Summary: Next best thing to actually walking across America
Review: I read this book in the early 80's and loved it. I saw it on my brohter-in-law's book shelf and asked to borrow it. It was every bit as enjoyable as the first time. I especially loved his relationship with his dog. Reading it again made me wonder what Peter was up to these days and how the Farm had survived in Tennessee. I learned a lot from reading this book.

Summary: This book is #1!!!
Review: This book is definitely a 5 star book. Anyone who is interested in travel, the United States, or enjoy adventure should read this book. It touches every known emotion, ranging from extreme happiness to the sadness felt from loss. I laughed, I cried, and most of all I was inspired. This man is an inspiration to me, and I highly recommend everyone read this book.

Summary: Favorite book of all time
Review: I first read this book in the early 80's and every night I would dream of what I just read, so I woke feeling like I was walking with Peter. I became so engrossed in his adventures that through his words, I shared his journey. That sense of adventure has stayed with me, and because of it, when I travel, I appreciate and enjoy my own journey much more fully. I am getting a copy for my husband, so he can read it and experience this amazing work himself and we can share it together.

Summary: Adventrous, Intriguing, Exciting; A great uplifting read
Review: The first of a series of "Walk/Adventure" books written by Peter Jenkins. He takes the reader to parts of the country that we all see on TV and dream of its existence but are too busy to visit. The reader will enjoy reading about the people that call these areas of the country home, and spend time living a small portion of their interesting lives with them. Great book, this is a keeper for my book collection that I will re-read again!

Summary: Finding my walk...
Review: When reading that initial page for the first time I knew my life would change with each passage. Jenkins' true story of "fully realistic life" was my call to self discovery. A wonderfully entertaining read, "A Walk Across America" provides one with hints of the warmth and nuturance our America offers. Jenkins simply did what the majority of us do not, he took the "first step" in the rest of his life. Anyone seeking to identify with this world and extract some quality meaning will undoubtedly be touched by the angelic Jenkins and his cherub in tow, Cooper. If you never read another book in your life be sure to read "A Walk Across America". Life, you may find, will take on a completely new meaning and purpose.

Summary: The kind of book you hate to put down and don't want to end
Review: When I read this book many years ago when it was first published, little did I know that it would be a part of the internet. I would encourage anyone who likes adventure and self-discovery to get a copy of this book. Peter (the author) and Cooper (his dog/pal) awakened me to the possibility of one day having a journey of my own. For now though, this fantastic tale has kept my zest for reaching out to people alive and well. Someday I too will make the trip. Thanks to the author Peter Jenkins. I think you will be inspired as well. Start with this story and continue with all of his other works. Your mind will be taken to new places with each page you turn. If you enjoy discovery, I also recommend a book titled "Blue Highways" by William Least-Heat Moon -- a travelogue of people and places.

Summary: Peter Jenkins' walk was an enlightening pilgrimage.
Review: Peter started his journey out of sheer frustration and discontent with his surrounding culture and society. He was fed up with the way things were, and this walk was his search for reality, for truth and authenticy in the world. Along the way he learns a great deal about survival and the people of America, but mostly about himself. His journey on foot was just part of the journey, you see. The inward spiritual journey that Peter took, resulting in him giving his life to Christ, is the true story of pilgrimage we find in this book.

Summary: For people who like true stories about human nature
Review: A Walk Across America is a different kind of story about a man and his dog in the 1970's. Peter Jenkins id fed up with America and is about ready to head to a foreign country when a friend tells him to take a closer look before he decides to abandon it. So Peter and his dog, Cooper, decide to walk across America. As they travel they meet many wonderful people along the way, with unique stories. There are a few, of course, who do not like them, like a small town who thinks Peter is a drug dealer trying to "grt" their kids. Most, though, like Peter and Cooper and some evern offer them places to stay. This is a true story , an overall good book. I liked hearing the interesting stories of the diierent people Peter me (he wrote the book). If you expecting to hear the whole tale, all the way to the Californian coast, though, you may disappointed, this book only goes about half way there. That's because Peter stopped to write this book. I think people who like interesting, true stories about human nature in general will like this book.

Summary: A journey with a new old friend.
Review: I finished rereading A Walk Across America again last year and it still makes me want to head out with the tent. It's still fresh. Although Jenkins writes that he is not an author, his work has that elusive, sought after quality most writers would kill for. Invitingly disarming while at the same time seductive. You are pulled in before you know it and sudddenly off on the journey of a lifetime with little more than a backpack, a wolf sized dog and guide you met only a few pages ago. None of which you mind because Peter is your new best friend.

Summary: Fantastic! Full of feeling! Couldn't put it down!
Review: The first time I saw this book I was a teen in High School, filled with adventure! Wanting to break out and go anywhere! I didn't get a chance to read it back then, but finally in 1993 I did-and am so glad too. Peter (and Barbara too) is one of my favorite authors. The book is filled with such emotion, and a true taste of what american lives were like then. I remember the 70's and they were different then now in the 90's. I had a hard time in putting the book down, just so I could get some sleep at night! It is an enjoyable book for anyone wanting to read of how we americans really are with eachother. It is not all bad. There were a lot of good folk that Peter came in contact with, and who is still in contact with even today! Very wonderful reading!
