Rating: Summary: Quick Cheap Getaway Review: A co-worker had used this book and lent it to us knowing we spend most of our vacations hiking, usually in Europe. This was our first time in the tropics. This book is written for hikers by hikers and contains all the information needed to acclimate, orient, stay healthy and take the right way. For us this was an important tool to have along. We are already planning our next trip to this special island that has already provided so many beautiful memories.
Rating: Summary: This Book Got Me Started Review: Even though I have owned a second home on Maui for many years, the Sprout's Maui Trailblazer helped me discover delightful places I didn't know existed, even in my own neighborhood. The authors' writing style is relaxed and humorous, in keeping with the Island experience. Even hard to find locations are described well and I particularly like the sensitivity shown by the authors to the land and to local residents. The hikes and activities included in the book are geared to a variety of audiences, taking into account all levels of physical fitness and interests. In fact, I keep a supply of Maui Trailbalzer on hand at our house for guests so they can explore Maui beyond what is offered in the typical tourist guide book. If you are looking for a thorough Maui guide book with many interesting options, and even inspiration to get out and about, whether for your first or your fifteenth visit, Maui Trailblazer is your best choice among a host of books available.
Rating: Summary: A fantastic book Review: Everything about this book was totally wonderful. We preplanned all our hikes weeks ahead of getting to Maui which ended up saving us so much time. On our previous visit we were snagged by activity salespeople who made us believe the only way to see Maui was by guided package tours $$$. This time we made a pact to see archeological ruins and areas of the island that were off the organized tour circuit. These authors have got it right when it comes to writing a guidebook for the unsedentary visitor. The Molokai ferry ride and drive around that they describe on pages 180 to 190 was worth the trip over alone. We spent an entire afternoon exploring the moody west side of Haleakala that hardly anyone goes to...Polipoli Springs State Park. Don't leave home without it.
Rating: Summary: strongly recommend Review: Expertly organized, expertly written with enough detail to keep you going for months. I like every book in the series. The one for Maui is particularly good as it explores many of the little known areas not listed in any of the standard guidebooks. It made touring around alot of fun and the practical advice it offered like knowing the rules of the road and getting to Hana in one piece made all the difference. Read it on the plane and you'll get off knowing exactly where to head. Here's a hint: Big Beach. You'll be in the swing like a local. Paradise found!
Rating: Summary: Maui - A moveable feast Review: For fistfuls of trails that are BELOW the radar and beaches that tourists never see because you have to walk there to find them, get this book. I didn't have one down day during the whole ten I was there. I go to Maui because it gets more sun. This guidebook dishes out the best private little corners that go unexplored by most people. Terrific maps and directions. I'm glad I bought it.
Rating: Summary: Most Useless trail guide EVER Review: I feel it is my duty as an avid hiker (and avid trail-guide user) to warn people about how thouroughly useless this book is. The language is so flowery that it is hard to read and the information is incomplete and hard to follow. Luckily my brother-in-law had a much better guide or we never would've found anything.
Rating: Summary: Best Guide Review: I put this guidebook to the test and it was a winner in every catagory: EXCELLENT maps, directions, hike choices, photographs, hidden away places, tips for staying out of danger. I never went anywhere without it. My wife called it our security blanket. Strongly recommended. Most accurate of all the guides we had along.
Rating: Summary: USEFUL Review: I was given the job of organizing the activities for our church youth group's annual meeting on Maui. This is the book that answered all my prep needs. I tested it out the week before everyone arrived and compiled two separate hiking itineraries, one for the rambunctious teens and another for the slower paced kids who had never been out on trails. The outings were a huge success. We circulated six copies and our wild bunch had a great time learning how to read maps and locate the trailheads. For hiking this title excels.
Rating: Summary: All the magic is in here Review: I was in Maui for twelve days and Maui Trailblazer was the best thing I could have ever purchased for my vacation. It was my first choice just thumbing through it at the bookstore and I have no regrets. It's best feature: it prioritizes what to see and chops the island into manageable pieces that I was able to bite off in a day (except for the Haleakala section that took two).
After my overview drive around, I went back to hike the choice trails that the authors put their Best Of stamp on. Even though I went solo I never felt alone. The swamp, in particular, was for me the most interesting hike (views + vegetation) I've ever been on. One you won't stumble upon unless you're guided there.
For snorkeling it contains a long list too. I just didn't have enough time for everything.
Rating: Summary: A Great Guide to Maui Review: Jerry and Janine Sprout's MAUI TRAILBLAZER does what the title promises. They show you the out-of-the-way treasures of Maui--fabulous trails and beaches, lagoons that invite kayaking and snorkeling, sapphire pools and tall cascades, surfers' coves, and the best ridges for watching whales. They plan trips by car to cultural sites and natural wonders. Both newcomers to Maui and veteran Islanders will find their advice clear and practical and their warnings about hazards and precautions helpful. This is a reader-friendly book that introduces people to magical parts of Maui that visitors rarely see. If you are going to Maui, or know someone who is, buy this book. You will not be disappointed.
