Summary: An excellent account of an Imperialist Adventure
Review: The English explorers of the early 20th century were equivalent to the the American space programs astronauts of the 1960's. The only difference is these Englishmen were undoubtably the men that made the molds for this type of man. This book is such a fast and gripping narrative that you will not put it down.

Summary: Endurance: Shackleton's Legendary Antartic Expedition
Review: I first read this book, and then I read Alfred Lansing's "Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage." I enjoyed the pictures in this book, but found Lansing's description of the journey more engaging. My recommendation is to read Lansing's book together with using the pictures and maps in this book to help visualize the writers' stories.

Summary: An incredible story of survival
Review: There have been a number of books published on Shacklton's ill fated voyage on the Endurance, but none of them had the breathtaking photos that author Caroline Alexander uses throughout her text. These stunning photographs bring life to the courageous crew of Endurance and give the reader a new found respect for those who braved the most wicked of elements during their ordeal. The story itself is a good one, so good that it can be read again and again. The author's careful weaving of the crew into the book gives the reader an opportuntiy to better understand those that made this journey possible. It is hard to imagine this book disappointing anyone.

Summary: Two Thumbs Up
Review: All 100 reviewers have all said the same thing, so I'll keep this short:

* The book is a must-buy if you like adventure

* Buy this new hardcover as opposed to the many previous paperbacks by other authors, the pictures are gorgeous

* I read it straight thru in about 5 hours; you can't put it down and you can be sure it will be a major movie someday

Summary: The Endurance
Review: An absolutely incredible book. It tells the story of the incredible ordeal suffered by Shackleton and his companions in the Antarctic. I was blown away by the way that these men survived under such primitive conditions and with such minimal eqipment. I wept when they had to shoot their animals including the endearing Mrs Chippy. I really felt for McNaish when this happened and could forgive him for his acts of mutiny. But if the story of their survival of the loss of the Endurance wasn't enough there was more! First the unbelievable journey across the roughest ocean in the world in an open longboat at the worst time of the year with minimal opportunity for navigation then the trek across the previously unexplored interior of South Georgia Island. Shackleton must have been an absolutely amazing man. The story is well written and the accompanying photographs by Frank Hurley just took my breath away. Given the equipment he had and the conditions under which he practiced his art, the reults are nothing less than extraordinary. Simply to have preserved so many exposures given the catastrophes they suffered is an incredible story of it's own. I would recommend this book to anyone whether they have an interest in the Antarctic or not.

Summary: endurance
Review: This book is a stunning combination of well-written and gripping narrative and black-and-white photographs which are a revelation. The strength of character and sheer determination of all involved is inspiring. Shackleton emerges as a real hero: psychologically and physically courageous, always thinking of the others. I am proud to teach in the school at which he was a boy and where the whaler,'James Caird,' remains as a source of inspiration to later generations of Dulwich schoolboys.

Summary: Incredible.
Review: This was an incredible story, the men on the endurance endured the unthinkable. It is amazing people lived to tell the tale. The book is a good, quick read simply because the story is great. The writer isn't the best, but the story makes up for it. If you liked Into Thin Air or the Perfect Storm, YOU WILL like this book.

Summary: Inspirational Story-Highly Recommended!
Review: They sure don't make many men like those that were aboard the Endurance nowadays, or at least I don't know of many. This rendition is an easy read that gives plenty of details without inundating the reader. You will know and appreciate the story after reading this book.

Those with a sense of history can appreciate the trials of these men. Those who have an inkling toward the dramatic may find inspiration. Caroline Alexander and Frank Hurley do a good job of bringing the story to life through a modern historical perspective.

Summary: Endurance : Non-stop amazement!
Review: Wow! This is a gripping tale of real-life adventure that is simply impossible to put down once you open the first page. I am astounded at the indefatigable feats of human fortitude these incredible men displayed. Once you read this real-life drama, you will never again complain that you are cold when your home thermostat is set too low. Try getting your clothes drenched in water and camp-out in your backyard in mid January for even one night in a pup tent. Imagine spending almost two years in worse conditions without the comfort of any refined shelter or adequate food in site. Read this book and put your own 'hardships' in perspective. Great book!
