Rating: Summary: Wonderfully Original! Review: I had never heard of Diana Gabaldon before I picked up this book! Once I began to read, I couldn't stop! Claire is the heroine, and she is fabulous! She is a nurse in 1945 who accidently travels back in time to the 1700's. With her independence, knowledge and skill she definetly makes an impact! Jamie is strong, brave, handsome, funny, and so very lovable. He is a standard of what is right and good. There is a lot of interesting twists and turns that will keep you reading to find out "what next?". I was swept away with all of the characters, and am anxious to read the second book in Diana Gabaldon's series.
Rating: Summary: Surprisingly interesting Review: I was told by many people to try this author out, but held off for several years. The books are so large and intimidating. I never felt I would have the time to read the whole thing, not to mention I normally hate romance novels. I finaly gave in and tried Outlander and what a surprise. This is no ordinary romance novel...this is an adventure, fantasy, action novel. I read the whole book in a matter of three days. They ran to the local book store (no offense amazon) to pick up the next. I can't wait until Gabaldon continues the series with another novel.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding Outlander Review: This is the best book I have ever read. You will devour it and run out to get the next book in the series, and the next, and the next...I understand that the saga continues in a double trilogy (6 books in all). According to The Outlander Companion, Diana Gabaldon set out to write this book for practice, but what a book it turned out to be! I lost myself in the pages, picturing myself along with Claire and Jamie in old Scotland. It is packed with adventure, aingst, romance, history, herbology, medicine, and sensual scenes. This is not just another romance novel. It has such depth, humor, and plot twists, you will be captivated. The language and descriptions are fantastic. If you want to escape into another world, dash through the ancient stone circle with Claire and find passion.
Rating: Summary: The OUTLANDER series Review: WOW! I am on the 3rd book of the series and they keep getting more exciting everytime! Diana Gabaldon is AWESOME. She really did lots of research on absolutely every detail. I can't put it down and I have 3 other people at work reading them and they love the series too! Cheers to Diana Gabaldon! I will cry when the series ends but all good things come to an end. I can't wait to read more of her books in the future! Definately 5 STARS!
Rating: Summary: Love, love, loving this author Review: I discovered this author by accident, but I've never had a better mishap! Yes, this book is a slow starter; I almost gave up, until.... For anyone who gets the heebies about homosexual innuendo, this book is not for you. But, if you enjoy adventure, lots of it, and burgeoning love, snap this one up. I'm not alone in my love for Claire and Jamie, and I've eagerly read each book in this series. Yes, they are lengthy, but if you have the time and love for the characters, or even for Scottish history, READ THIS BOOK!
Rating: Summary: Fantastic Story! Review: As a fan of historical romance novels my review is not exactly unbiased. I found that I outgrew Victoria Holt and there wasn't much for more sophisticated historical romance fans. After seeing the reviews for Diana Gabaldon's books... I decided to give her a try and am I ever glad I did! This book has fascinating characters, an interesting plot and some history thrown in. The love story between Jamie and Claire is so intense and passionate but not without it's ups and downs. For anyone turned off by the time travel aspect, it really plays a fairly minor role. I'm so thrilled to have found such an excellent author because now I've got several weeks/months of compelling reading ahead of me.
Rating: Summary: An Incredible Journey Review: A really wonderful book. If you want to get away, do it with this book! The characters are so real you'll feel transported yourself.
Rating: Summary: A slow start, but a fabulous read. Review: When I first started this book, I thought it was too weird to be believable. A young English woman walks between two rocks and winds up in another century, but the more I read, the more enticed I became, and finally, halfway through the book, it became magical and so enthralling I could not put it down. Claire Randall does indeed walk through two rocks and wind up in another century. She doesn't count on that, certainly, but she surely doesn't count on falling in love and wanting to stay there! Thrust into the 18th century in the middle of the Scottish Highlands, Claire endures trials and tribulations that will have you glued to each page. The love story that develops between Claire and Jamie Fraser is the best I have ever read. Truly, this book takes you away, all the way to Scotland, and you too are transported into another century. A must read! (I have already started the second book in the series "A Dragonfly in Amber"). It promises to be as great as the first, but that is a tough act to follow.
Rating: Summary: Started a Little Slow But Was Well Worth The Wait! Review: Outlander drew me in slowly, but once I was hooked, I could not put it down! The characters are well-rounded, interesting and easy to love. Even the minor characters are so 3-dimensional, they come to life before your eyes. This is not your typical romance novel. There is action, evil, and bad things can and do happen. However, there are definately some HOT scenes. I highly recommend this novel to people who enjoy a novel with a little bit of everything.
Rating: Summary: An amazing first Novel of historical reality! Review: During a second-honeymoon in the British Scottish Highlands meant to reunite Claire and Frank Randall in Post WWII England after their equal service to the British armed forces, Claire finds herself in the midst of a Stonehenge-like circle "Craigh Na Dun" and subsequently slips through a crack in time transporting her to 1743 Scottish Highlands. Her adventure leads her to become enmeshed in late 18th century Scottish politics and a conveniently arranged marriage that not only saves her life but unexpectedly becomes the love of her life. The reader is taken through a long but fast-paced gripping 640 pages where "Romance" is merely a side step of this adventurous and finely woven tale. Far Fetched? Well, maybe to the straight historical reader. Otherwise, this reviewer begs to differ. One must certainly have a good appreciation for a little science fiction, a little history and a little romance (though not really a high focus despite mass-marketing as a romance) with a seemingly accurate theme of the violence and reality's of life in the Scottish Highlands during the eighteenth century. Diana Gabaldon knows her history and it shows in this, her first, novel. What makes this story is not the small romantic story line, but the knowledge and meticulous research used as a backdrop to this excellent novel. If you expect Romance and tawdry sex, move on to other historical romance's you won't find that here. You will find however, a relationship based on the reality of life in the 1740's where not all was silk and lace even in the best of relationships. Again, the romance is one backdrop of many and the strict romance fan will be disappointed. If you have an appreciation for History, knowledge of paganism and the workings of Catholic monasticism and a desire to open your imagination, you will love this book and like this reader, you'll be unable to put it down until it is finished, hurriedly running out after to purchase the sequel. An excellent work of historical fiction that deserves more than five stars.
