Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: A very good product. Knowing nothing at all about the world of palm pilots and pocket pc's, I started looking into them. Aside from working full time, I was getting ready to go to school and figured I might need a little help keeping myself and my schedule a little more well organized. My first decision...I decided to go with the lince of pocket pcs rather than the palms. From there, it wasn't an easy decision, but after comparing costs, things like memory, the different features, etc. I decided to go with the HP Jornada 548...not one of the newer, but not one of the oldest models either. I've got to say, it was one of the smartest shopping decisions I've ever made. I've owned mine for about 6 months now, and I have absolutely no regrets. Easy start up, easy to sync, and the memory is more than adequate. For someone hesitant about buying a pocket pc, I'd say this is definitely a good buy!

Rating: Summary: Good product, questionable HP support Review: After testing several versions of Palm devices, I purchased a Jornada 548 last month. I use all of the Outlook functions at work and need access to them when I travel. The Jornada syncs up perfectly with Outlook as I have not encountered a single problem. The character recognition is far superior to the Palm units I worked with as the strokes are more consistent with natural printing. The color resolution is nice (even at 12 bit) but viewing during the day (direct sunlight) is nearly impossible. Don't bother with the HP "Executive Leather Case" accessory. The card pocket is poorly designed such that when you open the front flap any cards of significant weight (credit cards, business cards) WILL fall out. I have several issues with HP's customer service, however. I had contacted them regarding whether any external keyboards were available from other manufacturers. Two different reps told me they weren't. I then brought my Jornada to CompUSA and found 2 models that were available and which functioned just fine. On another call I was told that the compact flash memory I already owned was incompatible with the Jornada (it wasn't). As a loyal HP customer (of their consumer products as well as their business line of minicomputers)of 15 years I'd expect a much better level of service ...
Rating: Summary: No Pocket PC 2002 Review: For its day the 548 was a stunning piece of equipment. I have been a Jornada 548 owner since week 1 of its release. I am disappointed to report, however, that the older Jornada models have been left in the dust by the Compaq-HP merger. Ipaq'ers get an upgrade from the Pocket PC OS to the newer, marginally better Pocket PC 2002 OS. Although the OS is only moderately more useful, it is aesthetically more pleasing and is symbolic of the fact that the 548 will receive little attention or support from HP/Compaq ever again. Also, the lack of back up batteries is quite a nuisance when you lose all drivers and software because you forgot to recharge the 548. Furthermore, and this may be my error, I never found a car charger for it which would have been useful given the adequate, but not stellar battery life. I would suggest buying a newer piece of equipment, its worth the dough.
Rating: Summary: HP Jornada 547/548 Review: Great PDA, beats out any palm type device by a longshot in capability expandability. Only draw back is ever shrinking selection of aftermarket goodies for it due to the processor.
Rating: Summary: Could be a lot better for the price. Review: I bought the Jornada 548 and returned it within 30 days because it just didn't have the functionality it implies it has. For one, I am a heavy Outlook user and in order to synchronize subfolders or personal folders from my desktop the only solution was another [...] third party software package.....which by the way offers the same solution for my Palm III. This was the primary feature I was looking for and told the HP had. The tech support wasn't much help either. I both emailed and called to find a solution to the sychronization problem. The call in support said the feature was there, but I needed a patch from Microsoft. The email support didn't answer for 10 days. Upon checking with Microsoft, they said the feature doesn't exist with Active Sync, but referred me to the third party package Intellisync. Bottom line is I returned the Jornada, bought Intellisync for my Palm III and can now syncronize subfolders and personal folders. If you like the color display and layout (Microsoft vs Palm OS) which I admit is very nice, friendly, and easy to use, then spend the [money]. This platform has quite a bit of maturing to do before I will lay out that kind of cash.
