Rating: Summary: The world is so huge!! Review: It took the author 7 years of painstaking reaseach to finally present this ambitious book, and I must say she did a great job in giving us a broad yet detailed overview of the world. Reading this books makes me humble, knowing there is so much more out there to see, to experience, and a lifetime may not even be enough! This book provides excellent resources, it includes basic travel info, special events, and some personal choices of places to dine and to stay. It may not have as many varieties as a regular travel guide, but imagine, if the author is to list them all, this book will have compete in volume with the encyclopedia! I appreciate Ms. Schultz bring to life such an inspiring work that encourage us to explore our world, and to enrich our lives.
Rating: Summary: 1000 Places To See Before You Die Review: Fabulous book! Everyone I have given it to loves it!
Rating: Summary: Think before you enter into this Review: Before you purchase this book and stoke your own desire to leave your home behind and see the world, take a moment to reflect on what you desire out of travel. In "Self-Reliance," Emerson writes:"It is for want of self-culture that the superstition of Travelling, whose idols are Italy, England, Egypt, retains its fascination for all educated Americans.... He who travels to be amused, or to get somewhat which he does not carry, travels away from himself, and grows old even in youth among old things.... The rage of travelling is a symptom of a deeper unsoundness affecting the whole intellectual action." And then note the example of Descartes who travelled the world in his youth and later reflected (in his "Discourse on Method"): "When one takes too much time traveling, one becomes finally a stranger in one's own country; and when one is too curious about things that took place in past centuries, one ordinarily becomes ignorant of what is taking place in one's own country." So, before you burden yourself with 1,000 places to see in the world, consider if you really want this onus to be yours. Or, could the time, money, and effort expended in this vain, extravagant, and almost arbitrary undertaking be better applied nearer to your own place in the world?
Rating: Summary: I expected much more from this Review: I expected so much more from this book. What I wanted was a creative, fresh take on really unique, rarely-heard-of, unexpected destinations. What I got was a rundown that most of us could put together re: the obvious (and, yes, gorgeous) places to visit. You don't need this book if you want to know the most common, touristy places to go. Ipanema Beach? The Tuscan Hills? Come on! Huge disappointment here.
Rating: Summary: Fluffy but Fine Review: The book is interesting and enjoyable, with a few minor flaws. It has too much of the author's "hometown flavor" (manhattan). For example, the only "spiritual/holy" places listed in all of America and Canada are in Manhanttan, which is a little ridiculous: "Manhattan is the sprititual capital of America!" The other problem I have is the number of hotels listed. I might be the exception, but I don't consider commercial lodging establishments "musts". Maybe a few could make the cut, but I have seen some of the ones listed and they aren't that special. But to each his own: 1,000 is a big number and I won't begrudge the few dozen wasted (for me) on hotels. (The organization is a little strange - I think it is more than one "place" per geographic location entry...) Overall, it is interesting, if superfluous. It can help crystallize the type of trip you want to take, if not exactly where you want to go. In other words, a good bathroom book ;) or a good starting point.

An organization by country makes it easy to tailor a memorable trip around a given destination, while small black and white photos and clear overviews of attractions make for easy planning.
Rating: Summary: Are you kidding me? Review: As a native Missourian, I was officially offended that the ONLY great place mentioned in my home state(according to the author) was a (drumroll...please....)barbecue joint in Kansas City! Patricia, you clearly have not been around this beautiful state enough to know where the "places to go" actually are. Why didn't you just leave us out altogether? With all of our natural attractions, historic monuments, national and state parks, caves, museums, and countless other "secret treasures," it seems sad to me that a silly dining establishment was all you could come up with. Sorry, you lost this reader....
Rating: Summary: A Guide Book AND A Great Read! Review: 1000 Places to See Before You Die is a great travel book! I picked up this book to read about the sights in Paris, and didn't put it down until I had read all about Western Europe and more. The sights the author has selected sound like both reasonable and exotic places to visit. I can't wait to get started! This is well-written must-read for true travelers and those who just dream of jet setting around the world!
Rating: Summary: My Little Secret Review: At first I was a little disappointed that there was only 20 pages on Eastern Europe, as compared to 200 for Westen Europe. But then I thought I should thank Ms. Schultz for leaving out one of my favorite places, after all I'll have less crowds to contend with than in places like Italy to which she has dedicated 50 pages. I wonder what other places with rich culture, history, scenic beauty and diversity she has left out. How do you leave out a country with at least a half dozen UNESCO Heritage sites, which include the best preserved Roman Palace, and has 8 National Parks, 10 Natural Parks, and over 1,000 Islands with some of the best sailing in the world (Homer would attest to that, as would Shakespeare and Goerge Bernard Shaw who said "on the last day of Creation God wanted to crown his work, and thus created the Kornati Islands out of tears, stars and breath"). Oops!!! I just gave away my little secret. Thats O.K., were do you think all the Italians go when their beautiful country gets overtaken by turists? My advice to any one who buys this book, don't make it your traveling bible, you will miss out on some incredible places if you do.
