Rating: Summary: just one girls point of view Review: I liked this book a lot. My mother and I read it during our free time and I think it was worth the trudge through the boring parts to get to the times when the stories were absolutely fascinating. Glover told about History, Recipes and many other things. I especially loved it when he would speak of his meetings with friends.
Rating: Summary: Wine, Recipes, History and Friends Review: I'm not sure if I had expectations for this book. I had read parts of Glover's first book, Cave Life in France, and it kept finding it's way back into my mind so I picked up his second book, Deep France. Glover's style has changed from that of journaling to an antedotal storytelling approach. Which in and of itself was an interesting tidbit. His focus varied so the quest of the book's mission did as well, if the book indead had a goal other than to inform us of whatever interested Glover through the eyes by which he viewed and experienced the world. Is that such a bad thing? I'd think not. Nothing wrong with learning about places, people and things one would otherwise not be exposed to. I would recommend this book if you have the leisure and desire to experience many different facets of French culture and some of the specialties it includes; such as some fine recipes, proper ediquette in finer resturants, how to slaughter a cow, and a delightful dandelion salad. Or perhaps, if you want a flavor of the sorts which mull around the quaint town of Lavardin, which has the priviledge of still being home to approximately 250 townsfolk. There were a couple places in the book where Glover went on about this or that war and the stories special to the town, or perhaps a place he visited. Although I would never pick up a book about a war I did find his insites quite interesting and was glad to be informed.
