Muckenhoupt deals with each of the major developments in Freud's thinking, from his early work with hysterics to his controversial theories on human sexuality (which she tackles directly, with the explicit detail necessary to discuss Freud properly). Numerous photographs supplement the elaborate delineation of late-19th- and early-20th-century scientific knowledge.
