Summary: Enjoyed every second of it!
Review: I was recommended this book in several book groups last year. This book was just as good as I had hoped it would be.

We follow the journey of Clare, a 20th century nurse that accidentally time travels to 18th century Scotland. Once she gets there, she meets with adventure after adventure with an outlaw named Jamie that she meets by accident. There is a little something for everyone in this book, from romance, to intrigue, to horror - you name it, the book has it! I was hooked the entire time I was reading the novel, and would recommend it to anyone. I really look forward to reading the others in the series.

Summary: Way toooo long
Review: I was eager to read this novel as many of my friends raved about this story. Unfortunately this novel didn't live up to my expectations. It read very slow in some areas, and some of the content was unbelieveable. I couldn't believe that Clair, portrayed by the author as this strong independent woman, would put up with as much as she did. She made time travel seem like a breeze. I didn't believe her character, or Jamie's virginity, was very credible. I finished the book, hoping the story would pick up, but was left frustrated and empty. The history was interesting, but not enough for me to recommend this book or read further about these characters. Do something better with your time.

Summary: Historical Fiction Perfection with a Time Travel Twist
Review: What can I say about Gabaldon's "Outlander" that hasn't been said a thousand times? I have read other time travel books that come off as quite cheesy, but Gabaldon pulls it off brilliantly. Set in the Scottish Highlands in the 1740's Outlander reaches out and pulls readers into the intertwined destinies of Claire Randall and Jamie Fraser. Claire, a married nurse, walks through a ring of standing stones only to leave the present 1945 and emerge in the early 1740's. Through a series of adventures, she eventually meets a wounded Jamie Fraser. Claire tends to his injuries, thus starting them on the path that more or less clashes them together throughout the rest of the story. In an effort to thwart the villainous Black Jack Randall, Claire and Jamie wed. Although Claire tries to fight her feelings for Jamie, she eventually admits to herself that she has fallen in love with him. There is so much action, humor, romance, and betrayal packed into this first tome in a series of currently five books, it is impossible for readers to not be instantly snared. Having read Outlander, I plowed through the other books because I could not stand to find out what becomes of Claire and Jamie. They simply consumed me.

Told from the first person view of Claire, Outlander is an amazing book. Her modern day views and opinions are often at odds with Jamie's old-fashioned, chivalrous morals. The historic detail is exceptional with the fictional characters interacting with real-life historic figures smoothly and believably. The dialogue is fantastic and often very funny, especially between Jamie and Claire. The plot unfolds magnificently, propelling readers to the final pages. This book is a must read by anyone breathing! I have not met anyone who has read the Outlander Series who has not raved over it. Do yourself the favor!

Summary: WOW
Review: I wasn't sure what to expect when I first started reading this series, but all I can say is "WOW!" Reading of Jaime & Claire is like reading about close friends. These characters will become part of your own life as you read. You'll find yourself rooting for good to prevail and saddened when pitfalls arise.
More than anything, you'll wish you were there with them to experience what they do. I'd walk through the stones in a heartbeat!

Summary: Six stars (at least.)
Review: This is an amazing book. Ms. Gabaldon makes the characters and situations so real that you completely empathize with them, and often become so lost in the book that you feel as if it is happening to YOU. This makes for a very powerful, sometimes very stressful read......and when it's over, you will feel as if these characters were/are living historical people, not just "characters." Do not make the mistake of passing the Outlander books off as "romance" novels; although the earlier editions had some slightly cheesy cover art, these books are meticulously researched with much love and devotion by their author. You will learn about history, folklore, medicine, and many other subjects while escaping into this fascinating world.

Summary: the best romance novel
Review: I love historical romance and this is the best I've ever read. You'll want to travel to Scotland after reading this book, I guarantee it. The story of Jaimie, the Scottish highlander of the 1700s, and Claire, the nurse who accidently travels back in time from the 1940s, is unforgetable. One of my favorite books ever.

Summary: THE BEST LOVE STORY
Review: MY SISTER IN LAW sent it to me i am so glad she did.

I just loved it it kept me riveted. The love between Jamie and Claire is so deep reaching over 2 hundred years. When Jamie took Claire to the circle of stones I nearly lost it. She was torn between her husband in 1945 and the love she felt for Jamie but that won out I was so happy for her it would be a very hard decision to make I am glad she made it not me.

Summary: Did I miss something?
Review: This book takes place in 1945 and is based around Claire Randall, a combat nurse who has recently returned from the war. The story starts out with Claire and her husband, Frank, visiting Scotland in an attempt to rekindle their marriage, where most of their time has been spent apart.
Claire finds herself catapulted back to 1743, Scotland where she meets and marries James Fraser, a young Scot clansman, whose relationship with his Clan MacKenzie Uncles is riddled with mystery.

Her adventure in time starts out by running into her future nemesis, Captain Jonathan Randall, who amusingly looks just like her husband she has left behind in the 1945 Scotland. She is quickly rescued by the Clan MacKenzie. The story begins well but quickly falters from here on.

To escape the hands of Captain Jonathan Randall, Claire must marry Jamie. Initially you can believe these two characters might fall in love until Jamie Fraser beats Claire for not obeying him. Claire, having left one husband in the future, does not hesitate to enter into this other marriage with Fraser. The unbelievable acceptance of her fate is a major flaw in this time travel story.

The story is slow moving and the plot develops in a predictable way.

If you are looking for a Scottish adventure with sword play and romance, I do not recommend this book.

Summary: Outlander
Review: This is a must read for anyone who likes strong characters and a plot that keeps you turning the pages, well into the dead of night!! I admit, I was disappointed to discover that this book is in the romance section - but it is far from the light weight, no plot, woman-finds-love-after-being-hurt, story of a typical romance. Do not let the length put you off; you will not be able to put this book down.

Gabaldon, a Ph.D, has superb research skills and the historical value of this book should not be discounted. If you are a lover of history and like to see lots of interesting historical details this book is for you. I keep an extra copy around just to lend out. This book is so good I feel it is a community service to introduce other readers to the charm of a Gabaldon novel!

Summary: One of My Favorite Books
Review: I read this book a few years ago when a co-worker suggested I read it. I wrinkled my nose after I read the cover of the book - time traveling and historical romance are not my thing. Once I got started on this book I couldn't stop. It was not like any other book I had read. I even had my husband furiously reading it and he is a sci-fi only reader. It was very dramatic, but there were some comedic moments to keep things light. This is the best book in the series. The books get worse and more unbelievable as you go through the series. This is a great book for a book club.
