Summary: total lies
Review: What kind of fool does he take us for? He did not describe how the party traveled through thousands of miles without being challenged by the police? Through thousands of miles without being on trails? without food? without water or means to carry water? I'm only half way through the book and it is insulting to me that he calls this story "true." I can't wait to get to the "yedi" account and climbing over the Himalayas with a few more peanuts as nurishment. What a joke!

Summary: Film Rights Bought?
Review: According to scriptsales.com, the rights were bought by Warner Bros. sometime in Sept/Nov of '97. I've always pictured a foriegn director handling this material.[ Recently, Pavel Chukhraj (The Thief) came to mind] The idea of a pretty Hollywood star spearheading a project involving one of my most beloved books makes me shudder. I'd rather the script collect dust somewhere. Thankfully, from the looks of it, it is.

Summary: something from this book has stayed with me all my life
Review: i first came across this book over 20 years ago, as the section on seeing the yetis was used in an examination at my school, shortly after i came across a readers digest copy on my fathers bookshelf and devoured it in 2 sittings. this is an incredible story of strength and courage, all the more so because it is true. 6 months ago i got hold of another copy of this great adventure and agaian i was transported to the harsh and un real world of the gulag and of hunger and blistered feet. this is one book that all should read, keep in the family and revel in their success.

Summary: First read this book in 1959. It has stayed in my memory.
Review: I first read this book in 1959. It is one book I have never forgotten. Words such as courage, tenacity, tenderness, persistence don't quite explain the theme of the book. Rawicz has helped us to understand the human spirit and how one can overcome and succeed.

Summary: Riveted to our Cassette Player!
Review: A friend recommended "The Long Walk". My local library was not able to locate the book, but did have an 8-tape set, excellently read by Bernard Mayes. Mayes' precise, dispassionate (non-dramatic) reading perfectly suited the material. My wife and I were GLUED to the cassette player until all eight tapes were heard. Slavomir Rawicz' true story is nevertheless numbing in its scope. Slavomir Rawicz -- and all others who have suffered and survived the horrors of the Gulag (and who have revisited their nightmare to write about it) deserve our rapt attention and admiration.

Summary: This book opens your soul to these eight people.
Review: Don't take this wrong, but after three heart pounding nights, I never wanted this book to end! Of course I wanted them to get to India, but I enjoyed this book so much, I started getting sad that I had fewer & fewer pages to read! -and I had every emotion reading it too. I'll never forget his story. It will be locked into my memory, for me to cherish and learn from, till the day I die. I could read his words every night, but now I've just finished the book, and feel so sad that there is no more "Long Walk" to read every night. That's when you know you've just finished a GREAT book! Thank you very much Slav!

Summary: A stunning tale of human courage
Review: I read this book as a teenager while in high school and I must say I have never to this day read a book more compelling and more motivating than this book. This book is by far the best book I have ever read and I highly recommend it to anyone, it displays the true meaning of the human spirit and the words 'never give up'

Summary: One of the most inspirational books you will ever read!
Review: I highly recommend this unforgettable book. Its a story that contrasts man's terrible cruelty with his capacity for profound acts of compassion, strength, faith, and will to live. It is written in a straight forward manner that contributes to its authenticity and brings into focus the extremes of the human condition. I've never insisted my friends read a book before. I wanted them to be as moved as I was but I also wanted to re-experience that sense of awe when they say, "That is amazing."

Summary: A must for anyone with doubts about the human spirit
Review: A superbly written book by a truly remarkable man. This tells of the exetremes that man can endure in order to reach the ultimate goal of freedom. It is an inspirational text but is in no way pretentious. It reports all that happened in a forthright manner and the reader is left astounded as to the trials that the men endured.

Summary: A very humbling read!
Review: After reading many of the reviews I am inclined to go with my original feelings of empathy for the trekkers. In hindsight, it is a tad unbelievable that a prison commandant's wife would help these men escape, but as one reviewer noted, truth is indeed stranger than fiction. The desire for freedom is a force that cannot be underestimated unless you are faced with having it being taken away. I believe that if you are faced with this choice most people would rather die than have it taken away because by not attempting escape you are in essence dead already. I too, read this book more than 30 years ago and mentioned it to my son who not only sought it out but bought me a copy which I still read from time to time to keep things in perspective. It is a good read for anyone.
