Rating: Summary: a trying experience Review: I can still recall when I read this book. I love to read and am an avid reader, but I can't describe the dread in me when I read this book. It is one of the most boring books that I have ever read and it seems to drag on without end. I believe that one star is an undue compliment.
Rating: Summary: This makes Africa look worse, not better.... Review: My my, this book is downright awful. I can't believe that I was forced to read this book. The language in this book was too confusing, and I can't even believe that anyone could enjoy reading a book like this. You need a translator for every single page. This book is way too confusing for the average reader (I am an honors student) and even the more advanced reader would find difficulty reading this book. If I could rate this book with no stars, I certainly would.
Rating: Summary: Things (don't) Fall Apart in this book Review: What a great book! Achebe draws out a wonderful picture of African customs and beliefs. As the book advances, you don't know who to root for. You have Okonkwo, who is battling demons from his past and takes out his anger on his three wives and many children. Then you have the Christains, who are trying to do good, but don't understand the tribe's culture. Only four stars because the story is kind of slow in the beginning, but a very good read.
Rating: Summary: Book to be cherished Review: This book contained so many values within it, whether it was family, religion, pride, or emotion. This book is excellent for a lesson on life as well as a history lesson. Read it!
Rating: Summary: An interesting story of an african tribe under colonial rule Review: Things Fall apart is a great novel for everyone. It is about an african tribe taking place in nigeria africa. The tribe is taken over by colonial rule and the book tells how Okonkwo a brave warrior of the tribe deals with the problems that come along with the colonial rule. The problems that the tribe faces can relate to anyone no matter where they live or what their culture and way of life is. Some people may be attracte3d or unattracted to the book because of it's setting and basic plot. Don't be. the story gives the reader a lot more thatn just an entertaining story. It teaches many lessons for people young old whatever. Thjings fall apart is a book for all telling what happen when thing dont go as planned and how society deals with them.
Rating: Summary: A story about a man trying to regain his homeland. Review: This book was very interesting because of the intriguing themes. For, instance a man is trying to return home to regain his kand from the british settlers. Or, how Okonkwo's son, Nwoye, struggles to become a man with the abscence of his father. Things Fall Apart had a great structure to it as well. Chinua Achebe tells us a vivid story through the use of vocabulary, setting, and the use of combining his life with the story. For these reasons this book is one to read by all.
Rating: Summary: A book on life about when things dont go how they're planned Review: Things Fall Apart is one of Chinua Achebe's finest works. It takes place in Nigeria and tells about a brave warrior of an african tribe. His name is Okonkwo. The tribe is taken over by colonial rule, and has to face the problems that come with the white men. The book is very interesting and the events that happpen to the characters through out the story can be related to every day life almost every where in the world. I enjoyed learning about a culture and way of life that was unfamiliar to me. The story is very well written and gives the reader times of suspense, joy and anger. It is entertaing to try to predict what actions the characters will take in reaction to their surroundings. The setting is very unique and the time period tells about the hardships of people whose feelings are usually taken for granite. The point of view that Achebe tells the story through makes you think twice about who you are and who your ancestors were. The book is great to see what happens when things fall apart and don't go exactly as planned. I love the inability to predict future events of the book. This adds loads of suspense. The ending is very unique and unpredictable. The main character, Okonkwo deals with things in a different fashion than most people probably would.
Rating: Summary: I enjoyed reading this book so much! I couldn't put it down! Review: I am a freshman in highschool, and I read this book in my ninth grade English honors class. We read it earlier in the year, yet I still remember the whole story. It was about a man named Okonkwo and all the hard times he went through in his life. I saw the story as a ladder; he started out walking up, or climbing to success, and gradually fell throughout the novel. His experiences were described very clearly and Chinua Achebe gives the reader picture perfect visions of what is happening. I highly recommend this book for your leisure reading.
Rating: Summary: An in-depth look at another culture, but very universal theme Review: Things Fall Apart was a well-written novel, and gave me a very nice change of pace since the culture was so different from my own. I liked the story but it dragged at times, and some of Okonkwo's actions seemed without reason. I can thoroughly understand however, why this novel is so widely read. It is because of the many universal themes that I feel, as humans, we can all benefit from reading about.
Rating: Summary: Not that Bad Review: I did not like this book at all. My english teacher makes us read these books about culture which I do not like at all. They are usually boring and not what I expectd. I wish we didn;t have to read these books. When I was readin it I thought it was okay, but then it got way to culteral for my taste. I have to give Achebe credit though, because if I did like these types of books then it would be awesome book. I mean I liked some parts when they explained there culture, and i also liked the parts when I read about there different ceremonies and stuff. Anyway If you arent the tyoe of person that likes to read books on culture you shuld not read this book.
