Rating: Summary: Heinz Baked Beans and Very Sweet English Tea.. Review: I am such a huge fan of visual journals, and looking at the divine binding of this book, I figured it was another to find its place among my vast collection of distinctive gorgeous colourful journals.
However, I don't think that Danny Gregory's work is quite as good as similar pieces on the market. While it is has some wonderful drawings and some heartfelt ideas, there is not necessarily as much substance as you might find in other books.
I particularly loved the drawings and thoughts on Gregory's European trip, but to be honest, I found many of his observations to be very American, or at least American-centric. Considering he was raised in England and other parts of the world, this was a disaapointing shock.
Not only that, I thought many of his considerations had undertones of the privledged vastly cynical urbanite. While I did sympathise with his struggles, I imagine I would have liked the work more if this current did not exist and I felt like he actually embraced the purpose of his title. The often cycnical commentary and his greater ideals about quiet art just did not seem to correlate.
It was a lovely adventure into how partners deal with the debilitating inflictions of their loved ones, but I really prefer the calm kind journals of Dan Price, whose drawings Gregory is evidently also inspired by.
Rating: Summary: Slow down and savour this gem of a book. Review: I loved every moment I spent with this book, from the gorgeous cover to the heartfelt drawings and journal entries throughout. Well done, Danny Gregory. Not only can you draw, you have inspired another to do the same.
Rating: Summary: real life journal Review: I loved this book. I collect books on how to keep an art journal and this is the first one that unleashed my drawing and writing about everyday life. The other books are so polished and beautiful it made me feel like my drawings and writing weren't quite good enough. I love how he includes partial drawings because my sketchbook is full of partial drawings, they caught a glimpse of something so they are worthy of keeping. I also love how his writing can be a simple or funny thought that occurred to him during a drawing, rather than always something deep and profound. A beautiful book that will go on my very special favorites shelf to be read again and again.
Rating: Summary: Slow down and savour this gem of a book. Review: I really enjoyed reading this book. It was deep, thoughtful, warm and simple yet wise. It reminded me of Le Petit Prince. It is certainly true that we don't enjoy and appreciate life because we don't look at the beauty in front of us, and it is likewise certainly true that we are so focused on what we want that we don't appreciate what we get. I thought it was well worth spending the hour required to read this book to be reminded of these basic truths, because happiness is all in the mind.

Rating: Summary: A winner from so many perspectives Review: If you want to be inspired to draw, or to write, or to live more fully, or best of all to do all three simultaneously, (and if you only have 60 minutes to move closer to your goals)- Everyday Matters is a must read. It's real, charming, witty, whimsical, and teaches art and life lessons that can be applied BY ANYONE. For all those who say "but I can't draw" and even more for those who say "but what shall I draw" this has some answers to the first question and many to the second. It's hard for me to say whether Danny is a better artist, writer, or philosopher. Fortunately we get all three in this slim volume. I can't wait for his next book.

He tells his story with his own visual vocabualy. His personal daily experiences come to life thru his drawings. Gregory's great line quaility make Every Day matter's a pleasure to read as well as look at.

Rating: Summary: I loved this gem of a book-- Review: The drawings of everyday objects are delightful and lively, and the story that winds around the images is touching and uplifting. This is a book that I share with my high school students to show them ways that they can use drawing and journaling to help work through those curves and dips that life deals out to us.
