Summary: Good, but not that good
Review: This book was good, but not as good as the hype has made it out to be. Haynes was very conceited on Oprah and that diminished her and her book in my eyes. The book was very hard to read, but after page 125 it really gets going. If you can stay with it until there good luck, it took me three months. I usually read a book every two to three days. If you are pressed for time to read, read another book because this one is not worth the time.

Summary: AN OK BOOK!
Review: I was dissapointed when I read this book. I found it difficult to read and keep interested in it. I guess it is different for everyone. If Oprah chose it, I am sure there is something in those pages that I missed. . .If you want to read a book that goes straight to your heart, read Stolen Moments by Barbara Jeanne Fisher. . .It is a beautiful story of unrequited love. . .for certain the love story of the nineties. I intended to give the book a quick read, but I got so caught up in the story that I couldn't put the book down. From the very beginning, I was fully caught up in the heart-wrenching account of Julie Hunter's battle with lupus and her growing love for Don Lipton. This love, in the face of Julie's impending death, makes for a story that covers the range of human emotions. The touches of humor are great, too, they add some nice contrast and lighten things a bit when emotions are running high. I've never read a book more deserving of being published. It has rare depth. Julie's story will remind your readers that life and love are precious and not to be taken for granted. It has had an impact on me, and for that I'm grateful. Stolen Moments is written with so much sensitivity that it made me want to cry. It is a spellbinder. What terrific writing. Barbara does have an exceptional gift! This book was edited by Lupus specialist Dr. Matt Morrow too, and has the latest information on that disease. ..A perfect gift for someone who started college late in life, fell in love too late in life, is living with any illness, or trying to understand a loved one who is. . .A gift to be cherished forever.

Summary: Mother of Pearl
Review: Mother-of-Pearl was a real jewel! I normally read very fast, however, this was a difficult book to read until you got into the rythum of the author's style. Once this was accomplished I loved every line. The author certainly has a unique style. Very entertaining!

Summary: Uniquely hilarious and heart wrenching
Review: I found this book to be very interesting. I spent several nights reading this book because I did not want to lose the flavor of the characters. The characters are rich and unique. The writer captured the individuality of each character and entwined them to make a great story.

I embarrassed myself a couple of times on our plane ride laughing out loud in some of the scenes.

Summary: Second only to Angela's Ashes
Review: Judging by the reviews, I guess one either loves or hates this book. I loved this book. Did not want it to end. The characters' dialog is most memorable. Laughed out loud many times and fell in love with every character. I hope the author continues the story one day.

Summary: One of the best books I've read in 10 years
Review: I loved this book and cried through the last 30 pages. And I never cry over books or movies. The imagery and dialogue were wonderful and the characters were interesting. Unlike other reviewers, I never got bored and stayed up late to read it. It is long, but I still read it in only a couple of days. I have not enjoyed most of Oprah's other picks, but thought this one was terrific.

Summary: This book was an incredible disappointment
Review: As an avid reader and a fan of most of Oprah's Book Club selections, I have to admit that I was truly disappointed by Mother of Pearl. The characters really lacked definition and despite the various stages of turmoil each was facing in their lives, I didn't care about any of them or what happened to them. The story lines for each character seemed to go no where -- very slowly. Since the book was so long and drawn out and I didn't much care about any of the characters, I actually stopped reading the book with only about 100 pages left. I have never, ever not finished a book before, no matter how bad -- so that should give you an idea of how awful this one was. If you're looking for a good book along the lines of Oprah's usual picks, try Home is Where the Heart is by Billy Letts, Here on Earth by Alice Hoffman or Black and Blue by Anna Quindlen.

Summary: don't bother
Review: I am an Oprah book club aficionado. Love most of them, but once in a while she picks a clunker. This is one of them. I couldn't get into it, didn't enjoy the characters, nothing happened, and it was still confusing. I don't understand how it got such good reviews in the trades. It is impossible to wade through and, ultimately, not worth the effort. IMHO.
