Rating: Summary: A good book about art and self-discovery Review: After you read the back cover of "The Monument," you might expect the book to be mainly about a monument. In a way it is, in other ways it's not. Rachael was adopted and she now works where her new father does and doesn't really know what she wants to do with her life. That is, until she meets an artist named Mick, who is supposed to make a monument for Bolton, Kansas, where 18 war veterans were killed during battle. Rachael finds out that she wants to be an artist just like Mick. She will learn from Mick and the monument what art is all about.I thought "The Monument" was a pretty good book for what it was. I like Gary Paulsen's books about survival and adventure a lot better, but this was a pretty good book. If you like art, you'll probably like "The Monument" a lot more than if you don't like art that much.
Rating: Summary: The Monument Review: Although it is a simple story, it is probably my favorite Gary Paulsen book so far. It talks a lot about art, but the real point of the book is a minority, handicapped girl who learns how to see life in a new way and discovers that she has a talent of her own. Along with that is a town that comes together to make one decision that will help it heal and then grow together. This book is short and easy to read, but makes a lasting impression.
Rating: Summary: The Monument Review: I liked the book because it was set in an agricultural community. I would recommend this book to other people because it was a easy book to read and follow.
Rating: Summary: one of the bestest books Review: I really liked the book.it made me look in deeper to the way other people live like people who drink. They might look stupid but they do stuff like mike he drinks but he does something he loves art!
Rating: Summary: one of the bestest books Review: The Monument by Gary Paulson was one of his worst books he has written. I think that this book is terrible. I think that it is a terrible book for a 13-year-old boy. I think that it is only good in the way that it is short and the words are in size font 20. It is a very easy to read book just to get it over with. It would be a great book for people who are obsessed with art. I think art and paintings and drawings are so stupid and senseless. My art teacher says, everything on earth revolves around art. I dont understand how the entire universe has something that has to do with art. Here is a brief summary about this book. In a little town of Bolton, Kansas lives a little girl named Rockey. She grew up in a foster home where she gets adopted and finds lots of love for her new family and also for art. She discovers her true talent is making painting and drawing of the town and the people around her. The town of Bolton, Kansas is deciding to create a monument in the town for the people who have died in past wars. The man who is constructing the monument is named Mick. Mick and Rockey meet and together they create a strong bond. They paint and draw pictures of the town and decide that the town needs a statue of some sort. There is some democracy over this and a few breaks and bends in what they are trying to do. By:Sean

Rating: Summary: It was pretty good Review: The Monument is nothing new. We have all heard the story before. Poor pre-teen meets unreliable mentor. Mentor changes poor kids life, leaves town. All is good. I was bored by the book and I was happy when it was over. It is an easy read, so if you need something to take up pages for school, it is perfect. There is no deeper meaning to The Monument. I found the Monument to be more of an art lesson than a novel. Although I had no interest in the story, after reading it I had a new respect for artists and the work they do. I am not an artist, at all. But Mick kind of made me feel like I could do it. Let's not get ahead of ourselves though, the book inspired no new ambitions, it just helped my English grade. I had never read a Gary Paulsen book before, and I assure you that I never will. Unless my life depends on it. If you have trouble with understanding good stories, The Monument is a great settlement between greatness, and boredom. Don't let me tell you though, read it for yourself, it won't take long.
Rating: Summary: The Monument Review: The Monument was a great book if you like art. It gives you the feel for what other artists like to draw and how they draw. It all starts when Rocky meets the person who is deciding on the Monument. The artist, Mick, helps her find that she likes to draw and there is no right or wrong way to draw. Even though Mick might not draw the most enjoyable pictures, he still makes the town have a great monument that represents what the town's centerpiece. I recommend this book for people who want to be artistic and people who really want to learn about art. Find out what Mick does for a Monument and more about Rocky's life in The Monument.
