Rating: Summary: Have never read a more touching, romantic story . Review: I ran across the paperback version of Outlander in the summer of 1996 by accident.I was looking for something to read while on vacation. I thought the cover sounded interesting so I got it.Today after reading all the books from the Outlander series at least twice and telling everyone I know about them I actually feel fortunate that I ran out of reading material that summer and met Jamie and Claire. I'm waiting patiently for the next one. Please hurry Diana
Rating: Summary: Viva Outlander!! Review: I LOVE THIS BOOK!! The way Diana Gabaldon mixes mystery with romance and historical fiction is enchanting. This 850-page book I read in four days!! I couldn't put it down!
Rating: Summary: Compelling, I could not put it down! Review: I am new to the genre of Romance. Having read THE WEDDING by Garwood, I have been trying to find another that swept me to another time. This book was unbelievable. I read till late at night, then set the alarm early so I could read some more! I loved the idea of travelling from this century to the seventeenth. I loved the pure masculine idealism of Jamie. Most other novels do not portray the hero as strong, without having strong dominant love scenes. Jamie was powerful, but so respectful. He was funny and tender. And, a man who is a virgin...what a concept! Claire was strong, with a sense of humor. She had unbelievable trials without ever seeming victimized. I loved when she was at the abbey and found God. This book made the other romance novels I had read seem like trash. This book was beautiful.
Rating: Summary: This is the best book in the universe Review: I absolutely loved reading the outlander series. I have read each book at least three times. Each time I read them they get better and better. I am anxiously awaiting the fifth book "The Fiery Cross". Ill be the first in line to buy it. Keep writing more Diana, Please!!!!!
Rating: Summary: One of the best series I've ever had the pleasure to read!! Review: I can't remember when I got so caught up in a book . After I read every single one of the books,I couldn't wait for the next one in the series to come out. I am really hoping there will be a fifth book in the series. We need to find out what happens to the baby. The last one in the series, The Voyager, was just as great as all the rest, but it didn't end the whole story line for me. It left me wanting more, so I have been watching the book stores with baited breath waiting for the next one to come out. PLEASE HURRY!!!!
Rating: Summary: An author like this comes along only once in a lifetime! Review: Never in my life have I ever been moved with so much emotion while reading a fiction story. Outlander and the other three books in this series so far, are stunning. This reading experience will repulse you, depress you, make you angry, make you laugh and make you feel sad to see it all end. Diana Gabaldon's writing style is terrific, her imagination remarkable and her storytelling unforgettable. These books definitely live up to the hype and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this saga.
Rating: Summary: These books are some of the best I have ever read. Review: The greatest praise I can give an author is that I become so engrossed in the story and the characters that I absolutely forget where I am. I hear nothing, see nothing. It's as though I become part of the story. This happened to me with each of these wonderfully written and exciting novels. I am now on the third one, Voyager, and can't wait to get the the last one. All I can say is I want more, more, more!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Whoops! Review: I meant, in my previous review, that's I'm a third of the way through Dragonfly in Amber, not Drums of Autumn! I guess I'm so excited to be reading this that I'm rushing it!
Rating: Summary: Totally Addicting Review: Although I don't read many Romance books, I thouroughly enjoyed Outlander. The characters are well developed, the story doesn't drag at all. It seems that there is something happening on every page. Some people didn't like the torture scenes all that much (Including me, they're disturbing!) but I do feel that that adds a bit of realism to a story that we all know is pure fantasy. I'm about a 1/3 of the way through Drums of Autumn and finding that equally good. If it's historical fiction you're looking for, yes, Outlander is historical but basically a time-travel romance story. I'm liking Drums of Autumn a bit more because it is more historical but not as action-packed. I recommend this book to anyone who's enjoyed sweeping historical sagas with a touch of romance and anyone who's liked some light fantasy type novels. The characters are well developed and I like that it's told in the first person. I've even dreamt about Jamie and Claire and know exactly what they'd look like. This is really a good story and should be an enjoyable (although quick, I stayed up to all hours to read this in a few days) read!
Rating: Summary: Violent scenes are not for squeamish Review: Yes, this was an excellent novel as you 311 reviewers have said. Hey, Jamie-lovers: get a grip--it's a story, not real life. Would that it were, minus the torture and violence! Gabaldon must have a real bunch of people researching for her, or else she has an impressive history doctorate from somewhere and no life other than writing these books. Great characters, etc. MY ONE RESERVATION: did she HAVE to make the violence and torture segments so incredibly violent? For readers with good imaginations, they were hard to take, enough to color the whole book as less than perfect. She has this story and the continuations, adding up to, what, 2500 plus pages? Even Margaret Mitchell did it well in a little over 1000. Does this story just pour out of Gabaldon or what? I have visions of this poor woman slaving maniacally over a word processor trying to type fast enough for the words that are coming out of her brain in such a torrent. Good heavens! I didn't read the remaining books because they are just such an expense in time. Usually, I find romances too short, but in this case they're a bit long and too violent. The one thing I hate about Michener is he starts back in the Pleistocene to tell a story about the 1850's. This isn't quite that bad, but I did stagger a bit in bleary-eyed relief as I placed it back on my bookshelf after finishing it. I just thought it was kind of funny when I read it that it was so long, and kind of a pain because of that. I'd still recommend them. Just be prepared--it will take awhile. My favorite romance writer is Judith McNaught, whose book, "Almost Heaven" has the best male character I've ever come across: Ian Thornton. And if I could find a "book world" to live in, it would be in the world of Rosamunde Pilcher's novels. They are like old friends: the slightly shabby and very human estate people, the old folks, the dogs, and every home always has a room for company, the reader!
