jived with the authors commentary. Some of my own observations. The most exclusive areas on the island are around Kapalua and Wialea. These areas are beautiful but they are also somewhat remote from the "action". If your idea of a good holiday is to stay on a resort than these areas are great, but if you want some local culture/flavor, good restaurants, shopping and nightlife, and proximity, than I would recommend staying in the Kaanapali area which has nice resorts and is also close to Lahaina, the town where all the action is. Using this book I visited some of what I thought were the most beautiful beaches on the island, Big Beach on the south side and black sand beach, red sand beach, Koki Beach and Hamoa beach near Hana. Enjoyed the drive to Hana, but unlike the author of this book I actually thought the beaches were more of a highlight than the waterfalls, which I didn't think were all that spectacular. Koki Beach and Hamoa Beach were incredible and the drive around Haneoo Rd. was breathtaking. If your going to Maui and want an informative book this is the best bet in my opinion.
