Summary: an incredible novel
Review: This novel, and all of Diana Gabaldon's others, are absolutely incredible! She combines history and fiction in what seem like an effortless manner. The developement of plot and character is so extensive that it's impossible to put the book down. Jamie, Claire and all of the characters that fill the pages of this novel come vividly to life and you are sure to feel like you are experiencing everything right along with them. I have never read a novel like it, and it remains my favorite. When you read this book, be prepared to laugh, cry, get very angry and do a lot of sighing. You should also be prepared to go out and buy the rest of the novles in Jamie and Claire's saga because if you read this book, you'll be hooked.

Summary: If You Love Time Travel...
Review: This sure is quite a book. WW2 is over, and Claire is reunited with her husband and they are on a second honeymoon.

But Claire's life is changed when she fell through a stone circle and woke up in 18 century Scotland. Claire meets Jack Randall, her husband's evil ancestor, and is rescued by James Fraser and co. And that's when the story really starts.

It's such a good book, the best of the series. Fantastic, really. You'll laugh, you'll cry and everything inbetween. The people she meets are remarkble. Diana Gabaldon introduces us to very unique people. I tought it fun that I could relate most of her characters to people I know. An amazing read for the time travel adventurers like us! It deserves 5 stars but I took off one because I found that I could never really personally relate with Claire, and I could of done without the 'incident' towards the end. But aside from that, it's great. It truly is a remarkable tale.

Summary: Excellent Book - Don't Give up on it
Review: Well I started this book and got about 100 pages into and put it down for 3 months.

Am I glad I had that long wait getting my car fix because the book was in my car and I picked it up again and from that point on I couldn't put it down!!

I'm not one for romances but this book is so well done. It touched my romantic side and my adventurer side. I laughed, cried and shook my fist. I still get irked when I think of that Capt. Randall. Hahaha funny how a book can affect you.

Get this book, read this book!

Summary: Failed to Enchant
Review: I purchased this book on the recommendation of a friend, and sadly, I discovered that this series is not my cup of tea. "Outlander," at 800-plus pages, is a lengthy read, and if the history and lore of Scotland do not captivate you, you're in for somewhat of a dull ride. Personally, I had no problem with the violence or the sexual content of the book; the romance between the main characters does capture the reader's heart, so in that aspect, this book is a winner. However, Gabaldon and "Outlander" failed to capture me, so I will not be exploring this series of books further.

Summary: Not Dorothy Dunnett
Review: I was recommended this book by Amazon and by a friend. I don't really know what I expected, but the book was not really what I expected to read. I am a firm fan of Ms. Dunnett and thoroughly enjoyed both of her series (Lymond and Niccolo). This book does not come close. The premise is a good one - the time travel back to 17th century Scotland, but there is really not much history here. Characters talk like they do nowadays with a slight Scottish burr. Don't be deceived - this is a "bodice-ripper" book, but the difference is that the woman does the ripping. Claire is a very strong-minded woman, and I'm sure would have been looked at askance and ostracized if she did happen to pop out of nowhere in these times. There are elements of exciting storytelling here, since I did read to the end but the adventure is really tame. The sense of time and place is really lacking with this author. This book seemed as long to me while I was reading it as it actually is. Because of this I didn't find the escapism that I was expecting. I may be a little harsh since I'm not usually a fan of this genre. I love historical novels, but my taste leads to more realistic ones like Michener and Uris. Romance in long skirts and pantaloons is still romance.

Summary: Quite a good read
Review: I have never in my life read a romance - time travel sort of story. A friend recommended it and I pretty much balked at the idea, but once Claire passed through into the other time and place, I was hooked. I thought the story started off boring and sort of hard to get into but I kept on and was glad I did so. Some things such as all the sex became redundant and pointless, but I think Gabaldon was out to prove Jamie's lust for Claire. I found the story captivating although I myself would be terrified to be put in such a barbaric time and try to survive. I applaud Gabaldon for creating a strong heroine instead of some whining and fainting girl who has to be saved by the man. Claire is an amazingly strong woman despite the circumstances she is put into.
I am interested as to how the other novels in this series turn out.

Summary: Buy the hardcovers right away
Review: Diana's Outlander series is just incredible--one of my all time favorites. I won't go into detail, because the editorial and customer reviews are more than adequate to let you know what it's all about, but if you like historical fiction and love stories, this will be your favorite. I have found nothing that surpasses this series. Other good things: they are long, so rereading the series is also entertaining and will take you a long time, so you don't feel you're reading something over and over. Also, there are more books coming! (2 or 3, I think). The hardest part is to wait for the next one, because it takes Diana a long time to write one (of course, it's worth it every time).
So go ahead and get the hardcovers right away, and don't bother with the paperbacks, because these you will want to keep a long long time.
