Rating: Summary: The Best of the Best... Review: There are scores of reviews for Diana Gabaldon's excellent series of novels involving Jamie & Claire. Read them and let your mind go with the flow - you'll never want to surface again. The only way I can emphasise this is to say that I have lent my copies to everyone I know who can read!!! and then I feel jealous that someone else has got them. I especially want to keep Jamie all to myself...
Rating: Summary: This Ain't Your Old Ordinary Romance Novel Review: When I was a little girl, I remember sitting in the back seat of our station wagon while watching my mother sitting in the front passenger seat reading one of her romance novels. I always asked her whether she was reading a good book, to which she almost always replied, "it's alright . . . but it's pretty much like all the others." I always wondered why she bothered . . . after all it seemed like a horrible waste of time. When I was older, however, I found that what she said was basically true . . . romance novels are pretty much just the same book but with different covers and characters with different names. But, after reading Ms. Gabaldon's work, I believe that a new trend in romantic literature has arisen. The only book that I like better in this genre is "Gone with the Wind" for one simple reason . . . with Scarlett I knew what motivated her while with Claire I wasn't quite sure what she was about. Since, for the most part, she wasn't very interesting, I never really cared about her (I didn't want her to die, I just wanted her to be more exciting and three dimensional). On the other hand, I really liked how the character of Jamie was set up for development. As a reader, I saw constant and detailed instances of how and why he was the man he was in the story e.g. very specific and detailed flash-backs in his life. I also say "Bravo" to a wonderfully complex villian in Randall. He was not merely a storybook cliche. I was left wondering how he grew into the cruel man he became and what exactly was his relationship with his brother Alex? I also loved to hate Dougal -- he was a hoot! I didn't know if I wanted to have him slapped, shot, kissed or spanked, but I do know that I would have volunteered for any of the four. I really enjoyed Geillis too. I thought the part where Claire sees the small-pox vaccination when Geillis sacrafices herself was really quite memorable. I would recommend this book to people who enjoy history, romance, or just plain old escapis! m. It is a wonderful story.
Rating: Summary: Not just another romance series Review: I am NOT a romance fan, but these books transcend the romance genre. I agree, that not since Gone with the Wind, have I been so captivated by a love story. Scotland and it's inhabitants became real - the attention to historical detail made the story come to life. If you read Outlander (and the rest) - don't assume you can put it down, and don't expect to sleep until the book is done. And even then.... the characters will stay with you.
Rating: Summary: Simply Great Review: I've read this series from the beginning. I got a friend hooked on it. The strangest thing is He is related to the Fraser Clan! His roots are traced back to Simon Fraser, Jamie's father. It's a very pleasant surprise to have an author get the actual facts of an entire family. Way to go Diana! You are a fabulous researcher! What you don't know about Scottish History hasn't been written! That, along with the characters in the "Outlander" series makes this a must read for romance, sci-fi, and history lovers!
Rating: Summary: An astonishing book that has moved me beyond comprehension! Review: I have read more books than I can count...There are only a few novels that I consider "the Best"...then came Outlander! Totally blew all competition out of the water!! I have told all my friends about this book (even bought audio version for Hubby) and everyone has thanked me profusely. My best friend and I get into the most intense discussions in the books...Even to the point of picking out famous actors and actresses who could play the parts should it ever be made into a movie!(we have all the secondary characters chosen, but we cannot decide who would play Jamie and Claire! Nobody can come close to filling theirs shoes!) Bless the day I came upon this book!
Rating: Summary: Best Book I Have Ever Read !!! Review: My Mother got this book for me because I was sick and couldn't really do anything but read. I thought It was just going to be a long boring book , boy was in for a surprise ! This book had so much emotion in it that made me cry and laugh (laugh too much )This book was better than most romances because it was more real .Outlander in end didn't end with everything "Peachy-Keen" Jamie gets hurt mentally ,but in the end Claire helps him thourgh his problem .I think it was also neat that Claire was older by at least 5 years , cause in most romances the guy is almost twice the age of the heroine(cradle robbing) .Read this book listening to celtic music and you could almost be in heaven .
Rating: Summary: Fascinating blend of Now and Then! Review: A real page turner... I love the theme of modern woman in 1700's Scotland. Thank goodness there are MORE!
Rating: Summary: Extaordinary Review: I can't begin to explain the effect that this book and it's successors have had on me. I feel that the main characters, Claire and Jamie, are more than just people in a story, words on a page. I have re-read the series several times and anxiously await the last two(?) books in this particular series. I find myself thinking about Claire and Jamie and re-living their tumultuous past and wondering what the future will bring them. I love the historical references, the Scots theme, the great love story, the piquant scenes between these unforgetable people. I admired the strength of them both, though they were each strong in their own ways. Standing up for what they believed was right. And always, always, the great love..........It is my fervent hope that Ms. Gabaldon will hurry and satisfy my craving for more of this incredible story. Long live Jamie and Claire!
Rating: Summary: At the risk of sounding completely inane... Review: ..when I finished the first book, I felt as if a group of close friends had left town and I knew I wouldn't enjoy their company again. Then I found that there were MORE stories, and couldn't wait to find them to read -- it was like re-visiting a favorite place. Another narrative review of these books isn't necessary - just read all the comments that came before and you can't miss the premise - but it's lovely and comfortable to read about a woman [past the first heavy-breathing blush of youth] who is still a functioning, resourceful person (like some of us, perhaps?). Good Grief! I'm doing it, too - there really IS a feeling that Claire's more than just fiction. When's the next book due on the shelves?
Rating: Summary: Loved every page!!! Sexy, romantic, and full of history! Review: I couldn't put the book down! It really was a get away from the real world! Claire is the best heroine since Jane Austens Lizzie in Pride and Prejudice. And where can I get a Jamie Fraser for myself? The two of them left me breathless, and eager for the next books!!!
