Rating: Summary: A VERY ENJOYABLE JOURNEY ACROSS TIME Review: My favorite historical fiction novel of the last year or two is The Triumph and the Glory, but Diana Gabaldon's time travel epic OUTLANDER is a close second. The appeal of this genre is the transportation of the reader to other times and places with style and compelling realism, and Gabaldon accomplishes this task very well indeed. Great reading, well-developed characters, a good balance of suspense and romance.
Rating: Summary: just great Review: outlander was given to me by a friend who said that i should read it on the plane. i do not read romance books but she told me it was worth it. i picked it up feeling a little lost in a new land. it only took three days to finish it. i then passed it to a friend. we talk about the book when we see each other. i am curently waiting the arrival of the sequal. this book has been passed all around. it was great.
Rating: Summary: The series sets a standard for historical romances Review: I came late to Diana Gabaldon's series, having begun just this past summer to listen my way through them with Recorded Books' unabridged versions, narrated by Davina Porter. It's been decades since I've been so taken with a set of characters and I am totally smitten by Jamie Fraser. Sure, the plot is contrived (time travel and a host of long-shot coincidences) and yes, there are parts that are unpleasant and violent, but it's a romance--you are assured that everything will turn out all right in the end. The enjoyment is in finding out what they have to go through to get to the end.No one has noted that the series is rather similar to Sergeanne Golon's Angelique books, published in the mid-60's-mid 70's. If you've finished all the Outlandish books, Angelique may tide you over until Diana Gabaldon's next book is published.
Rating: Summary: A GOOD BOOK Review: I found this to be a very good book, one that makes you want to keep reading. . . the charcters become real people you think you know, and you want to know more and more about them. . ..Hard to put down book! If you liked this book, or want to read one that goes straight to your heart, read Stolen Moments by Barbara Jeanne Fisher. . .It is a beautiful story of unrequited love. . .for certain the love story of the nineties. I intended to give the book a quick read, but I got so caught up in the story that I couldn't put the book down. From the very beginning, I was fully caught up in the heart-wrenching account of Julie Hunter's battle with lupus and her growing love for Don Lipton. This love, in the face of Julie's impending death, makes for a story that covers the range of human emotions. The touches of humor are great, too, they add some nice contrast and lighten things a bit when emotions are running high. I've never read a book more deserving of being published. It has rare depth. Julie's story will remind your readers that life and love are precious and not to be taken for granted. It has had an impact on me, and for that I'm grateful. Stolen Moments is written with so much sensitivity that it made me want to cry. It is a spellbinder. What terrific writing. Barbara does have an exceptional gift! This book was edited by Lupus specialist Dr. Matt Morrow too, and has the latest information on that disease. ..A perfect gift for someone who started college late in life, fell in love too late in life, is living with any illness, or trying to understand a loved one who is. . .A Christmas gift to be cherished forever.
Rating: Summary: A must read book Review: The book was fabulous! The first eight chapters are a bit slow, but then it really picks up and I could not put it down! I have recommended this book to about five of my freinds and they agree that this is a fabulous book. A very entertaining book. Outlander made me get angry, laugh, cry and fall in love with some of it's characters, as well as hate some of it's other characters. This book is definitely a must read!
Rating: Summary: Great Adventure& danger with well developed characters Review: I was very disappointed to read some of the negative reviews mentioning their dislike of the violence & lust in this book. That was indicative of that time period, like it or not. The characters were wonderfully strong with vivid personalities. I read the book for entertainment not to judge the content of it. Diana Galbaldon has an amazing talent to capture detail and immerse her reader into the story. I am interested in my Scottish ancestory because of these books and hope to do some research into them. I eagerly await her next work of brilliance!
Rating: Summary: Disappointing -- and VERY trashy Review: A huge disappointment. Outlander had a great premise and I was ready to be absorbed by it and its sequels. However I won't be reading any of those because I could barely stomach this one. Why? Long, repetitive lovemaking sessions and way too much rape and torture. The torture descriptions were endless, and I really couldn't understand why the author would think them necessary to the plot. The feud between Jamie and Jack Randall would have been much more interesting if Jack had been written to rely on his intellect, not his sadistic leanings. The medicine was interesting, so were the descriptions of life in 18th century Scotland. The rest? Endless and unnecessarily repulsive.
Rating: Summary: CAPTIVATING, Diana Gabaldon is amazing! Review: Diana Gabaldon is my favorite author of all time. I've read hundreds of books that don't compare to OUTLANDER. Once you start reading this book you will not be able to put it down, guaranteed. Jamie and Claire are memorable characters that will make you feel as though you are living in them, and experience every emotion that they do. OUTLANDER is a must read, no matter what type of book you like.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely wonderful! Review: When I accidently stumbled on the unabridged audiocassette version of Outlander, I haven't been able to stop listening. I listen on my way to work, at lunch, on my way home and while walking my dogs. Ms. Gabaldon is a wonderful writer! If I were reading it, I'd surely be up until the "wee" hours of the morning. Listening to the book makes all the difference, what with the Scottish accents and all. I find myself crying and laughing out loud. I just love these types of books, and my mother's maiden name was Beauchamp (go figure). I'm overjoyed I found this book and can't wait to read or listen to the rest. Makes you believe!
Rating: Summary: A complete and total mind escape into the 17th century Review: Outlander is an intoxicating read. Once started, forget any other plans, for you might just as well have fallen through the stones with Clair. And Jamie has a way of making any flesh and blood man seem dull in comparison. This is a compelling love story with more than a smidgen of historical fact intwined.
