Rating: Summary: Depressing, but Enlightening Review: The dismal, totalitarian way of life in Orwell's 1984 was very sad and seemed very discouraging when one comes to realize that much of what was foretold had already come to pass.Yet,we don't live in a Concentration Camplike society yet,and many of them have vanished.Like Orwell's other great book,Animal Farm,or even Wells' The Time Machine, this paints a picture of society as it might be if certain directions were taken. And like good satire should,it alerts us to make sure these directions aren't taken.
Rating: Summary: A well-rounded novel Review: George Orwell's nightmarish vision of 1984 proved not to be true, but an intellectual book all the same. The first half, however, was quite dull, and took too long to get to the point. But, if you have patience this book can be a real pleasure.
Rating: Summary: Really, Really Good Review: An extremely moving and powerful book which reduced me to tears
Rating: Summary: I hate one line summaries. Review: After reading some of the review I felt that people needed some information on this book. First George Orwell was a socialist. He fought on the side of the anarchists on the Spanish Civil War. His book is not about the dangers of communism but about the dangers of totalitarianism, the two are unrelated, not that anyone knows this. The book is also about more than this. It is about what is important in life, about humanity in general, and about war, to name a few. I think if people read it more carefully they would find it more worthwhile, but then who cares what I think.
Rating: Summary: I liked this book. Review: This was a good book. I just finished reading it for a tenth grade English class and it was good. It was kinda boring at first, but I liked it. I would recommend it to my friends.
Rating: Summary: One of the greatest books ever Review: I literally continuously read this book for about nine months. I would finish the book in only a few days, but I absolutely loved it. I just started over and kept reading it and re-reading it. This is one of those books where the plot got better every time and even knowing the ending did not dampen the suspense. I thought this book is one of the greatest of its class ever. Orwell is a true master.
Rating: Summary: It was a thrilling on the edge of your seat type of book Review: I read this book twice. Once as a assignment in class and the second because I found it so interesting and vibrant. This book is very interesting. It tells us his theory of what the future is or was to be like. I love it because it had a sense of character to it and was one of the best inside exquiste books I ever read.
Rating: Summary: I found this book as entertaining as any Review: I was not required to read 1984 for my English class. However, as an extra credit assignment I took the challenge of reading this novel. I read it in two days (a fast time for a reader like me)and I found it very enjoyable. Since, then I have read other books along the same subject, and still find this book to be a classic example of negative utopia.
Rating: Summary: Covers issues which are still concerning us. Review: People who think that 1984 is outdated, since Communism went down got it wrong. 1984 is not only about Communism. 1984 is about human nature and society. And the concerns it raises will never be outdated. Think of how you can be traced by credit card transactions, and how every information about your habits, income, interests, etc. is stored somewhere. Then think about the telescreens in 1984 again. Privacy has become an illusion. Also consider this: The information we receive, from newspapers, tv, radio, or the net can be manipulated easliy. How do you know something you saw on tv is real? You weren't there. How haven't seen it happen. You can only trust that the information you receive is true. And if a totalitarian regime takes over, it doesn't matter whether it's Communist, Fascist, or Fundamentalist. People will suffer regardless of ideology. Consider a Christian Fundamentalist government. -Mandatory Church attendance to be conditioned with the newest propaganda (2-minutes-hate) -Sex before marriage is unlawful (as in 1984) The list could be continued, but what's the point? Now that Communism is down there are new threats to freedom. And 1984 warns us about those.
Rating: Summary: 1984 is a classic that doesn't deserve to be. Review: While regarded as a "classic" by some literary scholars, 1984 is devoid of nearly every element of classical literature. The fall of Communism has erased nearly every trace of relevance this book may once have had. Its warnings of the evils of totalitarianism were overly alarmist by even Cold War standards and are even more so today. The absence of strong, 3-D characters makes even a man vs. society theme seem sorely lacking in depth . The only redeeming quality of this book may lie in providing future readers with an McCarthyist view of the evils of communism from the standpoint of a conservative 50s faux intellectual. If you're looking for a deeper, better-written, and tremendously more entertaining book, try Orwell's Animal Farm. Even walking, talking farm animals seem realistic compared to 1984.