Rating: Summary: The Jornada is great--as long as there's an outlet nearby Review: I generally agree with the 4 and 5 star reviews on the HP Jornada, however... I'm puzzled by the lack of complaints about the Jornada's power limitations--am I the only one who gets annoyed about having to recharge the darn thing every 6-8 hours? I've been using the 545 (which I believe is identical to the 548, less 16 MB of RAM) and I find the short battery life frustrating. While there's no problem making it through the average work day, you need to be diligent about recharging every single night. Don't expect to pass the time on an international flight by playing Golf and listing to mp3's--you'll be reading the airline magazines through the remaining two thirds of the flight. Oh yeah, I'm not using any flash cards either. The manual warns that these can rapidly drain the battery, particularly modem cards...yikes. Another worrisome tidbit: the Jornada's main battery is it's only battery. So if you don't recharge it in time (within 3 days after a low-battery shut off) you'll lose everything in ram (e.g. contacts, to do's, appointments, additional programs, ...) Seems like I'm working for the Jornada rather than the other way around.
Rating: Summary: Solid as a rock Review: I hope my title will not discourage any readers, but this is exactly what I mean about JHP Jornada 548. I do admit that I was tempted by high-quality features of iPaq (32/64 MB, great display, better battery life and weight), but Jornada is simply cheaper..., more convenient (metal display cover and integrated Flash card slot) and more professional looking. I really do not want to repeat so many others stating the same things. After so many months, I finally succeeded to save enough money for one of these devices, and I made my move. HP 548 was everything I wanted. It was fast enough, with good display, had safety features (metal cover), very reliable battery and extensive software. Only downside I could find is non-existence of an utility to help you close the running programs, but you can easily correct this problem by downloading some of the freeware applications. For those who believe that these units should be easy to carry around, I would like to remind you that iPaq, which weighs less than HP Jornada, grouped with Sleeve Jacket weighs more than integrated Jornada and absolutely violates the concept of palm-top devices. All this and many more little details are why I highly recommend this unit. You can't go wrong with HP.
Rating: Summary: Great capabilities, but... Review: I really wanted to like the Jornada 548. I have a Palm V and was looking for something with more capabilities for my weekly plane flight. I look and feel of the Jornada is great, barely bigger than a Palm III and only weighing a little more. The screen looked great and the speaker worked fairly well for such a small size. The location of the stylus is not ideal, as it lies underneath the unit's flip cover. Why did I end up returning the unit? Ease of use... The menu system is horrible and awkward. You can't customize your start menu as you can a regular PC. You also can't close your programs with a quick tap or button. You have to dig down a few menu clicks to shut down programs. This is very tidious and annoying. If you have more than 2-3 programs running, the unit slows down considerably. If you plan on downloading lots of software, you will probably have to buy a Compact Flash card. And they are expensive, around $.. for 128mb card. I also had problems with the Activesync program. I copied 2 mp3s to my unit, and every time I synced up afterwards, there were conflicts with those 2 mp3 files. This quickly become annoying. Also, copying files to the unit takes a long time. A 4mb file took a few minutes. Can you imagine how long it till take to copy 10-15 mp3s? I really wanted to like this unit. I just couldn't overcome how annoying the interface is. My Palm V is so much easier to use. But if you are looking for a unit with multimedia capabilities and pocketWord and Excel, this is a good choice. Just be forewarned of the drawbacks...
Rating: Summary: Excellent value - great organizer Review: I recently replaced an aging Palm IIIx with the Jornada 548, and what a great choice! I'll start with the two cons I have about the 548 - it's a bit on the bulky and heavy side compared to other Jornadas and PDAs in general. And the record button could be moved down or to the right side, I always seem to mistakenly press it and end up with some muffled sound recordings. On the positive side (and there are many!), the customizable screens and buttons are fantastic. If you're not happy with the pre-determined buttons on your home menu, then simply change them - really, it's that easy. The MP3 player is relatively simple to figure out and download to, and the sound is ok for a PDA; not top quality, but good enough for voice recordings. The recorder does copy sounds as MP3 files, so it can take up a lot of space (the ease of adding memory is a bonus). The feel of the casing is great, I feel like I could drop this and it would bounce right back (though I haven't performed that stunt quite yet!). It has a nice rubber-ish grip on the side that is quite comfortable to hold. The setup is quick and easy, especially if you sync to 2 different machines. Overall, this is in my opinion the best PDA you'll find for [the price]. Forget the Palm - go with the Jornada!
