Rating: Summary: BORING Review: This book had a good warning about futur totalitarian government but it was way too wordy. I had too much description and was really boring at the beginging that it took me a while to get through it. The love affair was discusting and the torture and Winston's viens were discusting and horrifying..Thats it
Rating: Summary: anti-totalitarian, not anti-solialist Review: i write this is response to the reviews stating such things as "down with communism" and "freedom demands inequality, orwell understood this". orwell was, himself, a social democrat. 1984, while being a brilliant novel and political commentry, is not really a critique of communism in it's pure form, nor of socialism and equality. it is a tirade against totalitarianism, orthodoxy and overpowerful government.
Rating: Summary: A chilling reminder of how good we have it, how bad it gets Review: This book is the stuff of nightmares. I've had several since reading it, and they are well justified. Anyone who ever questions how free we in this country truely are or who feels we're being represses, read this book. You'll come away from it determined not to see a future like this. 1984 is a gem, both for its horror-movie frightening power and its ability to affect readers deeply. Read and be scared.
Rating: Summary: It was an okay book.... Review: I was required to read this book for my High School Practical Law class. I realize that most teens (at least in my class) would never attemp to read this book. The politics and theorys are quite deep. I was extremely bored and had a hard time getting through it.. But I just finnished it and am glad that I did. As much as I was confused by it, I enjoyed it. But I did fall asleep on the couch whil reading the part where Winston was reading to Julia. It got to be a bit lenghty but I am glad I read it, and for you teens who are requried to read it too, Good luck to all of you!Maureen:) Age 15
Rating: Summary: 1984 is based on "We" by Jevgenij Samjatin Review: 1984 On september the 6.th someone said that Orwell never read, and therefore was not inspired by "We". That is not true. I have got a rewiew of "we" that Orwell wrote in 1947. Besides, I have read a danish translation of Samjatins novel, and there are loads of parralels. But still I regard 1984 as one of the greatest, and most visionary, novels of modern times.
Rating: Summary: It was ALRIGHT...coming from a teen Review: Well, I was forced to read 1984 for my english class in high school, and welp, it bored the hell out of me. Though, I'd have to say everything about it is indeed overwhelming and too much to take in at the same time. Perhaps if i was 30 years old or something, i would have liked it more. I dunno, it just didn't appeal to me all that much. I understand the point of the novel, the fear of governments taking over unjustly, but man, what's with the details! Gooood.....anyway, i do reccommend the book because behind everything, the premise is something to think about...
Rating: Summary: the most powerful political novel ever written Review: This book will stay with you forever. It is such a horrific prophecy of socialist control of government that you will find your resolve strengthened to continue to fight for the freedoms with which we are blessed in this country. You will be intrigued throughout this book and find yourself with a new heightened awareness of the brutal nature of governmental control of our lives.
Rating: Summary: the end is near!!! a ha ha ha ha ha!!!!!! Review: Just as high lord Orwell predicted, the world is at an apocalyptic state. Constant war, no privacy, thought police, the world is truly at its end. Though this lowly species has somehow managed to survive 15 years longer than lord Orwell predicted, surely this feeble race will extinguish itself because of its own greed and blind hatred. The contempt of the aristocrats has finally backfired as all knew it would. Creating ignorance and superficiality amongst the masses has finally gone too far, and there are no functional human beings left to survive. The contempt for nature and human ideals has led us to the brink of destruction, by our own hand.
Rating: Summary: A comment on another comment Review: On July 12, a reader from "somewhere" expressed distain for 1984, partly on the basis that Orwell's plot was lifted from Yevgeny Zamyatin's novel "We." Seems unlikely. 1984 was published in 1949, while the first printing of "We" was in Russian, in 1952! Orwell was the firstest with the mostest, in my opinion.
Rating: Summary: Rediculously boring and redundent Review: "1984" by George Orwell was extremely boring. The text was so long and unelaborate. I think that the text could have needed some more details and more drama. I have heard many good things about this book, but aparently I was dissapointed after reading this. I had expected the same great literary work as "Animal Farm" which I had loved and read many times in highschool. I was greatly dissapointed with the redundent and unecessary words. I would definitely not recommend this book to someone who likes drama and more elaborate text.
