Just Leave Home Without the Author Review: I thought that the author did a good job of putting us all in the cockpit as they sail the world. However, while this book may recieve 5 stars from husband/wife teams who love to hear endless stories about the ups and downs that sailing can have on a relationship and on a persons mental health, for me it was more of a soap opera than a sailing book. While the mental aspects of both crew and captain should be heavily discussed in such a book, this one lacked any shread of detail about (1. the different cultures visited, 2. SAILING THE WORLD IN A CATAMARAN) My main objective was to hear about the plausibility of sailing the world in a Cat.. To be honest, I would have tossed the author overboard within the first 2 months of the trip.
Rating: ![1 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-1-0.gif) Summary: Not Worth The Read Review: I was anxious to read this book initially because it is one of the few (if not the only) books out there that follow the voyages of a catamaran around the world (as opposed to a monohull). Even though the title entices 'Around the World On A Catamaran" - the book itslef does not offer any information on the vessel and how voyaging on a cat differs from traditional monohulls. Aside from that disappointment, I had to wade through the drivel and whining of the author's fears and her bad marriage. I found her insights on the voyage not only poorly written and uninteresting - but sadly - it also encourges the negative stereotype of women as reluctant and inferior partners in the sailing dream. Untrue. I really feel this book offers nothing new to those seeking insights on traveling under sail around the world. And it reads more like a bad marriage consuling transcript in exotic locales. Skip it!

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Sailing narrative tells the real story of a couple at sea Review: Many people dream of sailing off into the sunset and think only of warm water and blue seas. Alayne Main tells us the real story of a couple starting out with no experience and learning the hard way that its not all sun and sand. They have to face the redefinition of their roles in their new relationship as skipper and mate. I liked as the book progresses through this, and into a phase where both Alayne and her husband are happy sailing, and begin to appreciate the world as a competent team! Many exotic and far-flung places are visited in this book. I feel I know much more about the Pacific and Indian Oceans and so many exciting locales. A good read for both armchair travellers and people who might someday consider sailing off into the sunset.
Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: How dreams translate into reality Review: This book shows you how the determination, the comitment, the patience and the good faith of two people made happen a dream that almost anyone had dreamed at least once in a lifetime. The critics may be right about the artistic value of this book, which is far from being outstanding, but nevertheless it is a delicious and healthy treat for and from a good, honest, hart. I am more enthousiastic about books describing reality in simple, common sense terms, than about artistic books with poisonous content, like we have too many arround these days!...
Rating: ![2 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-2-0.gif) Summary: Sailing Promise: Around the world on a catamaran Review: This book was a major disappointment, after reading the reviews and excerpts I waited anxiously for it to arrive (as we - my husband and I are looking into doing a similar adventure on a similar boat). I wanted to know how she as a woman handled her fears. Unfortunately she never did, infact it is page after page of whining. Pity her husband, who had to deal with both storms and a crying, sobbing hysterical wife at the same time! This book is a waste of time, money and paper. Now the book - Voyage of the Northern Magic was wonderful, the author of this book was a real trooper, brave smart and insightful. Forget Sailing Promise if you want an uplifting, inspirational book. It left me shaking my head and reaching for asprin.

I met Alayne at a sailing show recently and was searching for a book to read. Since I am a frugal person I tend to search a lot before purchasing. I made an exception here because of the intriquing combination of topics. There have been at least a thousand seminars and books on how to get a reluctant spouse to go live a life on a boat. There is obviously many couples that only have one person who really desires an adventure like this. This can be a strong enough desire to end relationships. Alayne Main, I feel meets this profile. She was excited about the dream, but scared to death of the reality. Everyone I have ever met like this usually gives up, sells a boat,or divorces. However, Alayne did the unexpected, she went! What inspiring strength! She shares her growing experience. She finds adventure, love, passion, and life, just around the corner from the sea of disaster. She shares about experiences that millions like her would miss. This is not a book about an experienced, born on a boat, person who set sails around the world. That would be dull and boring. Instead this is an inspiringly truthful account of someone who takes unexpected risks to find their true destiny. Combine this with the fact that it occurs on a catamaran, gives this book a fresh new perspective on sailing around the world. Alayne should not have gone, but she did! Thank you for the fine book. I could not put it down Daryl Ball, thisl2008@aol.com

Rating: ![1 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-1-0.gif) Summary: Man to woman,"I will marry you...you promise to sail world" Review: Written by the 28 year old physician/wife, this book is a repeat of the book "Come About". The only difference being no children here and 20 years younger. The focus is primarily on the insecurities, doubts, and perpetual fears of the author as they circumnavigate. It really pervades the circumnavigation and new places at some point. It becomes a task to read further. Danger and adventure are non existent. Makes for a good cover story on book jacket.
