Summary: this was the best book I had ever read, at the age of 13
Review: When I first read this book at the age of 13, I was spellbound by it! It is still one of the best books I have ever read on the true nature of courage and comradeship under severely adverse conditions.

Summary: Riveting.
Review: The book changed my perspective on life. Not that i was previously pompous, that is hardly the case. I'm white trash! However, it makes you appreciate MONDAY'S. You'll appreciate gloomy days. You'll appreciate life.

Summary: very interesting
Review: While the events descriped sound almost impossible for humans to accomplish, I do have friends that returned from PW camps in Siberia in 1952and 54. and listening to them, I could believe his account. What cast some doubt in my mind is the ending. The END.

Summary: An outstanding book
Review: This is the incredible story of a man who escapes from a Soviet prison camp with six companions and walks 4,000 miles to freedom in India. It's an amazing, touching and awe inspiring account and a testament to human kindness and decency as well as an indictment of a horrible totalitarian regime. I think the odds against the author were incredible, but the book has the ring of truth.

Summary: Returns chills from my childhood
Review: Like one of the previous short reviews mentioned, my father handed me this book when I was about 13 and except for "The Black Panther of Sivanpalie (sic)" he also rarely suggested books for my young mind. I was transfixed for days reading and imagining myself with these escapees as they crossed out of the cold of Siberia, the Himalayas, the Gobi dessert, and to the sea while avoiding capture, tigers, and the weather.

I was reminded of The Long Walk while reading Cold Mountain and again today from Amazon.com's web page showing Cold Mountain's paperback version. I typed in The Long Walk and was amazed that it showed at all, let alone a new edition. I'll order it immediately.

I wish my two sons were still young and living at home so I could share it to them. I'll save this one for my grandchildren.

Summary: GRIPPING TRUE STORY OF DETERMINATION AGAINST THE ODDS.
Review: THE POWERFULLY FRANK WAY IN WHICH THIS STORY IS WRITTEN AND PORTRAYED TO THE READER DOES NOT JUSTIFY A MERE REVIEW. IT IS A BOOK THAT HAS TO BE READ TO BE ABLE TO SCRATCH AT THE SURFACE OF THE EXPERIENCE OF THE AUTHOR. IT WAS ONE OF THE FIRST BOOKS I EVER READ 30 YEARS AGO AND IT HAS BEEN A PRIVILEDGE TO BE ABLE TO READ IT AGAIN, THIS TIME AS AN ADULT. IF YOU READ THIS BOOK, QUITE SIMPLY IT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE. THE INHUMANITY OF MAN TO MAN, THE POWERFUL FORCES WHICH DRIVE MEN TO FIGHT AGAINST THE ODDS WHILE THE WILL TO SURVIVE EXISTS ARE WHAT THIS BOOK IS ABOUT. IF IT WERE FICTION IT WOULD BE FAR FETCHED. A HUMBLING EXPERIENCE TO READ. SAD TO THINK OF THE HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF STORIES THAT COULD NOT BE TOLD.....HERE IS ONE THAT GOT OUT!!!!!! I WISH I COULD THANK SLAVOMIR WARICZ FOR WRITING THIS BOOK.

Summary: My favorite book of all time
Review: I first read this book in the 60's, when my father handed it to me saying, "You should read this". He had never (and has never since) done this. It was long out of print, but since the 60's, I have reread the book several times - scouting out old copies in used bookstores. At one time I owned 2 copies - one for lending, one for myself. I am thrilled to see this monument to the resiliancy of the human spirit back in print.

Summary: The Facts may be a bit skewed but it's still a great story
Review: I must admit to raising my eyebrows at some parts of this story. The crossing of the Gobi desert with no water for days on days seems to challenge some of basic human physiologic traits. There are other instances where I had also some dis-belief in the claims made.

However, It's still a great story. The description of the encarceration and the transport to the POW camp seem quite vivid and I wouldn't ever want to go through it.

Rawicz is quite good at telling his story and I came away with the flavor of not only the hardships the suffered but a farily clear idea of the other characters.

This is definitely one to put onto the summer reading lists.

Summary: Non-fiction or Fiction??
Review: Who cares - this is a great read. If it is, as advertised, non-fiction then "The Long Walk" is a very enjoyable retelling of a harrowing, heartbreaking, and for some, deadly quest for freedom. If it is fiction, it does not lose any of its power over me as an outstanding and very readable work.

Summary: A monument to the human spirit.
Review: With all the continued emphasis on the "Holocaust" it is sometimes forgotten how ruthless and cruel Stalinist Russia was. "The Long Walk" vividly portrays the sufferings of a victim of Stalin's insanity but also gives us a rare look at an individual who's love of freedom overcame the evil of the Gulag system. This book is gripping, touching, intense, and unforgettable. I've read many books in my life. This book ranks in the top five, no question. Why no one has made a movie about this Homeric quest for freedom is beyond me! If you haven't read "The Long Walk", read it! You won't regret it for one minute.
