Summary: Shades of Gray, An Interesting read For all Ages
Review: Shades of Gray is a very interesting book. It touches your heart at the end of the book and makes you feel good. When I read it I compared myself to the people 150 years ago. I found many things similar and different between our lives. The book made me think about life. I also really liked the conflicts. I thought Shades of Gray was a great book!

Summary: Getting the Blues among the Grays
Review: Shades of Gray took place during the Civil War period and its aftermath. It is about a southern boy from Virginia who loses his whole family to the war and gets sent to his aunt and uncle's house in another part of the state. This book really gives you a feeling for the degree to which the two sides in the war despises each. There was absolutely no respect between them. It also gave you a feeling for how disgraced people who did not fight were. They really lost their social status. We would like to have known more about what happened to the boy's family before this book opens. As the story goes forward, the disrespect he feels for the uncle who refused to fight goes away when he realizes his uncle works very hard. This was a short, but very interesting book which we would recommend to anyone who wants to get into historical novels. -- Newton Boys Book Circle

Summary: Shades of Gray
Review: Shades of Gray, by Carolyn Reeder, is an exciting historical fiction book about the Reconstruction Era. The story takes place in a small town in Virginia, in the first years following the Civil War.

Will, a twelve year old shy city boy, just recently lost all of his family. His father and brother were killed by the Yankees, his sisters died of typhoid, and his mother of grief. He has to go live with his Uncle Jed in Virginia, who refused to fight for the Confederacy. Will considers him a traitor and refuses to call him Uncle Jed. When Will gets a letter from Doc. Martin, an old family friend, saying that Will can come and live with him now, he leaps at the chance.

Is Will going to leave to live with Doc. Martin? Or will he stay with Uncle Jed? How will he resolve his feelings about Uncle Jed? Find out in Shades of Gray.

The author is good at making suspense in this book, which makes it hard to put down. The author really paints a picture in your mind. She also uses very descriptive words. She brings you back to those days in her writing. I give this book four out of five stars. I would recommend this book for all ages. Reading this book will enhance your understanding of the Civil War.

Summary: A Lesson About Life
Review: Shades of Gray

Will doesn't respect anything after his family dies. He blames everybody , everything. He even has to move to his Aunt and Uncle's house where it gets more frustrating and hard. This book is called Shades of Gray by Carolyn Reeder, who won a Scott O'Dell award for historical fiction. The book wasn't that great because people like Will had too much feeling. They switched off and on with their emotions in the book . But it gave them all a lesson about life.
In the beginning of the book Will was mad at Uncle Jed because he did'nt fight in the war and thinks it's his fault. Close to the middle of the book, Will tries to be friends with three boys, but somehow they try to bully him. At the end, Will finally realizes that he should change his old attitude and tries to be nice to everyone around him.
In this book, Will should maybe not of have thought of just himself, but maybe somebody else's feeling .Don't just think of yourself but maybe think about other people's feeling's in a problem.

Summary: good book for boys or girls
Review: Shades of Grey is an excellent book. It is about a boy whose dad and his brothers go to fight in the war and end up getting killed. Also his sisters died because of malnutrition and his mom died of depression. So Will had to go live with his aunt. But he doesn't want to because his uncle refused to fight in the war. One element that I noticed a lot was flashback. Will kept remembering how his life was so different when he lived in Winchester.

Summary: Making a choice does not make you a traitor!
Review: The book was very good and it was worthwhile, but it was a little slow, and for those of you who are more into action, should read "Charley Skedaddle." Even though Shades of Gray was slow, I love action movies and I thought that this was still a good book.
