Rating: Summary: Interesting in spots, but with some serious problems Review: I read this book on a recommendation from a friend who told me that it was not a romance novel. I quickly found that statement to be inaccurate, but continued to read because I was intrigued by some aspects of the book and Jamie was a very appealing hero. Ultimately I found myself wishing that I had spent the time reading something else.I had two main problems with the book. First, I would have preferred less violence, especially violence associated with sex. I don't find rape or spousal abuse romantic. The second problem was that there were only 2 homosexual characters and they are both evil rapists. In one case it was stated straight out that the man was evil because he was gay. I found this unnecessary and really distasteful. I ceratinly won't be spending any of my limited free time reading the sequels.
Rating: Summary: I'VE NEVER READ A BETTER BOOK!!!! Review: THIS BOOK MADE ME CRY, AND MADE ME LAUGH OUTLOUD. I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN. I READ THE WHOLE SERIES MORE THAN ONCE, MY SISTER AND I RAN UP A VERY EXPENSIVE PHONE BILL DISCUSSING JAMIE, WHO HAPPENS TO BE THE ONLY MAN I WOULD EVER CONSIDER LEAVING MY HUSBAND FOR!!!! I CAN'T PUT INTO WORDS THE FEELINGS I HAVE FOR THIS SERIES, YOU JUST HAVE TO READ IT. I PROMISE YOU'LL LOVE IT TOO!!!!!
Rating: Summary: I'd time travel with Jamie any day! Review: When a friend recommended I read Outlander I hadn't read romance before. And as I was drawn into the story I realized that this was the first time I ever considerered STEALING a book from the library! (I didn't. But I DID check it out probably as many as 15 times, I liked it so much.) Then I did go out and buy it in hardcover and softcover. (The softie to loan out, ya know.) You don't see many stories told stricly in one point of view, but Ms. Gabaldon was able to do so quite well - still telling you how Jamie and the other characters felt simply by the way Clare saw their actions or reactions. Very hard to do, I would think - but it was done very effectively here. I've read all the books that have followed this one and it remains my favorite. I hope to see this one on the movie screen someday - but can't imagine anyone alive as magnificent as Jamie is on paper.
Rating: Summary: This is why Stonehenge has barbed wire around it!!! Review: I started reading this series 2 weeks before Voyager came out in paperback. I couldn't wait and bought book three in hardback. Then I went crazy waiting for Drums. Now I hope that I live long enough to finish the series, and the prequel that she is supposedly going to write about Brian and Ellen. I have all the hardbacks, 2 of the paperbacks, and all of the audio's abridged and unabridged. I remember a line from the NeverEnding Story that goes something like this:"Every time a book is read, the characters live again." We all want to meet Jaime and Claire, and that is probably why there is barbed wire around Stonehenge. They can't make a movie about this because no one would be satisfied with who played the parts. The screenwriters would wreck the story as we love it, and with the slash of editing your favorite scene would wind up on the floor. Perhaps a BBC full unabridged length maxi series for PBS? I wish I could write the way Diana does!!! This series is my all time favorite reading material. I think I'll go read Outlander for the eighth time, or is it the ninth?
Rating: Summary: Read this book, but be prepared to neglect EVERYTHING else! Review: Upon the recommendation of a friend, I read Outlander a few years ago. I was instantly drawn to the characters and fell in love with Jamie (OK...AND Claire too). I am not an avid book reader and care even less about history (There were CLANS in Scotland?), but once I started reading I could NOT put the book down. At the end of Outlander I had to have more, so I immediately purchased Dragonfly and Voyager...then had to WAIT for Drums! Diana Gabaldon's style of writing and exquisite details of lust, love, war and family leave me wanting more every time. I truly hope that this is a never-ending series!
Rating: Summary: Very good historical fiction Review: I first saw this book for sale as an "extra" copy at a library. After looking at the cover description, I decided to check it out rather thank buy it. Once I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. I now own this book and all the others the author has written, and I will buy the next one to come out. And I don't wait for the paperback. These are books I keep coming back to, to re-read.
Rating: Summary: PLEASE MAKE THESE BOOKS INTO A MOVIE!!! Review: I just finished reading Outlander and I am anxious to begin the next one! Diana Gabaldon has a wonderful gift! She is amazing! This book made me laugh until I cried, and cry until I sobbed. I don't want to give the plot away to those who haven't read it but I just want to say I haven't been affected emotionally by a book like this in a very long time!
Rating: Summary: Red haired Highlander captures this reader's heart Review: I haven't read much fiction during the past few years, but in September I picked up Outlander at the library, and have been thoroughly hooked for the past two months. I'm so glad I started this series after the sequels were written, because I immediately ordered all of them (from Amazon.com, of course.) I just finished the last book and am feeling withdrawl. What makes this a great read are the lush prose, gut-wrenching emotional situations and the wonderful characters. You can't help but fall in love with Jamie (whether you're a man or woman, it seems!). I like the detail about Claire's herbs and healing. The words "dinna fash and verra" keep creeping into my vocabulary. This is great recreational reading.
Rating: Summary: Starts slow, but is a keeper! Heroic and romantic. Review: I loved this book. It started slow, but when it picks up after the first chapter, it really takes off. I couldn't put it down. I immediately went and purchased all the author's other books. This book has adventure, sex, love, travel, everything! It gives you a glimpse of a 1800's Scottish highlanders life from the current day person's point of view. It was like having a fun history lesson.
