Rating: Summary: Five Stars From a Reader Who Once Sneered at Romance! Review: I always considered romance one of the "lower" genres, something that only bored forty-year-old housewives read. Not something that that a young woman with a fancy English degree and an MA would like, surely. When I read Outlander, I was floored. How could this wonderful world and these fabulous charaters have so nearly escaped me? Ms. Gabaldon is witty and has done her research. Jamie and Claire burst off the page in full color-as one reviewer wrote, "they become a part of your family". Very true. I laughed. I cried. I was furious and enchanted every page of the way. Beautifully executed prose and realistic dialog are underscored by Gabaldon's accurate (and often painful) rendering of the places where love and compassion take root. A beautiful work that I hope will expand for years to come.
Rating: Summary: Incredible! Review: I bought this book looking for something more substantial than the usual cheesy romance novel, and I was not disappointed. The characters are wonderful, and the love scenes are hot - Jamie is the best character I've ever met. I read it in two days, and have already got the sequel. Do yourself a favor and buy this book!
Rating: Summary: best historical fiction ever Review: I only need to say that Jamie Fraser is the most wonderful character ever created. Read these books and you will be madly in love. Guaranteed.
Rating: Summary: Too Cool! Review: Be ready to stay up late night for a week. This huge book will be hard to put down.
Rating: Summary: loved it! Review: I have read this book a few times, and I think it's the best of the series. Looking over reviews, it seems a lot of people are really unhappy with the whole "wife beating" issue. Granted, it was graffic, and I DON'T condone it, but lets face it, Jamie is a product of his time, and saw nothing wrong with it. This book isn't for everyone, and if someone is expecting a true romance novel, they'll be disapointed...but if you're looking for a historical fiction with some romance/hot sex in the mix, read it!!
Rating: Summary: Outlander Review: I can't say enough about this books series. If I could give it a rating of more than a five I would. The characters are so real, they become part of your life. I would find myself talking to other people about the books and talk about Jamie and Claire as if they were real people. You get so engrossed in the stories. Definitly read the books in order, it is very important. Don't be afraid of the length of the books. I was was reading these 1000 page books in 3 to 4 days each, you will not want to put them down. These will go on your keeper shelf. I only wish Diana Gabaldon could write faster, I need another Jamie and Claire fix.
Rating: Summary: Well written but never-ending Review: This book is well written, and intriguing. I can tell Gabaldon put a lot of effort into researching the times, and language. However, it is neverending! The last 200 pages drag on and on, and Gabaldon keeps hammering the reader with more violence and unnecessary stories. Not only that, but I don't see the reason why Claire has to be from the present, flung into the past. The story could be just as adventurous if it took place all in the 1800s. And Claire is really a big wimp when it comes down to it. She can't even kill her husband's mortal enemy as he's torturing Jamie. An interesting read nonetheless, but I am not sure I will be reading the rest of the series.
Rating: Summary: seducing scotland Review: He is tall, red haired and SCOTTISH, witch means that he is running around in kilts all the time.Extremely attractive. The described person, Jamie Fraser, the teller's husband, was nevertheless not the first reason for me to investigate their story thouroughly.Claire, who is sent by Gabaldon-disregarding all likelihood-from the 20th century to 18th century Scotland, becomes victim of witch persecution in the Scottish village of Cranesmuir.Since I am attending a seminar at university"Witch craft and witch persecution in Scotland" I hoped to get some authentic insight into that issue;and I really read in this book about the Scottish peoples' believe in changelings, curses and witches at that time. Claire, of course, is saved by Jamie during the trial. The descriptions of sexual intercourse between Jamie and Claire add a very seductive touch to the story; therefore I couldn't put that book away(although it is full of clicheés and lacking logic and probability)And, as mentioned in the beginning, Jamie is indeed extremely attractive.
Rating: Summary: Don't be daunted by the length. Review: I just finished listening to the recordedbooks.com version of this story and even after the last (23rd!) tape I hated to hear it end. The reader, Davina Porter, starts off a little light but when the story changes times she seems to get her stride and go at it whole-heartedly. I rented it from my library, but am seriously considering buying it.
Rating: Summary: The Outlander Review: Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series is an addictive, fantastic, engrossing journey into 18th Century Scotland, post-war England, and modern-day Boston. I must admit that I am not a fan of romance novels, but this series has me hooked; I have read all 5 of the books and the Outlandish Companion at least two times each. I have now introduced no fewer than five friends to the series. I consider it the thinking person's romance novel; it is well-researched, beautifully written, original, pithy and lusty. The sex scenes are realistic and fantastic without being gratuitous. The history is detailed and accurate, and full of enough information to satsfy even a gentleman's desire for action. The characters are well-drawn and human; one feels they really know these people. I discovered these books five years ago and never tire of picking up one and sitting down for a quick "visit". When Ms. Gabaldon wrote her first novel in the series, she had never even visited Scotland. But her incredible talent for writing has given her legions of fans from all over the world, all of whom wanted to know upon first reading the book "where in Scotland are you from?"
