Summary: Zire 21 - A great little gadget for well lit offices
Review: The Zire 21 was my first exposure to the PDA world. I couldn't believe how handy this little gadget was. Everything you ever wanted to remember plus more could easily be stored and retrieved very easily. The only problem was the lack of backlighting. I used it so much that it became a strain to my eyes. I'm now hooked on PDA's but upgraded to one that has a back-light. Thanks Zire for a wonderful gadget but a back light is urgently needed!

Summary: Do not buy this handheld
Review: This is a terrible product. Mine died 2 days after the 30 day warrenty ran out. This model does not have a backlit screen -- it is useless in dim light or the dark. Don't waste your money (or time) on the Zire 21.

Summary: Its the same product over again.
Review: This is basically an upgraded version of the old original Zire. You get 8mb of RAM this time and the processor is a little quicker but it's still got all the old problems of its predecessor.

The screen needs to have a backlight, it's so annoying not being able to see the screen, Nintendo recently released a gameboy with a backlight and it's so much clearer to see, the Zire needs a backlight!

Other then that though it's a perfect palmtop, the Original Zire was an ace and this is a follow up to that; the same machine just speeded up a little.

I'd recommend buying this, it has the look of an expensive piece of kit, just I really want a backlight so just 3 stars!

Summary: What a waste of time!
Review: This is one of the first times I have EVER bought anything electronic without consulting amazon or consumer reports first. NEVER AGAIN!! After MANY tears and sending the zire back to get fixed, and having it reset itself the day I get it back AGAIN...I finally think, hmm I wonder if anyone else has had this problem, I had an Palm Vx before and had NO PROBLEMS whatsoever and so I just trusted the Palm name. Never again. Buyer beware.

Summary: The Zire 21 resets when placed near your cell phone !
Review: This is outrageous - my Zire 21 was frequently doing spontaneous hard resets, losing all the data. I finally figured out why - it can't be kept near a cell phone. Huh ???? What do they think we're all carrying around with us all the time ? Someone should file a class action lawsuit and make them do a recall on all these units ... Meanwhile, don't buy one unless you want to be constantly backing up your data, since Palm is apparently doing nothing about this.

Summary: you get what you pay for
Review: This is really a 3.5 not a 4 rating, but that's how the rating system works here. The hot sync function between the Zire & my Microsoft Works calendar and address book work perfectly, I've downloaded a couple of games and a couple of e-books (they also work just fine), and I have plenty of memory left over for extensive note-taking. I have also attempted to recreate the cell phone problem some people complained about...I even put the phone right on top of the Zire while calls came in, but to no avail...there were no resets and no was data lost.

Absence of a back light is troublesome, but other than that this a nice little device for personal use...I can't understand why people are trying to use this for their businesses...get real, folks, you get what you pay for.

Sure beats hauling my old organizer around, let alone a heavy and expensive laptop computer.

Summary: This is the worst machine ever!
Review: This is the third Zire 21 in 2 months and they were brand new! Palm admits the major bug: it resets itself and erases all data for no apparent reason. The inconvenience of this is unimaginable. Palm refuses to upgrade another machine and don't know when they will fix this bug. They said this bug occurs when you place the Zire near cellphones, which is ludicrously inconvenient! I've had it reset when charging on the cradle next to my computer. Don't buy this machine or you are stuck with it!

Summary: Good while it lasted but support is lousy
Review: Two days short of the 90-day warranty period ending, my Zire21 went totally dead. I emailed PalmOne's support and was told that there is a known problem with the battery (and they keep selling it?). But they couldn't provide support by email. I had to call their toll number for support. There would be a $25.00 charge to talk with their tech support unless the device was covered under warranty. Since I had to pay for the phone call, I expected to talk with someone who spoke fluent English. I could barely understand and hear the woman and I had to keep asking her to repeat what she said. I gave her the SN and purchase date, but for some reason she could not "bring up the manufacturer's warranty." I asked "Aren't you from PalmOne?" She said they were just the support line (meaning outsourced, off-shore cheap labor). Even though I registered the purchase online with PalmOne, she asked me to fax or mail a copy of my purchase receipt. I asked why my online registration wasn't acceptable, but she would not answer me. If they repaired it out-of-warranty, I would be charged $25.00 for the support call plus $75.00 for the repair, plus shipping and handling. That's more than I paid for it! I liked it when it worked, but I'll never buy another PalmOne product. Their support is lousy and their product / warranty registration means absolutely nothing! And since I can't find the purchase receipt (people actually keep those things?), I'll throw the thing away.

Summary: Dead duck
Review: Unlike others, I was pretty satisfied with my machine. I only wanted a replacement for my old Handspring, which some 3 months ago had passed away.

Palm managed to sell me this piece of s...tuff that died within 94 days. Nothing. Nada. No reset, no nuffin helped. Great job.

Beware. Don't buy.

Summary: sort of satisfied
Review: Well I have read the entire first page of reviews and while reading them, I found out that what the people were saying was true. For me it has been a good pda and hasnt had the problem of resetting near cell phones. To tell you the truth, at this very moment it is 6 inches away from one right now and its still working fine. So for whoever had this problem, I think its just bad luck. But in the past I have had to reset it myself because it would freeze up when I put certain games on it. So overall I think it was good and I didn't like the fact that there was no backlight. So if you are a first time pda user, you should get it.
