Summary: The saga continues!! Excellent!
Review: Frankly I am a bit surprised at the reviews that are less than stellar. Gabaldon has done yet another wonderful job in her latest book...I love all the details and word choice she uses to describe the scenes and so what if a single day took a couple of pages, it gives you a true feel for the day in the life of a settler in the new America. The fact that she chooses so many different styles of writing is what makes her Gabaldon. I savored every word and cannot wait for all the other installments...but please hurry, Diana! (And of course we will be waiting with BATED breath!)

Summary: Outstanding writing and just fun to read
Review: As with all her books, this one has an exciting scene! They were dealing with a bear rather than the pirates, but my heart was in my throat again. Galbaldon writes so well; her characters are very well developed. This series, starting with THE OUTLANDER, has given everyone in my family hours of enjoyment. Bravo!

Summary: Waiting for the next...
Review: Well I have finally gotten around to this installment of the Jamie/Claire Fraser saga. Ms. Gabaldon is beginning to rival Steven King in her ability to describe EVERY detail...The first 100 pages or so describe 1 DAY! The entire book serves to solidify the position for the sixth (and promised final)installment in this marvelous series. I would not recommend starting with this installment. Go back to OUTLANDER and start from the beginning. But all the books are worth the read. (and I do not work for any bookseller!!)

Summary: Brianna's Breasts, enough already!
Review: I am an avid fan of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series and could not wait to dive into The Fiery Cross and revisit with Jamie and Claire. Unfortunately, this book was a huge disappointment. Roger and Brianna take a fair chunk of the novel, Roger's story is interesting but I can't say that I'm able to warm up to the short tempered and often self centered Brianna. Is there any more to her character or personality than her temper? I don't feel a real sense of personality from her. Her character spends so much time in a fit over one thing or another and even Roger often appears to be afraid of her.

Brianna's leaking breasts and the state of Jemmy's diapers are described ad nausem in this book. We get it already, her breasts leak. What was the author thinking? I realize this is realistic for a nursing mother but is it necessary for the reader to read about it in detail quite so much? How does it move the story forward or advance the plot in any way? Or even contribute to her character? The book in general? I think the author could have shaved about 200 pages out of this book by getting rid of the worthless, repetitive descriptions.

I hope the next one is better but I'm sorry to say that this one is very slow moving and frankly, boring.

Summary: So... very....long....
Review: I read this book as soon as I could, after it was released. I was deeply in love with the prior four volumes in the series, and I couldn't wait to find out what would happened in the fifth.

I'll tell you what happened in the fifth: Nothing. Or, at least, very, very little. It dragged on for chapters about the most trifling things. And it was mind-numbingly long, without any action or excitement to justify plodding through so many pages.

If you're a die-hard fan of Jamie and Claire, read it. If you're just getting into Gabaldon, stick with Dragonfly in Amber.

Summary: Wonderful, as usual.....
Review: The most telling comment from the nay-sayers was that there is no action/romance. What I take this to mean is that there is no tearing separations and no heightened sense of waiting for the reunion and not enough blood and guts. However, Gabaldon's writing is not only superb, but is ever more literary. The Fiery Cross may be her best book yet -- and I don't care overmuch for the American Frontier. Nonetheless, I continue to be delighted with her careful research and, for heaven's sake, the STORIES are delightful, the characters and chacterizations are marvelous. I don't see how anyone can put this book down with any ease. Someone suggested a couple of other books INSTEAD of the Fiery Cross, neither of which can hold a candle to Gabaldon's, however much I liked them. When a writer keeps books in a series coming, people tend to turn off, their expectations having been raised to heights that probably no one could satisfy. And knowing that the next book isn't just around the corner, I have only now read the fifth one. Since I've read the first three twice, I can always read the fourth again. I am a Big Reader and used to be more eclectic, but now I love to sink into Great Big Reads and Diana Gabaldon satifies me completely.

Summary: You will be dissappointed!
Review: If you are hoping to find the romance and adventure that the first four books contain then you will not like this book.I eagerly anticipated this book even reading excerpts on the web site. The finished product makes me wonder what the wait was for exactly.Instead of adding more characters and extending the series it would have been more satisfying to get to know exsisting characters better and have all of those pesky unanswered questions solved.
Overall this book is BORING !!! Very unlike Diana !

Summary: Misses the Mark
Review: Please don't get me wrong; I LOVED the first and second books in the Outlander series, but I think they have gotten progressively worse and The Fiery Cross is not a good book. It is agonizingly detailed without any purpose. I really don't need 4 1/2 pages on a stinky diaper.

Countless new characters are introduced without any direction or reason. None of them enhance the story or advance the plot....is there a plot? I felt like this was 1,000 pages of set up for the final book. Jamie does still have his adorable moments that remind us why we love him so much. But I would think Claire would have outgrown her tantrums and moments of ridiculous naivety. Roger and Brianna continue to be bland and boring. In fact, that is how I would sum up the entire book, boring. All fans will read it anyway, but don't expect too much.

Summary: Save your money
Review: Books 1-4 were great and I read them in miracle time. However, the fifth one, I can not make myself finish it. It took a week to read each of the other books and it has been 3 months on this last one, I have no interest in the characters boring lives anymore. No action at all or romance.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Disappointing
Review: I've come to expect so much from Gabaldon. She is such a gifted, smart, witty writer. This book was such a letdown to me. Had I not been emotionally invested in the characters prior to reading it, I imagine I would have thought the book was a complete snooze. As it was it was only half a snooze. :)

I do hope that Gabaldon doesn't let her editors or fans pressure her to complete the next book before its time. I'd much rather let her take her time to craft a great story than release a book that doesn't advance the story any simply because her editors, or fans, think it's time.
