Summary: A great surviver story
Review: I had a very smart and very good teacher in grade school. We had to read a certain amount of books each year, and some we HAD to read as a class so we could discuss them. The Iceberg Hermit was one of them, and I have to say that it was one of my favorites of the must-read stories we had to pick from, right up there with Bridge to Terabithia, Tuck Everlasting, Mrs. Mike and Where the Red Fern Grows.

I had lost my copy years ago, but thought of it again recently. So I was pleasantly surprised that it was still in print. I remember how my imagination soared, trying to picture the main character stranded in the middle of nowhere. I was transported to another place and time, and 20 years after reading the book, I can still remember it vividly. If you are looking for some good reading material for your children, this will NOT disappoint.

Summary: cool book
Review: I read this book in my school. I thought it had childrens sort of words, and was jumbled up as it went through the story. It would not make a great childrens book, because it contains all the words which they have already learned. Such vocabulary is in this sentence from this book. "While still a good distance from the beach, both hunters got down on their belliesand started to squirm forward." This sentence is one of the many that is poorly written. I fear that many schools own these books. In my fifth grade class, we are reading this book. It is one of the worst I have seen. Here is another example from the book. It's structure is one that is not supposed to be composed of this certain way. "He would show them that with his own weapon he was just as good a hunter as anyone else in camp. And he wouldn't he wouldn't have to crawl on his bellie either. He marched ahead of the two hunters and as he was crossing the shingled beach, the geese rose from the water. Confidently Allan raised his weapon and fired. And missed. Not a single goose altered rythem of it's wings flapped...)"

If you have a child ins chool who is reading this book, your child may be behind. This book definately deserves 1 star or less. I believe it should win an award for being the most poorly writtien book in the universe! Please, do not get this book, or any others that are like this. It was once a good book, but the writer put it down to kindergarden version!

SO trust me! Keep your kid ahead in school..... NOT BEHIND!!

Summary: The miraculously true story of an Arctic shipwreck survivor.
Review: I recently paid 25 cents for this book in a ramshackle used bookstore on the Washington Coast more than seventeen years after I first read it. Upon second read, with the critical eye of an adult, The Iceberg Hermit is as fascinating in 1998, as it was in 1980. Any fan of survival stories, nature, and animals will find this book enchanting.

Summary: A great surviver story
Review: One of the best books I have read in the past year has to be "The Ice burg Hermit, by Arthur Roth. It is a marvelous book about a man who finds a way to survive in the cold. One of the major reasons I enjoyed this book so much is that it is full of action . The ice berg hermit is trying to survive in the cold depths of the seas. Another reason I enjoy this book and found this book to be so wonderful but suspenseful. He fights polar bears and you never know when a polar bear comes to kill Allen. Of course my favorite reason for having this book is, that it is full of action. The best action part in the book is when he tries to swing to the iceberg to save his life and almost dies. As for as I am concerned Author Roth hit the nail on the head of this book

Summary: Good story, not very well written
Review: The Iceberg Hermit is about a young castaway, Allan, stuck on an iceberg somewhere in the Arctic seas. Through a long preriod of time,Allan battles lonliness, nature, and wild animals. Soon, on his icy prison for a home, he befriends a young polar cub to keep him company. Many stuggleds and battles within and out keep Allan busy for a time being, but will he ever return to his home and see his love and family? To find out you should read this adventure bound book. I did enjoy this book , but the plot has been done alot. Plus the book seemed to drag. Overall i do recommend this book to others.

Summary: Terrific
Review: This is a fantastic survival story of a young man, alone in the frozen, 18th century Arctic winter, and how he defies the odds to survive. As far as I know, this was never a movie, but, well, it should be, that's all I can say. It is inspiring, exciting, interesting... just an all-around amazing story.

One thing I wanted to mention -- why haven't more people commented on the intriguing possibility that Allan Gordon really might have found the remnants of the lost Greenland vikings? That's the most interesting part of the story, for me. A lost band of descendants of the vikings, travelling around Greenland with their lowered technological abilities, unable to make their way back home... For my money, that's the coolest part of this story. I wonder if it could be true. If any kids are interested in this kind of thing, please look at these books -- "The Penguin Historical Atlas of the Vikings," edited by John Haywood; or "A History of the Vikings" by Gwyn Jones. These are both very interesting introductions to the viking era of history, which is actually FAR more completely understood, by people who study these things, than many people realize.
